Report: Dolphins would like to add another running back in draft

The Dolphins have added Knowshon Moreno to their backfield and coach Joe Philbin said last week that they’re looking for more development from Lamar Miller heading into his third NFL season, but those may not be the only two options on the ground come next season.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins personnel department would like to add another back to the mix during the draft. Salguero pegs the middle rounds as the likeliest time for the team to go after that player.

With Moreno and Miller already on board, the team is reportedly looking for a runner who can help run down the clock when the Dolphins take a lead into the final minutes of the game. There’s a particular mention of an ability to break tackles, something that the Dolphins have included among the developments that they’d like to see from Miller this offseason.

If the Dolphins do find such a back, it wouldn’t bode well for Daniel Thomas‘ future with the team. The 2011 second-round pick has underwhelmed during his three years with the team and the job description for a rookie addition sounds a lot like what the Dolphins haven’t been getting from his spot on the roster.

Dolphins and Patriots will be duking it out for Jeremy Hill on draft day.

IF that type of back is available then it would make total sense, but they have to fill holes in the Oline before they draft any other position.

    That’s funny…….you’d think they’d wanna hire a HC first.

Or you could trade Dion Jordan for Bryce Brown and one of the 10 average pass rushers we have…

As soon as they dump Thomas Belichick will be there to scoop him up for pennies

  6. dolphincritic says: Apr 1, 2014 10:37 AM

Cut Thomas and sign those free agent linemen.

get a big back, pair him with moreno and miller, and finally a good o line, with lazor’s offense and the pass catchers they have in hartline, wallace, gibson, mathews and clay, should be fun to watch.

got to give it up to hickey, he is doing a great job in filling needs with good solid players and not just going after the flashy signing. people made fun of the dolphins for missing out on the other gm’s, but it looks like hickey is doing a great job and seem’s to be a great fit for this team. got to prove it on the field, but it looks like this team is being built the right way now and look’s good for the future. i cant wait for the draft.

They need to add a QB…Tannehill is one of the worst starting QBs in the league.

  9. Patskrieg dot com says: Apr 1, 2014 10:59 AM

I mean, they knocked it out of the park drafting Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas. There’s no way this could go poorly.

Is Larry Csonka available…he’s been chasing bears and caribou around Alaska for a bit has gotta be able to lace them up after doing that.

I am curious to see how Moreno plays outside of a Manning-led offense. I think he could end up doing pretty well if he runs as hard as he did last year.

Trey Mason. That’s who Miami should take in the middle rounds. Tough runner who almost beat my Noles single handily in the National championship game.

Daniel Thomas is just a guy with concussion problems. Lamar Miller has talent, but has terrible vision for a running back. This is a position Miami needs to completely re-do

Philbin better do something at RB, Moreno will not do squat!!! I hope I’m wrong but last year in Denver was the best he’s been since the Broncs drafted him!!! Do or Die for Philbin this year he better figure out how to beat our division foes too!!!

  14. rukkus1 says: Apr 1, 2014 11:34 AM

Maybe should look for a new coach.

  15. chapmanb2014 says: Apr 1, 2014 11:45 AM

Hmm Miami drafted a RB last year that Philbin never let hit the field. What about Mike Gillespie?

  16. mortyglickstein says: Apr 1, 2014 11:53 AM

Don’t they need a lead first?

  17. iman62 says: Apr 1, 2014 12:08 PM

Might as well take another shot in the draft. Daniel Thomas just doesn’t get it done.

I am happy with hickey, kind of fell into him just like Philbin.

where is Lousaka Polite when you need him?
The truth is he picked up 36 out 38 short yardage first downs when they cut him in went downhill ever since.

No RB is going to help you stop Buffalo from racking up double digit sacks on you!

  20. guvsta says: Apr 1, 2014 12:41 PM

Daniel Thomas averaged 100 yards/game for his first 2 games in a Dolphins uniform and looked very impressive. Then he was injured and, when he returned, looked a different player for the next 2 1/2 years. Time to move on.

I have no problem taking a RB in the draft. Lets amp up the competition at that spot. This will make training camp even better. Moreno, Miller, Thomas, Gillisie, and whoever we draft battle it out. Make the best man win.

    Lache Seastrunk

  24. iamkillerfin says: Apr 1, 2014 2:13 PM

Big tall WR is needed @19 then o line, LB, DB, then RB

  25. jboogie82 says: Apr 1, 2014 3:10 PM

When I look at our RBs, I ask myself what the hell was Ireland thinking? Drafted Daniel Thomas (unproven), Lamar Miller (Small back), Gellislie (another small developmental back) and now we add Moreno.

That position needs a MAJOR overhaul. I’d keep Miller because of his breakway speed but that’s about it. Dump the rest if those guys and start and dumpster fire. Good lord!

  26. mmeyer3387 says: Apr 1, 2014 3:52 PM

They just need a decent offensive line for a running back or quarter back. What kind of player can have a decent season playing behind such terrible line?

l need a better offensive line. No running back or quarter back can play well.

  27. djscottyb says: Apr 1, 2014 4:14 PM

    Moreno (starter)
    Miller (backup/change of pace)
    Thigpen (3rd down guy)

Unless you can find a bruiser back in the draft, keep these 3 and line up TE Sims as a fullback. Be inventive, use bodies to your advantage.

Gillislee is a nice guy, but showed little promise last year.
Philbin worked Thigpeb into the rotation as a RB or WR
In a few of the last games.

If the Phins want to draft a skill position after OL and ILB I’d rather
see a CB drafted than a WR or RB

Let’s recap last season’s off season – top FA Wallace on the trading block – big bold draft move Jordan on the trading block – both LBs we go were unresponsive while Dansby made the pro bowl – 2 cornerbacks drafted, no playing time, 2 more FA signed – released Reggie Bush who had a banner year for Miller (didn’t stand a chance behind that line) and never ran Thomas, Gillesly no playing time, signed FA Moreno and looking in the draft for more. other 2 notables were Gibson and Keller on IR. the only area we needed obvious help we didn’t help at all and actually went the other way in the o-line. Total result of last years draft and FA season… less than ZERO! what makes anyone think this year will be any different? I will always bleed aqua and orange, but I’ve definitely downgraded from Fanatic to “wait n’ see’er”.

I like Mcjon22’s suggestion of Tre Mason, but based on this article it sounds like they are looking for someone more like my Buckeye’s Carlos Hyde. Unfortunately however, Carlos with probably already be gone in those middle rounds. I’ve heard him projected as high as late first round, but more likely somewhere in the second. I agree with everyone else that O-line is priority 1, 2, and 3, but if we are fairly happy with our FA O-line pickups and Carlos is available at 50; take him. He, Moreno, and Miller would be a great and stable of backs. We can pick-up “excellent” interior lineman in rounds 3-5.
