Trump emerges as potential investor for Bills

The man who once helped sue the NFL could be joining the ranks of the league’s owners.

Or maybe he just wants a little publicity, and he’s a week too late for the whole “hogs get slaughtered” routine.

Regardless, billionaire Donald Trump told WBEN radio in Buffalo that he has been approached about buying the Bills.

“People have actually talked to me about the Bills,” Trump said, via ESPN.com. “I mean, the group of people called me — would I be interested in investing and I’ll take a look at it. I mean, I look at a lot of things. I’ll take a look at it.”

It’s unclear whether Trump would be the lead dog or merely a minority owner. In the 1980s, Trump owned the USFL’s New Jersey Generals. At Trump’s urging, the upstart league (which pilfered more than a few big-name players) moved from the spring to the fall, taking on the NFL directly — and quickly failing. An antitrust lawsuit against the NFL resulted in a $1 verdict, which by law was trebled to $3.

But decades have passed since that unfortunate legal entanglement, and nothing rebuilds bridges like cold hard cash. It also will help Trump’s cause if the group in which he could be involved commits to keeping the team in Buffalo.  Trump seems to be willing to make that commitment.

“I know so many people in Buffalo and they have asked me about look at that and I certainly would look at it but I would … if it were me I’d keep the team in Buffalo,” Trump said. “I think it’s something that is really vital to the area. … It would be catastrophic, in my opinion, if Buffalo lost the Buffalo Bills.”

Either way, the ultimate reality show could soon be joining forces with a man whose reality show spawned the catch phrase that plenty of Bills coaches have heard in recent years.

  1. An antitrust lawsuit against the NFL resulted in a $1 verdict, which by law was trebled to $3..
Is that some sort of April 1st joke or the actual truth ?

  2. He’s a loathsome blowhard – but if Trump keeps the Bills in Buffalo then God bless him.

  3. Awww He!!, why not. Not a Bills fan, but would hate to see them lose their team.

Then again, maybe this is just a sad April Fools joke!

  4. Wow, that would be really embarrassing to be a Bills fan then. hopefully the NFL is not that dumb to let someone like him to be an owner.

  5. I would hope that the rest of the owners’ would vote “no” to his being a controlling owner.

  6. Trump is a masterful manipulator of the media and a shameless self promoter. Just like he is going to run for Governor, President, etc. there is no truth to what this man says. And, hair. I just had to get that out of the way.

  7. There is less than zero chance the NFL would allow Trump to buy a team. It’s bad enough he’s the kind of polarizing figure they’d never touch (similar to why Rush Limbaugh would have never have had that chance to buy the Rams), but the NFL is still undoubtedly pissed off about Trump acting like he did with the USFL.

Trump’s just being a blowhard, per usual, but there is zero credibility to this story.

  8. How people would call someone a buffoon that actually makes money and is successful is beyond me. At least Trump actually does things and makes things happen. BTW, he is the only one in the country building and investing in golf courses at the present time.

  9. Too far fetched… And he would not get approval from the other 31 owners. I am not the April Fool!!

  10. NFL coaches will wake up in a cold sweat at night, envisioning the Donald, with orange hair and a pink tie, jabbing his index finger at them and snarling “You’re Hired!”.

  11. “I think it’s something that is really vital to the area. … It would be catastrophic, in my opinion, if Buffalo lost the Buffalo Bills.”

Although commendable, that is not enough. The Bills need competent ownership. Not someone with a reputation of bankruptcies and walking away. Bills fans deserve better than the comb over.

  12. Sure he will take a look at any business person would if you have the money to invest in the NFL as it is a money maker. I am sure the Bills turn a profit but the Bills are in such a market that the Salary Cap actually hurts them. The salary cap is the average of all the teams revenue and the Bills are one of the lowest if not the lowest team in revenue. In order to stay in compliance with the cap they have to spend a larger portion of their revenue. Other owners won’t encourage the Bills to stay in Buffalo as they would profit more partnering with someone in a bigger market. I hope the Bills stay but the deck is stacked against them. They haven’t had a winner in a long time, their national appeal isn’t what it once was and they simply don’t have the corporate partners to make the money other franchises do. As a small market team you can’t have all those strikes against you and expect to keep your team. Hope someone comes in and saves the day.

  13. I think it would be funny. Could you see him trying to pull his “bully act” on some of these owners? They would make him sit in the corner at every meeting.

  14. So Trump will borrow money to buy the team, run it into bankruptcy after pulling out many millions for himself, and leave the investors and team even worse off than it is now.

    Yeah, great plan.

  15. “Bills fans are still mourning the loss of their team’s owner. No need to add insult to injury.”

