Jim Kelly out of hospital, “praying for a miracle”

nba_a_jimk_cr_300x200 AP

As Hall of Fame Bills quarterback Jim Kelly prepares to undergo chemotherapy treatments, he has exited the hospital for the weekend.  Kelly attended Friday night’s Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, as a surprise for his daughter, Erin.

I probably shouldn’t even be here,” Kelly told MSG Network, via ESPN.com.

Starting Monday, he’ll have three chemotherapy sessions over a six-week period, and he’ll start daily radiation treatments.  Both are aimed at shrinking numerous small tumors spreading through his head.

“My big battle is Monday when I go in to start my radiation and chemo,” Kelly said. “I hope when it’s all over they get everything, but right now we’re praying for a miracle.”

A miracle could be within reach.

“Kelly’s condition remains very treatable and potentially curable,” Dr. Peter Costantino said in a statement issued Tuesday, via ESPN.com.  “Even if chemotherapy and radiation are not successful in eradicating the cancer, his skull-base tumor remains operable.”

Kelly has received support through the NFL and sports world.  He has noticed, and he appreciates it.

“Just keep praying for me,” Kelly said.  “I am going to need them.”

This guy is as tough as they come. You don’t put up the numbers he did — in Buffalo of all places — without having the stuff to overcome adversity. The big C is a menace, no question, but if anyone will fight it to end it’s Kelly.

Message for the persons voting thumbs down on these supportive posts for Jim Kelly:

Why don’t you step forward and explain why you feel a need to vote thumbs down, or are you too much of a coward?

Good luck, Jim, you’re a credit to professional football and a man worth looking up to.

  51. vintagedog says: Apr 5, 2014 6:40 PM

    @zhawk12
Atheists can’t stand people praying for others. Any comment referring to God, or HIS help, will get a thumbs down from the Earth’s scum. Sad they can’t allow others to believe as they will, but their way is the only way, in their minds, and everyone that feels differently needs to be belittled. What sad lives they must live.
Prayers for Kim Kelly and his family.

  52. racyman57 says: Apr 5, 2014 7:33 PM

Jim Kelly has been handed allot in his life. He has a son (or had a son, I don’t remember if he survived), that had an incurable disease and now he has to face this. Jim Kelly has always personified class, both on and off of the football field and represents how professional athletes are supposed to be real role models, for kids. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family. Jim is a tough dude and will, no doubt, fight it with all that he has.

  53. mexicangardener says: Apr 5, 2014 8:09 PM

You can sit on your arse and pretend that you’re sending telepathic signals for supernatural intervention like people have been futilely doing for 2000 years in order to feel better about yourselves or you can actually do something constructive and tangible to help those suffering like Mr. Kelly by donating to cancer research organizations so that one day, none of this will happen to begin with.

  54. briandavisradio says: Apr 5, 2014 8:15 PM

    GOD BLESS YOU Jim Kelly
My thought and prayer are with you.

    Hi Jim,
Big fan during those superbowl yrs,Beating this cancer is superbowl five, and you will finally get that ring.LOV-YA MAN,In my prayers

  57. bluesmoke44 says: Apr 5, 2014 8:51 PM

I remember Jim Kelly when he played at the U and then moved onto the Houston Gamblers of the USFL and passing for over 5200 yards. Then to the Bills and running that K-Gun offense. He is beyond a shadow of a doubt the original “Gunslinger”. And his skills at running that offense had me extremely worried during SB XXV and feel fortunate for “wide right”.While not being much of a a religious person myself Jim Kelly will be in my thoughts and I will be hoping for him a speedy and complete recovery from this horrible disease.
    Signed,
    A Giants fan

Jim, you’re in my prayers. I’ve gone through the same surgical procedures you have, and the radiation and chemo therapy and I beat it. If I, a simple man with not a lot of talent can do it, I know you can. Never stop believing. God does answer prayers.

  59. jimatmad says: Apr 5, 2014 10:04 PM

I ‘believe in’ science – medicine, cosmology, evolution. What is, is. Claiming it’s not is foolish.

I also believe in prayer. It works sometimes. Can’t be sure why, but I know it’s true.

We’re pulling for you Jim. Be strong.

  60. moonriver22 says: Apr 5, 2014 10:06 PM
