Jets G.M. John Idzik apparently not sold on DeSean Jackson

John Idzik AP

DeSean Jackson may appear to be a good fit for the Jets, but the one person who has the authority to sign Jackson seems unconvinced.

Jets owner Woody Johnson has publicly acknowledged the team’s interest, but according to ESPN.com, when the Jets had internal discussions about acquiring Jackson, Idzik wasn’t swayed.

Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator for five of Jackson’s six seasons in Philadelphia, and according to the report Mornhinweg is vouching for Jackson by saying he’d be a good fit both in the offense and in the locker room. But Mornhinweg doesn’t have any say on personnel matters, and Idzik doesn’t appear to be convinced that Jackson is someone the Jets should want.

Although the Jets have plenty of cap space, they’ve generally shied away from being big spenders this offseason. And now it looks like they won’t spend big to bring Jackson to New York.

Washington appears to be the early favorite to land Jackson, solely based on the fact that Washington is the one place we know Jackson will visit. How that visit plays out on Monday will determine whether other teams jump into the Jackson sweepstakes, but from all indications Idzik isn’t interested in making New York Jackson’s next stop.

Did he sit down with DJ and talk to him, or test or examine him in any way, or what did he do to come to this determination? Is this just a gut feeling?

  2. tnsteve says: Mar 30, 2014 2:45 PM

Jackson needs to be signed by a team in a small city so his “gang member” friends won’t be inclined to follow him. Signing him to a big city like NY would be disastrous.

  3. sixcess says: Mar 30, 2014 2:48 PM

While the Steelers are admiring their 6 shiny Lombardi trophies building an entire NFL team this offseason, the rest of the NFL is worrying about signing one player. This is why we won six super bowls and your team has not.

  4. urfinished says: Mar 30, 2014 2:50 PM

I don’t think anyone would blame Geno Smith for going all “gangsta” on John Idzik

  5. barsfordays says: Mar 30, 2014 2:55 PM

Lol of course. Why would the Jets be interested in a No.1 WR?

  6. hartdaddy says: Mar 30, 2014 2:55 PM

Why would he? You draft Brandin Cooks or Odell Beckham Jr who on film play similar to Jackson, but are eight years younger & 90 percent cheaper & come without the ego. It’s simple logic, draft your own guys let them grow within the organization.

  7. seatownballers says: Mar 30, 2014 2:58 PM

If the jets get Jackson, then Ebron in the draft they’ll have an offense worth talking about

  8. psubeerman21 says: Mar 30, 2014 3:04 PM

To the first poster, he doesn’t have to talk with him. Every GM knows what is going on with him – they talk to agents, players, etc. I’m sure they can call the NFL office and get a full play-by-play on Desean Jackson if they want. He doesn’t have to speak with him or “go with a gut feeling” to make an informed decision.

  9. grimreaper12 says: Mar 30, 2014 3:06 PM

not really. jets still don’t have a QB. haven’t had a decent one in about 30 years.
come on desean, do the right thing. take a pay cut and play with tom brady.

  10. coltzfan166 says: Mar 30, 2014 3:07 PM

If they land DeSean and get Mike Evans in the draft, man this offense would be one to watch out for.

  11. piratefreedom says: Mar 30, 2014 3:23 PM

use you cap space to extend your good guys before they become unaffordable, not to overpay for any other teams problem child.

  12. theworkhorsebackdotcom says: Mar 30, 2014 3:23 PM

Are you surprised that he is not sold on Desean? He’s not even sold on his HC.

  13. micknangold says: Mar 30, 2014 3:30 PM

Idzik wants to build through the draft. The only reason they gave Decker the deal they did was because it fit the market value for top-end #2 receivers (meaning better than a lot of teams number one’s – only a biased person would say Decker isn’t a top 25 WR) and WR is a desperate need for the Jets. If they can draft a player who develops into a legit #1, they’ll have him and Decker for less than the combined value of a single true number one on the open market for several years. I wouldn’t rule out the Jets packaging picks together and moving into a position to get Watkins or Evans.

They’ll draft two more pass catchers, go BPA with every other pick, and save their cap space to carry over and lock up Wilkerson, Richardson, and Coples. If Harrison keeps playing the way he did last year he’ll eventually need a new deal too, and you don’t let guys with his size/athleticism combo just walk away. That’s four key young defensive players. Idzik knows what he’s doing. You can “win” free agency by staying out of it.

Build through the draft and sign your own key players. That’s the safest way to have sustainable success in the NFL.

  14. seabreezes51 says: Mar 30, 2014 3:33 PM

Gonna take the desperate GM to sign him.

  15. maritime85 says: Mar 30, 2014 3:34 PM

Hope he goes to raiders then. Get him out of the nfc east

  16. 700levelvet says: Mar 30, 2014 3:34 PM

He probably realizes their is no reason to acquire a possibly high priced WR when they don’t really have anybody to throw him the damn ball.

