Ravens add Owen Daniels

Two-time Pro Bowl tight end Owen Daniels will try to reinvigorate his career in Baltimore.

Daniels agreed to terms with the Ravens today, Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL Network first reported and the Ravens have announced.

In Baltimore, Daniels will reunite with Gary Kubiak, the new Ravens offensive coordinator who was Daniels’s head coach in Houston. Kubiak likes using two tight ends, and Daniels will pair with Dennis Pitta in the Ravens’ offense.

The 31-year-old Daniels suffered a broken fibula and was limited to just five games last season. But at his best he’s been one of the best tight ends in the NFL, and in 2012, when he was healthy enough to play 15 games, he caught 62 passes for 716 yards and six touchdowns.

    Nice free agency pick up!!!

  2. youtubeingravenvids says: Apr 3, 2014 5:51 PM

Yes!! FINALLY!! What a great duo!! He may have not always been healthy in Houston, but now he doesn’t have to take on the workload of a number 1 TE anymore, so we should be good!!

  3. unclerayray52 says: Apr 3, 2014 5:52 PM

Good move if he can stay healthy. And that’s a big if.

  4. jagsdynasty says: Apr 3, 2014 5:53 PM

Please, everyone knows that the Jaguars are the best and will be the best for next 20 years.

  5. pooflingingmonkey says: Apr 3, 2014 5:54 PM

Smart move by the Ravens… as usual.

  6. jakec4 says: Apr 3, 2014 5:54 PM

He was pretty awesome before the injuries. I don’t expect the Owen Daniels from a few years ago, but he’s definitely an upgrade over Ed Dickson.

  7. joeflaccoallday says: Apr 3, 2014 5:54 PM

Ehh wish they drafted Ebron but that means they’ll go defense or trade back. Smh

  8. watermelon1 says: Apr 3, 2014 5:57 PM

So the ravens picked up receivers so they could run 2 TE sets?

This is just further proof that insisting the issue was anything BUT flacco is going to waste all the talent they do have.

At least the running game should pick up. Too bad that rarely wins you games these days with these rules.

  9. bmoreballbuster says: Apr 3, 2014 5:57 PM

    Best franchise in the league

  12. bigdeuceuno says: Apr 3, 2014 6:00 PM

Let’s go Ravens I like the idea of running a two TE offence he has way better hands than Dickson so it can’t hurt let’s just hope he doesn’t get hurt!

The Packers were desperate to sign Daniels but he obviously wasn’t interested. I remember some of their fans being excited about Daniels/Quarless being the next Gronkowski/Hernandez. No delusions there.

  14. jacobk621 says: Apr 3, 2014 6:05 PM

I think Daniels could have better year than pitta if joe decides he won’t play favorite for his best buddy pitta

  15. stuckthefeelers says: Apr 3, 2014 6:07 PM

Surprised we got him for just one year. Stoolers probably offered him 7

  16. diegosteel says: Apr 3, 2014 6:07 PM

Wow, Raven keep getting older and older!!!

  17. ncphinsfan says: Apr 3, 2014 6:13 PM

If this was a few years ago it would be a great signing. He is older and has had very serious season ending injuries 3 of the past 5 years. For a 1 year “show me -stay healthy” it isn’t a bad move because Ebron will be off the board long before the Ravens pick.

  18. ravenswhat says: Apr 3, 2014 6:15 PM

Ozzie just killing it this offseason. Awesome signing.

  19. grimreaper12 says: Apr 3, 2014 6:18 PM

    An upgrade on Pitta.
Seriously, 120 million to a guy who throws more interceptions than touchdowns, and a Tight End who’s career stats are mediocre ( Pitta ).

  20. z06vision says: Apr 3, 2014 6:23 PM

A 31 yr old…..Old and slower by the signing. Great job OZZIE. Show the other GM’s how it is done LOLOLOLOL

Really nice pickup by Ozzie, gonna make some interesting fantasy drafts

Another smart signing by the Oz….

