Titans releasing Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson AP

Chris Johnson’s six-season run with Tennessee is officially over.

The Titans announced they will release Johnson, their star tailback, on Friday.

Johnson, 28, rushed for 7,965 yards and 50 touchdowns in regular season play for Tennessee, which drafted him in Round One in 2008. He has exceeded 1,000 yards rushing in all six of his NFL seasons, and he has missed just one game in that span.

At his best, Johnson has been a clear-cut blue-chip player — one of the game’s most dynamic tailbacks. He has 68 rushes and 15 receptions of 20 yards or more in his pro career. However, he gained a career-low 3.9 yards per carry a season ago, and he was due $8 million in salary in 2014.

“As an organization, we want to thank Chris for his contributions to the Titans. Chris produced many memorable moments, broke franchise records and was durable over his six year career with our team,” Titans G.M. Ruston Webster said in a statement issued by the club on Friday.

“We have had an open dialogue with Chris’ agent, Joel Segal, over the last few weeks, and we appreciate the patience and professionalism they have shown throughout this process. We made an effort to trade Chris but were unable to do so. We wish Chris the best and thank him for the six seasons he spent with us.”

Johnson’s best season came in 2009, when he rushed for 2,006 yards on 358 carries, gaining a college-like 5.6 yards per rush. While he hasn’t reached those heights since, he has been a stalwart for Tennessee.

Now, Johnson enters a market that hasn’t exactly been kind to running backs this offseason. Then again, Johnson has been far from ordinary for the vast bulk of an exceedingly productive NFL career.

So if New England was a finalist for MJD shouldn’t they be a front-runner for CJ2K? Get it done. Give Brady some weapons for these last 3-4 years!

well CJ2K is in for a shock when it comes to getting a new contract, no team is going to pay him the money he’s going to ask for in the current RB market.

As an Eagles fan I say, “If the Eagles put it a statement like this when they released DeSean there would have been a definitive answer and not speculation based on some report that may hold less water than a coffee filter”

Welcome to the New York Jets, Chris.

Good luck trying to run with 7-8 defenders in the box on 75% of the plays.

The era of 1st round running backs is dwindling. No reason to take one unless there is a generational prospect there like Adrian Peterson.

Seattle got Lynch for a 4th and a 5th, SF got Gore in the 5th, Arian Foster was UDFA…. spending really high picks on the position is meaningless anymore.

  34. grimreaper12 says: Apr 4, 2014 1:03 PM

  35. beardinals says: Apr 4, 2014 1:04 PM

    CJ.5K?

  36. jbruno15 says: Apr 4, 2014 1:04 PM

The guy is still an explosive home run threat. 3.9 yards a carry while playing injured is a career low. He’s not worth 8 million a year, but since when is 4 yards a carry something to scoff at?

  37. bakeberryjam says: Apr 4, 2014 1:04 PM

If he drops the “Me-First” attitude, I’m sure plenty of teams would love to have him.

  38. staffordsyear says: Apr 4, 2014 1:06 PM

Should have released him years ago instead of paying him that monster contract.

  39. trappin4life says: Apr 4, 2014 1:06 PM

CJ2K will fit into Jeff Tedfords’ ofeense. He says he wants players with ‘speed in space’. And we all know CJ has get away from the cop speed…

  40. thestrategyexpert says: Apr 4, 2014 1:07 PM

So my question still remains, if you could go back in time would the team choose to do anything different with Chris Johnson, or take the same path and end things the same way? And are there any other players on the team they should be addressing a contract situation with now so that something like this doesn’t happen again?

  41. igotgamenj says: Apr 4, 2014 1:11 PM

    Jeff Fisher drafted him…Rams

  42. ninerfan4 says: Apr 4, 2014 1:13 PM

Let’s just hope it’s not more than 3.9 yards to the unemployment line or he’ll never get there.

  43. armchairqb says: Apr 4, 2014 1:13 PM

    One season wonder.

Welcome to the Jets. Which is fitting, because it was former Jet Kevin Mawae who had more to do with CJ2K’s 2K than CJ did.

  44. jcus says: Apr 4, 2014 1:14 PM

  45. grantsbuds says: Apr 4, 2014 1:14 PM

    Still cowardly….