  17. redskinfansince82 says: Mar 30, 2014 3:43 PM

If Skins pull this one off they would have the best group of Wideouts in the NFC east with Garcon, Hawkins, Moss, Reed and Jackson. Can you say good bye to 8 man fronts? Now you have plenty of options with RG3 and Alfred Morris in the backfield. That is a nightmare for opposing DC’s. Yes we are thin at CB and LB but this is a chance you have to take. Nobody will be mad if it doesn’t work. I have a feeling this will be a boondoggle for the Skins!

  18. jetsmmt says: Mar 30, 2014 3:46 PM

That’s strange because there’s another report which states Idzik had contacted Jackson’s agent yesterday.

  19. ttommytom says: Mar 30, 2014 3:46 PM

Actually the Red gang and the Blue gang are minor players in NY.

If DJ was a part of the Blue gang, then some of these smaller midwest cities would be a disaster, where said gangs have been making inroads.

His best bet to avoid all of this would be anything east of Ohio.

  20. catquick says: Mar 30, 2014 4:00 PM

Something bigger is going on with this guy. It doesn’t pass the smell test. Normally, this guy would have been signed in minutes. The NFL is a multi-BILLION $ business. They have as much security as wall street, maybe more. Every team also has it’s own security division. It seems no one really wants him all that bad. I’ve seen the guy play, he’s a phenom. That no one is beating in the door for him, especially the Jets and Chiefs, where he’s a very well known item, should tell you they have more info on him than we are hearing about. It makes NO SENSE for the Eagles to drop him suddenly when he’s the EXACT prototype player they need and want. Ocho and Terrell, Moss, et al showed us what teams are willing to out up with for talent. He’s way below their Pain in the back meter. Something big,( perhaps an indictment?) Is coming down the pike. It doesn’t make any sense any other way. Hernandez changed the game and it’s security features forever.

  21. lkimball2757 says: Mar 30, 2014 4:03 PM

    Interesting!!!
So Chip Kelly doesn’t want him, Andy Reid doesn’t want him and now Marty Morinwhig doesn’t want him. It seems that everyone who knows him is not interested. That leaves the desperate Washington Redskins as the only place to go. Same old story there.

  22. rtroy23 says: Mar 30, 2014 4:06 PM

I agree jets should pass on him.

  23. pftfan says: Mar 30, 2014 4:17 PM

The problem is too many people on here think running an NFL team is like playing GM Mode in Madden ’13.

Get DeSean Jackson! Get Maurice Jones-Drew! Get Chris Johnson!

There’s a reason why a good majority of NFL GM’s are staying away (or have stayed away) from these guys.

  24. sociald124 says: Mar 30, 2014 4:26 PM

I think all these GM’s are full of it.personally i think most are interested in Desean but whoever doesn’t end up signing him could simply say they weren’t interested in Desean because of all the baggage

As far as Washington getting 1st shot at him, to me it shows how bad Desean wants to stick it to Philly.

  25. latenightroach says: Mar 30, 2014 4:38 PM

After what Jeff Ireland did to Cleveland (trading Devone Bess to them without mentioning that the dude was a total flake), I can’t blame blame any team for being cautious about potential issues with DJ.

  26. thegreatgabbert says: Mar 30, 2014 4:45 PM

Idzik ended up in accounting after everyone used to say to him “Hey kid, you look like one of those old dead guy faces on the currency…..ha ha…”.

  27. jbeagles23 says: Mar 30, 2014 4:45 PM

Andy Reid and desean had a ton of success together and big red treated him great but yet has no interest? There is a big price of this story that is missing

  28. lennylyles says: Mar 30, 2014 4:49 PM

Steeler fan six championships in 81 years. Lots of franchises have a better year to championship ratio. You are also coming off two 500 seasons losing your last playoff game three years ago to Tim Tebow

  29. jdphx says: Mar 30, 2014 4:59 PM

    Maybe Idzik is the problem…

He certainly doesn’t realize going polar opposite from the guy signing your check, is probably not a good idea.

  30. fdugrad says: Mar 30, 2014 5:01 PM

If I were a GM, the fact that one team cut him loose when and how they did, and his former coach passed on him as well would probably make ME head in the other direction too. The above factors simply CAN’T be discounted.

  31. jetfan74 says: Mar 30, 2014 5:04 PM

I too say PASS. Idzik has done his job well so far. Weed out the bad contracts and problem children. Now building a TEAM is the main focus but yet all pundits want to harp on how he is slow playing FA and not signing the guys that all the fans want. I did not support the Vick signing and as long as he doesn’t start opening day I’m good w/ his moves so far. Rex is now required to do his job and earn his pay. Coach up the young guys and build this monster for long term success. Please remember that our entire D line has to be resigned in the near future. The sky is not falling, it’s actually crystal clear and the forecast looks beautiful!!!!!

