Sammy Watkins: I have some freakish talents

It’s not hard to find people calling Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins as the top wide receiver in this year’s draft class and Watkins isn’t going to argue with them.

Watkins said he has “some freakish talents and ability to make plays” during an interview with 95.7 The Game on Tuesday, which explains why he’s expected to be off the board sometime in the first few picks once the draft gets underway in May. Watkins also explained why he thinks he’ll be able to avoid some of the difficulties experienced by other rookie wideouts when they enter the NFL.

“I’m able to transition myself and work through tough conditions,” Watkins said, via Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com. “I understand football and the preparation, so for me, it’s getting in with the team I’m with and learn that playbook. That’s all I need to do is really learn that playbook, and after that, just adjusting to the speed of the game and how cornerbacks play in the NFL. That would be the next step. I think after the first few games I’ll be definitely fine.”

Gutierrez thinks Watkins would fit well with the Raiders, who were believed to have interest in DeSean Jackson before Jackson agreed to a deal with the Redskins. Oakland won’t be the only team interested in a man with “freakish talents,” however, and that may leave Watkins unavailable when the Raiders’ fifth overall pick comes up.

I’m sure the late great Rick James would have something to say about this.

He already said he will be going to Tampa, at 7 or before expect him to be in Pewter.

Best to come out since AJ Green and Julio Jones.

    Welcome to Cleveland Sammy!

    Go Browns!!!

If Rams pass on him they’ll regret it for years to come. I get signing Britt with most his pay coming from incentives but for them to pass on Watkins because of Britt it’ll bite em in the butt. I get they’ve drafted a lot of receivers in the last two years but quick and givens haven’t produced cut your ties with quick and pick up watkins

With the 4th pick in the draft, the Cleveland Browns select…

The problem lots of times with these kids is that they are SUPER FREAKY talents,,,but because of the DRAFT order they get picked by disfunctional teams with no leadership or structure,,,eg,,,raiders,,browns jets,,etc etc etc..and they get ruined…completely. Can you imagine somebody like WATKINS with BRADY throwing to him? CAN YOU?

  11. lks311 says: Apr 2, 2014 9:23 AM

What a shame if he goes to Cleveland. It will be a waste of “some freakish talents”.

To paraphrase Giselle, he can’t throw it to himself.

Watkins tweeted a pic of himself wearing a Raider uniform last night

  13. solnosky says: Apr 2, 2014 9:27 AM

Worst case scenario for Browns is if both Watkins and Mack are gone at #4.

If so, they need to find a trade partner to move down a few spots and good luck with that. Might see them reach for Mike Evans at #4.

  14. jimmyt says: Apr 2, 2014 9:28 AM

patriottony, what are you going on about? Brady is the most over rated QB in NFL history.

  15. wallydippins says: Apr 2, 2014 9:28 AM

I pray this guy is still there at #4 so he can team up with Josh Gordon. Wow! That is a scary thought!

  16. pftisfulloftrolls says: Apr 2, 2014 9:34 AM

Out of all of the guys projected to go in the Top 5 Watkins is the one that looks the most like the sure thing. However the Texans would be throwing quite the curveball to take him at 1 with Andre and DeAndre on the team already.

  17. ytownjoe says: Apr 2, 2014 9:35 AM

If he gets past the Rams, he will go to the Browns at #4.

Brady the most overrated qb ever?!?!? Are u crazy, he’s the best qb ever. And he does have freakish talent, let’s just hope he doesn’t go to a team that his qb will never bring out that talent. (Raiders, rams, etc.)

  20. 80sbroncofan says: Apr 2, 2014 10:02 AM

I think if Rams pass on him at 2 they will be making a huge mistake. Sam Bradford has been throwing to mediocre wide receivers since he has been a rookie. They need to get him some elite talent.

  21. marcuswelby1 says: Apr 2, 2014 10:18 AM

Hey jimmyt, you forgot to add: “and a first ballot Hall of Fame selection”.

  22. qdog112 says: Apr 2, 2014 10:28 AM

I have it on good authority that Watkins knows somebody in prison, someone who’s sister told him they dated a guy in a gang and he himself, was twice pulled over by cops, while driving after dark.

He must be fully vetted before some team takes a high risk flier at him. Plus, he still wears braids. That is an invisible TERRORIST FIST BUMP.

  23. realfootballfan says: Apr 2, 2014 10:31 AM

Guy’s going to be a stud.

  24. thelastwordyaheard says: Apr 2, 2014 10:34 AM

Not as freakish as Clowney.. you know, the dude from that team that’s beaten Clemson 5yrs in a row..

  25. fwippel says: Apr 2, 2014 10:37 AM

….and a swelled head to match.

Seriously, Watkins has great talent and potential, but D’Andre Hopkins was a better prospect coming out of Clemson.

  26. johnnycash19 says: Apr 2, 2014 10:48 AM

    This guy is a tease.

I’ve seen him post pics of him in a Bucs uniform and a Lions uniform and talk about how great it would be to play next to Megatron.

Now I’m hearing this Oakland uniform talk?

    What a tease!

He is a beast though. I’d be happy as hell if my team drafted him.

That’s kind of exactly the point. What makes the NFL fun is the turnover– watching as bad teams become good, and good teams start to fall behind. Four years ago, San Fran was one of the worst teams in the league. Two years ago, the Texans appeared poised to become an AFC powerhouse. 18 years ago, the Baltimore Ravens were the Cleveland Browns. Teams rise and fall and that’s why we love the NFL. If the Steelers, Packers, and Cowboys had dominated the NFL for the last 40 years, no one would even care about the league– that’s what frustrates so many people about the NBA. I know that I’m stoked for the 2023 Rams-Browns Super Bowl, as should all real football fans.

and the draft is still 5 weeks away instead of 2 1/2 thanks again Goodell.

this Watkins guy could be a suprise pick by the Vikings if available. Cordarrelle & Sammy could be scary!

I already tore into this above, but can you give an example? The long-pathetic Lions have done pretty darn good with CJ and Stafford– they don’t seem especially ruined, nor do Eric Berry and Mario Williams. Alex Mack and Joes Thomas/Haden are having very solid careers in Cleveland. Trent Richardson just isn’t talented, much like Mark Sanchez, Aaron Curry, and Jason Smith. Darren McFadden would be injury prone no matter where he played; and there’s no power on Earth that could have saved JaMarcus Russell’s career. The one argument you could make is Sam Bradford and the Rams, though he still has plenty of time to live up to his potential– and going back a little, maybe Joey Harrington and David Carr. Really, it’s bad draft choices that keep crummy organizations down in the dirt year after year, not “ruining” good players.

He is going to be a very very good NFL player. Freakish may apply here.

  34. steelerben says: Apr 2, 2014 2:01 PM

Anyone that passes on this kid is going to eventually regret it. He’s going to put up Moss when he felt like it kinds of numbers.

  35. babygaga19 says: Apr 2, 2014 2:15 PM

Your season is over before the draft gets here. You can thank Reg for ruining it.

  36. raiderapologist says: Apr 2, 2014 4:25 PM

The Raiders need so much help it won’t matter if Watkins is still there when they pick.

  37. badmoonrison says: Apr 6, 2014 3:33 PM

I was kinda hoping we would sign this guy but after reading his quotes it sounds like theres a lack of humility there, especially for a rookie. He wont beat NFL level DBs right out of the gate. Did guys who are now superstars for example CALVIN J put out quotes like this a few years ago?