Why would anyone actually care that an old billionaire died? Did he ever do anything for you? I mean besides charge lots of money to watch a mediocre football team.

  16. Trump??? Ha!!! That’s BY FAR the funniest thing I’ve ever read on this site. I hope for the people of Buffalo that this isn’t true & just plain comedic b/c Trump is perhaps the worst possible thing that could happen to the Buffalo area & its fans.

  17. Goodell is already ruining the NFL so why not add one more idiot to the pile!!! Even tho I’m a Fins fan but the Bills need to stay in Buffalo!!!

  18. Wow. And we thought that Jones and Snyder were the worst owners. They’ll look positively genius compared to this moron.

This would end the Bills as a viable franchise … forever.

  19. Bit of a contrast in ownership style between the low key decency of Ralph Wilson to the biggest self promoter in The Donald. It would probably mean that the team exits from Buffalo.
However, if he’s prepared to spend the money, Goodell probably wouldn’t object. Trump is a very smart businessman and an NFL team is a great business.

  20. Trump is the man!
Bold, honest and gritty. He gets to the point and he gets things done.
A lot of you whiners on here are all trying to play comedian with your snarky attempts at humor, but you should admit — like him or not — he gets things done!
You don’t think if Trump were the owner of the Bills that they wouldn’t have the best free agents in the NFL? He would invest a lot of money in the franchise.
    Great move if it happens!

  21. Trump doesn’t have enough actual money (he has money, but he also has debt and bankruptcy in his past). The owners would never approve him, but you really think that Trump would keep them in Buffalo? He’d move them to LA in a heartbeat and he’d beg HBO to pick them up for Hard Knocks every year so he can make a reality show out of the camp cuts.

  22. I cant stand this egotistical jerk. It would only hurt the nfl and the bills franchise if he was an owner. Even as a silent partner he would still be a terrible addition on account of general principal alone. The last thing we need are more loudmouth owners. Yes, Im referring to you Irsay and Jerry….

  23. Wonder how much Bobby Kraft will pay him to NOT buy the Bills. The Donald would definately call out Bobby’s preferential treatment that he gets from Goodell and NFL.

  24. Trump turned $200 million he got from his father’s estate (he had already borrowed millions of dollars from other family members using the inheritance as collateral before his daddy’s death) into -$900 million and duped investors out of hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of his “brilliant” business career. If you buy any part of his shtick, I feel sorry for you.

  25. Not a huge fan of the Donald however, he won me over because he’s one of the few businessmen/politicians who wanted to rebuild the World Trade Center Towers as Teddy Roosevelt would’ve….he might bring success to the Bills.

  26. It would be great because he would secure the team in Buffalo and shake things up in the league a little and keep other owners on their toes. You want an aggressive and competitive Owner.

  27. Trump doesn’t have enough money to own a pro football team. He just lends him name to things. He is the king of OPM. Other People’s Money. Doesn’t actually invest his own assets.

Now, he may brand the Trump name on the team and stadium, but he would leave the heft of actual investment to people with real money. (Like Magic and the Dodgers)

But he is also the king of not losing his money. As many bankruptcies as Trump subsidiaries have filed, he has held onto his assets….

  28. Guy is a narcissist but it seems that whatever he is in he takes success or failure personally which might not be a bad attribute for an owner to have

  29. All those Bills fans will finally get to see their “REAL NEW YORK TEAM” when Trump moves them to the actual New York Tri-State Area.

Say hello to the Hartford Bills!

  30. Trump isn’t a contender to buy the Bills. He doesn’t have nearly enough money. He isn’t a billionaire. He isn’t worth hundreds of millions of dollars either.

Trump’s father, Fred Trump, left each of his children more than $100 million. Donald Trump hasn’t grown that net worth. He is simply a self promoter.

Trump isn’t involved in big business deals as an owner. He doesn’t own much of anything.

Yes, Trump lives a luxurious lifestyle. Inhering more than $100 million will do that. But back in the 1990s Trump was so incompetent at handling his financial affairs that he had to beg his sister (a judge) and his brother for a loan.

Trump doesn’t own any of the buildings with his name on them in New York. He is simply a building manager/promoter without equity.

Lest anyone think Trump is worth as much as Jerry Jones or Arthur Blank or any other NFL team owner, none of them have sons that work showing apartments in the building they manage. Yes, Donald, Jr. shows ordinary apartments in a Trump branded property, and Jr. is not a young kid, he works closely with his father.

The only reason this is newsworthy is because Trump’s show is on NBC and this site is hosted by NBC.

Other than Mark Cuban, there is no other pro sports team owner, and no other person worth enough to buy a sports team, who bothers with hosting a TV show. And the difference between Cuban and Trump is that Cuban does it out of ego and for kicks, whereas Trump seriously negotiates for his pay for the show because he needs the income.