  25. grimreaper12 says: Apr 3, 2014 6:44 PM

thanks to ozzie, mediocre qb’s will demand 100m deals. same with average te’s making 30m…the ravens have ruined the market.

  26. Nofoolnodrool says: Apr 3, 2014 6:50 PM

Seriously, You could count with 1 hand how many rings you guys got? 2…pff, yea continue to be proud of that?

Try 6 fingers with the Leagues best “lord of the rings” Yes we could always bring that up…Loser

  29. afcdomination says: Apr 3, 2014 6:59 PM

TE is a position that seems to be harder and harder to stay healthy. Tony Gonzalez had an amazing career with so few issues. lately, guys just get too many concussions and retire by 30, or get their legs torn up. Gronk can’t stay on the field. J.Finley with the head stuff, you see it everywhere. KC had 3 TE’s and lost all of them last year. 3rd round pick Kelce, Moeaki, and Fasano(most of year). that is ridiculous.

  30. baltimoresnativeson says: Apr 3, 2014 7:06 PM

The goal is championships, not stats.

Solid veteran cheap low maintenance backup TE that won’t win fantasy but will help you win REAL LIFE FOOTBALL GAMES.

    Excellent signing.

  31. partmachine says: Apr 3, 2014 7:11 PM

Baltimore is the only city in the world to hold a championship in every professional football league.

  32. minorsm says: Apr 3, 2014 7:16 PM

Six titles since 1933. Ravens 2 titles since 1996. Steelers fans y’all should have 6 one of the first teams to enter the league.

  33. baltimorons says: Apr 3, 2014 7:23 PM

Ravens keep getting older and older. Ha! Love it.

  34. ravensdominate says: Apr 3, 2014 7:24 PM

Yeah wow you hot 4 rings before all of us were born!! At least I experienced both our Super Bowl wins. Again, goodnight.

  35. sandy102270 says: Apr 3, 2014 7:39 PM

“thanks to ozzie, mediocre qb’s will demand 100m deals. same with average te’s making 30m”

Don’t blame the Ozzie for the lousy contracts Ben and Miller got.

  36. dcapettini says: Apr 3, 2014 7:40 PM

You know that the proud and accomplished Steelers of the past are gone by how their fans spend their time denigrating the Ravens. A few years ago the Ravens “weren’t rivals” because they did not win enough and now these same Steeler fans lurk the blogs to make juvenile remarks about anything posted about the Ravens. Do they do this for the Bengals too? They should. What a shame. A sad hulk of a once mighty football club and whiny little creeps squeaking at everyone else.

  37. jtbsteeler says: Apr 3, 2014 7:44 PM

5 years ago. I guess your internet was down.

This signing seals the deal I guess? Its a good pick up but the market was hardly getting wet over him at this stage in his career.

  40. beachsidejames says: Apr 3, 2014 7:58 PM

    Guess they aren’t taking Ebron.

  41. jtbsteeler says: Apr 3, 2014 8:13 PM

When is Flacco going make a wr some $$$? Pitta? With his paltry numbers. Ozzie overpaid and acknowledges that Flacco needs a security blanket, like Linus.

  42. ravenmadnky says: Apr 3, 2014 8:22 PM

I read an article yesterday quoting an unnamed AFC GM as saying Ebron is way overrated, and that the TE class is horrible. By this signing, I wonder if said GM wasn’t Ozzie. My Ravens draft fantasy: Houston drafts Clowney and trades back into first round for Raven’s #17 and drafts a qb. Per the draft trade value chart, Ravens would get Houston’s 2nd, 3rd and 4th round pics. Two 2’s, three 3’s and three 4’s sounds pretty awesome to me.

  43. SAV says: Apr 3, 2014 8:29 PM

I live for Ravens-hate! No one likes the new kid on the block stealing all the chicks and no one likes the expansion team infringing on the Lombardi love!

Joe Flacco multiple conference championships, took the Ravens to 5-6? Straight playoff appearances, a Superbowl MVP, greatest post season in NFL history, more road playoff wins then any active player, and never missed a game!

