Agent says Burleson has joined the Browns

The Cleveland Browns have taken a deliberate and careful approach to free agency.  Slightly more deliberate and careful than their latest arrival was while driving with pizza in his car.

Receiver Nate Burleson has agreed to terms with the Browns on a one-year deal.  His agent, Ken Sarnoff, confirmed the development to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

Burleson, cut by the Lions earlier in the offseason, recently visited the Dolphins before visiting Cleveland.

An 11-year veteran, Burleson has spent three years with the Vikings, four with the Seahawks, and four with the Lions.  He joins a depth chart led by Josh Gordon, Greg Little, and newcomer Andrew Hawkins.

Burleson may need to nail down at least the second or third spot on the depth chart; otherwise, he risks being cut in favor of a younger player who would be cheaper — and who would more readily contribute on special teams.

UPDATE 10:08 p.m. ET:  The Browns have announced Burleson’s arrival.

    Jacksonville Jaguars on the rise.

    Rest in peace.

Potentially great signing. I see Brown’s drafting linebacker Mack and Carr in first round.

The Panthers gm hasn’t done a thing to help the receiving core in Carolina

Diamond Dave Caldwell will call Cleveland’s bluff.

Why is it funny to joke about someone breaking a bone in a serious car accident?
Let me give you a clue: it isn’t

  6. blackngold4life says: Apr 6, 2014 9:58 PM

Ppl keep LOL @ the Browns but if Hoyer plays like he did last year they’ll put up points and the Defense just keeps getting better..

  7. bensstinkyfingers says: Apr 6, 2014 9:59 PM

Hey if Nate is willing to break his arm to save a pizza, I imagine he’ll put in more effort than the browns have got out of Greg Little so far. Still hoping they draft Watkins at #4 to give the browns on of , if not the most lethal WR corps in the NFL.

  8. kwjsb says: Apr 6, 2014 10:00 PM

They still need a guy who ca be an Insurance policy in case Gordon takes a toke and gets his year long ban.

    #4) Watkins
    #26) Yankey
    #35) Hyde/Mason

package a 3rd and 4th to move up and secure Aaron Murray to learn and develop behind Hoyer …

  9. nviverson says: Apr 6, 2014 10:01 PM

I like it!! Definitely an upgrade over Little…if he can stay healthy.

  10. believeland2014 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:02 PM

The Browns Run The NFL. FACT!

  11. bennyb82 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:02 PM

The Browns are making some great moves. If Burleson can stay healthy and the Browns draft the right qb or Hoyer plays like he did prior to the injury, this team could be good. Gordon, Cameron, Burleson, and Hawkins/Little? Better receiving group than a lot of teams. Im not a Browns fan but if I was I’d be pumped.

In London or LA maybe but not in Jacksonville.

  13. ballboy48 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:04 PM

Added depth is how you win games. I wonder what is going to happen with Greg Little. If they draft Watkins or Evans, he’s pretty much gone.

  14. fordmandalay says: Apr 6, 2014 10:08 PM

Guess he’s going to have to learn how to throw the ball to himself

  15. ytownjoe says: Apr 6, 2014 10:09 PM

    Little is gone anyway. Butterfingers.

  16. bassplucker says: Apr 6, 2014 10:11 PM

Burleson is average at best but he’s easily the 2nd best WR on the Browns roster as it currently stands. They had still better lock up a stud WR in the draft though cause if Gordon gets suspended Burleson is nowhere close to #1 material and neither are any of the other guys.

  17. deerhuntinfool71 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:11 PM

Tomorrows headlines will read. ” Greg little released by cleveland browns”

  18. joemammy says: Apr 6, 2014 10:15 PM

Burleson will be the #3 receiver for Cleveland.
Coincidentely, Jacksonville will continue to be the 3rd best team in the State of Florida…unless youre counting FSU. Then, the Jags fall to #4.

  19. jmblosser82 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:16 PM

Let’s be honest, it’s the browns. Somehow a wrench will get tossed in the cogs and halt progress. On paper the browns are a playoff team but buying your team in free agency rarely pays off, ask the dolphins.

  20. slamdunk says: Apr 6, 2014 10:25 PM

I think it is a smart choice by Burleson. He goes from benefiting from defenses focusing on Megatron to defenses that will be consumed with stopping Gordon.

When he is healthy, he can get open facing single coverage.

Unfortunately, you just never know who the Browns will have at QB–definitely a revolving door.

  21. Matt dog from C-town says: Apr 6, 2014 10:27 PM

This definitely creates more competition at the receiver spot….like new G.M. says ” we must create more competition at every position on the team” no jobs are guaranteed… many players here have felt entitled to their starting jobs……no more!!!!

  22. jermainewiggins says: Apr 6, 2014 10:27 PM

Im kinda interested where the browns are heading. Not saying theyre gonna be great but draft sammy watkins, carr or garrapolo and a line backer with 26 and 35

  23. slaugin says: Apr 6, 2014 10:27 PM

Trade a 3 and a 4 to to move up and get Murray? From what I’ve read he will be there in the 3/4 round. Then again it’s the Browns and you might be on to something

  24. redandgoldhitman52 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:27 PM

the browns couldn’t make the playoffs if their live’s depended on it.

  25. andrewluck12 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:47 PM

Still need a qb. I get Hoyer was playing good but lets be real here he’s a journeyman back up. Hopefully for browns fans they make some noise. Put those pompous sleeler and ravens fans in their place

  26. rrthomasxyz says: Apr 6, 2014 10:52 PM

Burleson will make the Brown’s roster. You need to keep 5-6 receivers on a roster. He can still catch, just don’t ask him to drive and eat pizza at the same time.