It’s a sad commentary on how uninformed most TV viewers of Trump’s show are that they think he is a successful businessman instead of a clown who inherited more than $100 million and has burned money.

  31. FYI, Trump paid about $9 million for the New Jersey Generals 30 years ago. That is about $23 million in 2014. Even the lowest priced NFL franchises today get sold for more than 25x that price.

Trump is just a self-promoter trying to get attention to promote the buildings he manages. He couldn’t even dream of owning an NFL team.

  32. He’d make the Bills the first NFL team to file for bankruptcy. The guy is a con and an empty suit.

It takes real talent to drive casinos, where the house always wins, into bankruptcy.

  33. The first time Trump filed for bankruptcy he had personal debt of $900 million after calculating personal assets. He learned to use investors (whom he later left holding the bag) funds the next time he ran his organizations into bankruptcy. It’s all a matter of public record. He’s a con man.

  34. But the Bills for a Billion, move them into a state of the art stadium in L.A, sell them for 2 billion.

Sounds like something a real estate mogul would certainly look into.

  35. gosh a lot of true colors shine through here. so some here think Trump would lead the bills to bankruptcy. yeah….that makes a lot of sense, a man who has built an empire, and is amazing with his money…he isn’t qualified, right?

I’d much rather have a guy like this, than some dude like Jay Z who parties with his players.

the day the NFL is owned by a bunch of Jay’Z types is when I stop watching. Trump would make a great partial owner.

  36. If you are going to sell to Trump, get cash up front, and get enough to hire lots and lots of very good lawyers.

  37. Trump refuses to run for political office (other than fact he would never win and he always wants his name in the news) bc he won’t file financial disclosure records. Do you think he would file financial disclosures with the NFL owners? This guy is PT Barnum and is showing his lack of class and decorum commenting on this team and Jim Kelly less than a week after Mr. Wilson died.

  38. Crappy weather 7 months out of the year, Wide Right, 15 years without the playoffs, home run throwback, the Sabres as the only other pro team, No Quarterback for the last 2 decades, the death of Ralph Wilson, 4 straight Superbowl losses, losing most of our elite home grown players to free agency, ect….All of it I could deal with and march on as a Buffalo sports fan…..

But now DONALD TRUMP as a possible owner?

Either this is an April Fools prank or God really does hate Buffalo

  39. As a fan I’m all for it! We have blue collar people here who support a poor product year after year. These people deserve an NFL team.

  40. An antitrust lawsuit against the NFL resulted in a $1 verdict, which by law was trebled to $3..

Is that some sort of April 1st joke or the actual truth ?

    You must be young. TRUE.

Jerry Jones and Donald Trump? That’s almost like Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey … only better.

  41. my knee jerk reaction was ‘nooooo’ but then i thought about it, it could be exactly what the team needs; an owner willing to throw money around, and wants a high quality, high profile product. after “frugal ralph” (rip) can you imagine a bills team that wants to spend to the cap and wheels and deals like its real life fantasy football? bills fan would go crazy, in a good way. trump would be al david, mark cuban and jerry jones all in one…..come upstate don and bring the checkbook! say it with me….

“no one circles the wagons like donald trump and the buffalo bills!”

  42. Trump has nowhere near the billion needed to buy an NFL team it’s all smoke and mirrors with him. Please let’s get the facts straight and not refer to him as “billionaire Donald Trump”. “Reality TV persona Donald Trump” would be more accurate.

  43. Trump can’t run a business to save his life. His business model is to suck all of the money (for personal use) out of a company and then declare bankruptcy.
Trump, as an NFL owner, would kill the NFL.

  44. As a lifelong Browns fan I really know what it feels like to have a team you, your dad and his dad all grew up watching and cheering on ripped away from you. For me the anger and the hurt was unforgettable, thankfully we got are team back in 1999. No city deserves to go through that kind of hurt. I hope either through Trump or some other way that the Bills stay in Buffalo where they belong.

Move the Bills. So many other cities in America more deserving of a pro team. #GoodbyeBuffalo

I’d like to move you off PFT. So many other trolls more deserving of trolling. #GoodbyeLogicalvoicesays

  46. Going from one of the classiest owners in NFL history to this gas bag (along with the team recent on field performance) would be too much for Bill fans to bear! Please say ain’t so!!!

  47. I know this sounds cold but why would someone invest nearly a Billion dollars on an asset and then not try and maximize it’s value? There are nearly a dozen better cities to move this franchise to.

  48. SOme of you are really stupid. Read the article headline….It doesnt say “buy” it says “invest”. He would pool together resources, like Golisono and Pegula to formulate a team, who would then purchase the team collectively. Not complicated people