I could care less about stats, Ravens fans count WINS and LOSSES! You have your Peyton Failing and your Rapelisberger on a roll! We ain’t jealous!!! Joe will keep throwing picks, he’s a gunslinger, a modern day Farve! A gamer! A beast with a cannon that ain’t afraid to whip it! You call those BOMBS punts??? My man has a CANNON, are you guys blind???

Owen Daniels-thanks for being a backup and humbling yourself to play for the best. You will provide insurance and allow the Ravens to run Kubiaks offense to a tee. He will help the team acclimate to the new offense seamlessly. Ravens brilliant move, this guy will shine at times next year and a huge veteran presence.

People questioning his age? The guy has a 1 year deal. He can be cut if it dont work out and I guarantee the Ravens are drafting a TE to develop this year under Daniels 1 year deal, because that’s how Ozzie does. You bring in a vet for short term mentoring of a rookie. They dont want to put that on Pitta who needs to focus on becoming one of the best TE’S in the game.

  44. doe22us says: Apr 3, 2014 8:44 PM

This I will say is a great signing love Owen Daniels.

  45. patsfan1820 says: Apr 3, 2014 8:49 PM

Decent signing but he’s a risk.

  46. thekingdave says: Apr 3, 2014 8:57 PM

It’s safe to say there’s like a negative 10% chance of that happening. Given how thin the roster is (thanks Rick Smith, also thanks for throwing the coaching staff under the bus to save your job and hide your incompetence), if anything they’ll be trading down.

  47. patriotsarespygaters says: Apr 3, 2014 9:13 PM

Everyone wants to copy the popular New England patriot 2 TE set with gronk and Hernandez but your tightens will get injured see gronk Daniels is injury prone aswell the tight end won’t survive especially now u can’t hit high another torn acl

  48. realskipbayless says: Apr 3, 2014 9:21 PM

I hope he stinks it up for the ravens.

  49. realskipbayless says: Apr 3, 2014 9:24 PM

SAV please never put flacco and Favre in the same sentence again unless you are saying Brett Favre is way better than that scrub Joe flacco.

  50. sgruth33 says: Apr 3, 2014 9:36 PM

Will help with teaching Kubiaks offense. Solid blocker. However is also one of Kubiaks cronies. Kubiak protects his favorites and will play and target him more than he deserves. Pitta > Owens. While the run game will improve ravens fans should know Kubiak is very very stubborn. Doesn’t develop or adapt. Good luck with him Ravens fans. Us Houston fans have always respected your organization.

  51. enoughofthatalready says: Apr 3, 2014 9:37 PM

So you follow up the signing of a 34 year old WR with a 31 year old TE? Where is the 40 year old backup QB? Maybe Kurt Warner can come out of retirement. Delusions of grandeur.

  52. Canton Bulldogs says: Apr 3, 2014 10:26 PM

Last year Owen Daniels played 5 games. Ed Dickson played 16. They had close to the same receptions and total yards but Daniels had two more TDs. THAT is why this was done. I like it.

  53. steelcurtainn says: Apr 3, 2014 10:30 PM

lol….the ravens just became older…….this guy can’t help with jumpball on his back the entire game.

  54. getyourownname says: Apr 3, 2014 10:58 PM

“Old slow and hurt. Dallas Clark > Owens”

Probably why Terrell is no longer in the league.

  55. tom62215 says: Apr 3, 2014 11:14 PM

    I love this move.
    Oozzie is the best.

  56. troy43mvp says: Apr 4, 2014 8:25 AM

He has made a career of season ending injuries. Go ahead and celebrate.

  57. thebirdsareback says: Apr 4, 2014 8:32 AM

I dont see how people could be bummed about this move. Bringing in a savvy vet who is a proven pass catcher, unlike ed dickson who is just awful. With his injury concerns, I am sure ozzie will be getting mr. daniels services on what we football people call “THE CHEAP”. Its a great move by the OZ and Koobs is gonna have a great time coaching this offense. The Oline is already two times better with Zuttah and KO on the line. We will most definitely be drafting a Right Tackle, probably in the 2nd round. I expect lots of line value in the later rounds.