  27. gergie1957 says: Apr 6, 2014 10:56 PM

Sign Brett Farve , He’s the only one that ever made Nate look good.

  28. thetooloftools says: Apr 6, 2014 11:06 PM

Now get us a gun to throw it to.
    I am so loving this.

  29. jermainewiggins says: Apr 6, 2014 11:30 PM

honest question: when did brett favre play with nate burleson?

  30. aldavis4president says: Apr 6, 2014 11:40 PM

Brown’s need to go Mack, Carr, and grab a WR in the 2nd. They have a number 1 in Gordon, no need to have 2 at the moment when you have other spots to fill. Browns have been rly close to being a playoff team for about 2 years now. They’re record rly Dsnt show what kind of team they have. They have money too go grab cj1.2k , with that oline hell be good again.

  31. grimreaper12 says: Apr 6, 2014 11:56 PM

Who’s going to throw him the ball? Maybe Hoyer, if he can return to 100%.
At least they fleeced the Colts!

  32. blueballz77 says: Apr 7, 2014 12:31 AM

I’m not a browns fan but no Wr being a #1 ? Gordon is a beast, easy In the top 5 in Nfl

  33. rainmaker1982 says: Apr 7, 2014 12:43 AM

The Browns weren’t his first choice as he lobbied on NFLN why the Pats should sign him. He publicly stated he wanted to play for the Pats.

  34. 1harrypairatesties says: Apr 7, 2014 12:59 AM

The Browns?! You left the Lions & Stafford for the Browns?! Good luck with that Nate.

  35. louiedogg16 says: Apr 7, 2014 1:22 AM

Browns will be decent someday, but its difficult to see them getting by the Broncos, Pats, Chiefs, and Colts when it comes down to it.

  36. ravensbob says: Apr 7, 2014 2:36 AM

    Another mistake by the lake.

  37. madmikepromo says: Apr 7, 2014 3:11 AM

I guess its good. I mean they are Browns.. It usually turns out terrible

  38. hoopieguy says: Apr 7, 2014 3:38 AM

I just want my Browns to be respectable again. Make other teams worry about going to C-Town to play a game. I was there in the 80’s when Bernie and Company averaged over 30 points a game and steam-rolled the AFC. It could happen again, and it would be good for the NFL.

  39. razzlejag says: Apr 7, 2014 5:53 AM

    Jeromegarcia- stay classy.

The Browns and the Jags are interesting teams to watch as they rise from the ashes. I like what the Browns have done and hope it works out for the team and for the great Cleveland fans. The more good teams the better.
On Burleson, though, I’m meh. Not a great signing, just another small piece in place but he could help, especially if he gives good locker room.

  41. bengalskuta82 says: Apr 7, 2014 7:53 AM

I think the Cleveland Clownz should be able to win at least 6 games. That would be huge for that pathetic fan base that doesn’t quite seem to understand what winning in the NFL is about. I mean how can that stadium sellout every year for a dysfunction organization????
    Good luck!

  42. jerruhjones says: Apr 7, 2014 8:30 AM

Burleson > Little. End of story.

  43. civilwarfish says: Apr 7, 2014 8:59 AM

Burleson is a great signing. do agree that hes not our #2 but hes the guy who keep us relevant on the field when the #1 or #2 have to sit down. And in case of injury he can step in and play.

This offseason has been fun to watch. Farmer is building a team with at least enough depth to withstand a little damage although the depth is still what is going to keep us from serious contention for at least another year. The AFC North is a tough division and to take this division depth is key.

A quarterback…possibly two…coming in the draft. I like Bian Hoyer, but not sure he is the next Bernie. But then again Bernie was not technically a good quarterback. But he got the job done and he was supremely confident. Hoyer strikes me the same way. His confidence showed thru the 2 1/2 games he started and in preseason last year as well. He deserves a full shot at the job and let any rookie or rookies develop.

I really like the direction of this team. I feel good about Mike Pettine. I feel good about Ray Farmer. I feel good about Jimmy Haslam. The three stooges have been replaced by the Three Amigos. They can become Cleveland Legends if they keep this direction progressing.

Factory of Gladness is being built. Beware the Elf… Fear the elf!

    GO BROWNS!!!

Don’t know how much Nate has left in the tank, but as far as likable players go, he is one of the greats. Always loved hearing interviews with him during his years with his hometown ‘Hawks. Wish him the best in Cleveland.

  46. kosarkid says: Apr 7, 2014 9:32 AM

A great signing to add depth. I would’ve liked to see a 2 year deal for this guy though, but he’s a solid addition to our WR. I will agree that he is better than Little. Hopefully this puts more pressure on Little to learn how to play the game. Little has the athletic ability to be a solid #2 WR, he just needs a lot more development, and at this point in his career, he’s way behind where he should be.

  47. lks311 says: Apr 7, 2014 9:46 AM

Wake me when they get a legit QB. Til then, this is all a lot of low level noise.

  48. gunshiplollipop says: Apr 7, 2014 9:50 AM

Apparently, Nate was too ashamed to admit it.

I think a better question is how a team that has had some success in recent years NOT sellout every game and are constantly battling blackouts? Talk about a pathetic fan base. Oh, and the Browns have 8 championships 3rd most in NFL history. How many do the Bengals have?

  50. purpleguy says: Apr 7, 2014 10:19 AM

I’m Surprised the Lions let him go since he was about the only guy in the locker room willing to speak to the media.

  51. jermainewiggins says: Apr 7, 2014 11:54 AM

Hbdbrowns.. are you that proud of the browns 8 nfl championships? Lmfao wow

Why are jag fans on here saying how bad the browns are? You do realize you finished 4-12 just like us and pick before us in the draft, right?