  46. cybersqueak says: Apr 4, 2014 1:16 PM

As a Titans fan I’m glad to see his attitude headed out of town, but on the field he’ll be hard to replace. The last two years half his runs have been met in the backfield by multiple defenders. CJ could return to the 2k club on a team with good interior blocking and a passing game.

Thanks for all the memories good and bad, CJ. Good luck on your next team, but please stay out of the AFC South.

  47. tennesseeoilers says: Apr 4, 2014 1:16 PM

In the last three years, the Titans have missed the playoffs by 1 game in two separate seasons. Chris Johnson will not PUT any team in playoff contention. His lackluster efforts, more than any other player’s cost us the wins we needed.

  52. thegonz13 says: Apr 4, 2014 1:24 PM

He will be with a new team by Monday, Tuesday tops. However, he Will be lucky to make half of what he did in Tennessee.

Let this also be a lesson to GM’s everywhere. Never give a big-money contract after a big statistical season. More often than not, it will turn out to be a flash in the pan.

The RB class of 2008 has not fared well:

    McFadden – underachieved
    J. Stewart – underachieved
    Felix Jones – NFL vagabond
    Mendenhall – retired
    C. Johnson – released

Only Jamaal Charles has exceeded expectations.

  57. vikesindividual says: Apr 4, 2014 1:30 PM

my God, will they just DO it already???

how many times do we have to read that they “will” release him, they “will” release him…. just friggin’ do it, already. no one is giving you ANY draft pick for him, so just give up on that idea.

  58. johnnyjagfan says: Apr 4, 2014 1:31 PM

He needs a career shot in the arm. I don’t see Whiz being able to deal w/ him at $8M. He should be a change of pace back in St. Louis to Zac Stacy’s power run. Should look for a home with a dome so he can run on carpet.

  59. samoanjungle says: Apr 4, 2014 1:33 PM

  62. jetsfaninindy says: Apr 4, 2014 1:36 PM

Jets need to offer 3 years 15 mill. That is above market at this point.
That will allow them to focus on getting WR2, a TE and a CB in the draft.

  63. texansfalcons says: Apr 4, 2014 1:40 PM

    Awesome talent but awful attitude.

  64. judalation says: Apr 4, 2014 1:41 PM

CJ thrived on a team with no offensive talent, resulting in him facing 9 men in the box with a terrible offensive line.

Do your self a favor CJ2K… go to a team that has a lot of offensive talent so you can face an easier task. And going to a division that has terrible run defense cant hurt. The best place would be the Colts… They play on turf, in a dome, And its the same division as the Titans… You get to make them regret cutting you twice a year! And in a weak run defense division. There is NO WAY they put 9 men in the box with Luck as QB. The only question is how good their offensive line is because it was bad last year. If you want a great offensive line then the Bills have Johnson and Williams and the cap space, and a young QB in EJ manual, Id say the Bills are the second best fit.

As for the Jets… Well Id be shocked if they offered CJ2K a competitive contract, but they play against the Dolphins and Pats, And their run defense is pretty good, Also there is no way CJ2K would not be facing 9 men in the box on every play when there is no number one WR and Vick is the starting QB (Geno sucks)

  65. slick50ks says: Apr 4, 2014 1:44 PM

    CJ1K, maybe.

  66. romomustdie says: Apr 4, 2014 1:47 PM

CJ can still be productive, elite even. Or did every one forget how god awful the titans O-line was. Not to mention a real QB and the threat of a passing game.

  74. thorn49 says: Apr 4, 2014 5:23 PM

That’s be realistic!!! A thing called cap space. Only a few teams have room to sign him. Miami has a better chance than the Jills or the foot fetish Jets. Oh and the Raiders who just signed MJD. Miami doesn’t need Daniels or Miller. Miller could end up being the 3rd back in the system. Hickey is on a roll and I think your going to be shocked this year with the Dolphins productivity. Go Fins

So CJ runs for 1000+ yards 6 straight years, plays in all but 1 game in his career and of course has a 2000+ yard rushing season…..and you don’t think he exceeded expectations? What expectations did you have of him entering the league?

  76. thebiffer says: Apr 4, 2014 7:57 PM

Hope Denver can sign him for around 4 million. Then the Broncos will truly be the favorite for the upcoming year