  32. channer81 says: Mar 30, 2014 5:39 PM

Idzik is only sold on getting a new coach and making or not making any moves that will get him to that point faster. GM’s want THEIR guy at head coach, not inherit someone.

  33. henryjones20 says: Mar 30, 2014 5:42 PM

Its about time these idiots start getting blackballed out of the league.I live on the east coast but it would be great to see him in a Edmonton Eskimo uniform.

  34. polkhigh4life says: Mar 30, 2014 6:02 PM

Chiefs don’t have the space for him
And the Jets have so many other holes to fill. An against offensive line, no secondary whatsoever, and no RB… Do not say Powell and Ivory Jet fans…that’s not enough…..and to the guy who thinks the Jets paid Vick 4 million to watch an inferior QB play while he holds the clipboard is crazy… After he gets hurt GENO will take the reins…but Vick will be the Week 1 starter….unless the Jets move him for Aaron Rodgers….

  35. gabe77 says: Mar 30, 2014 6:15 PM

Isn’t the very fact that Idzik doesn’t think DJax would help them make it EXACTLY what they should do?

  36. rcali says: Mar 30, 2014 6:23 PM

Is it because he doesn’t have any felonies? Or is it because he doesn’t have his own reality tv show with his wife?

  37. nomoreseasontix says: Mar 30, 2014 6:26 PM

Jackson’s only chance is to hustle some money out of star-struck Snyder.
Everyone else is looking into it and backing away.
    Smart.

  38. dlr4skins says: Mar 30, 2014 6:27 PM

Fine by me. Cheaper for the ‘Skins. By the way, what crime is Jackson guilty of?

  39. 25cuts says: Mar 30, 2014 6:27 PM

It’s hilarious how skins who were 3-13 think getting Djax is their savior. Do they not realize rg knee is broke? Or their D being horrible? Lol. Wow. Good luck you can have him. And you’ll still be looking up at the eagles in the standings!

  40. bricktop02 says: Mar 30, 2014 6:49 PM

Yes here is what your missing no cap space according to Ian Rapoport

#Chiefs & Andy Reid were intrigued by DeSean Jackson, but with limited cap space, can’t match the budding open market. Would’ve loved DeSean

You’re reaching for something that simply is not there. The LAPD has completely cleared DJax of any involvement in anything illegal. Plus both of those “situations” are over 2 years old!!!Haha They gave him his contract extension with full knowledge of the same “situations” that are somehow a deal breaker all of a sudden! The Eagles would have been better off just saying that DJax was insubbordinate, tardy to mandatory meetings and not “buying in” to new culture that Kelly is trying to instill. But the Eagles know that the fanbase would’ve went Crazy. How can they justify raising ticket prices yada yada yada while providing an inferior product? Its called subterfuge! His Agent had received 7 calls from different teams all within 30 minutes of the announcement of his release!!! That means that there is definitely interest by numerous teams to obtain his services, just because he didn’t pull a REVIS and sign within 24 hours means nothing. There have been reports that atleast 1 team is “desperate” to get DJax to sign with them. He’s apparently fielding his options and his agent is figuring out which will be the best fit for him both profesionally and personally. The Jets that you mentioned just over paid in my opinion for Decker. Decker got a 7.5 million dollar signing bonus, how much do you think a team will have to give DJax?LOL They are a defense first team and probably can’t justify putting that much of their total cap into 2 WR’s. This is about timing, if he had been released at the beginning of free agency he’d probably be a Jet considering his former OC is with the Jets. Then you mention the Chiefs. While Reid is there and would certainly attest for the immense talent DJax possess’, he doesn’t write the checks. Plus, incase you forgot they had a situation with Jevon Belcher(murder/Suicide) and just may not want to bring in anyone remotely controversial. It would certainly be a much needed performance upgrade for the Chiefs but not so much for DJax. Although A.Smith has been playing better, he’s still a glorified game manager and will not maximize DJax potential. You mentioned T.O. right?LOL He put the Eagles on his back and carried them to the SuperBowl, WHILE INJURED. Do you know how they rewarded him for that? Cris Carter had a drug/alcohol issue. Do you know how they “helped” Carter with that? It may be a tough pill to swallow for you but thats just the type of organization the Eagles are. IT IS WHAT IT IS.

  53. bobk3333 says: Apr 1, 2014 2:04 PM

DJ’s best year was last year with Chip Kelley, perhaps the perfect coach for his talents, and he still only had 82 catches. DJ can only cradle-catch the ball, with his thumbs pointing out. He never goes up to high point a contested pass. Defenses will compensate and take away his deep threat.
