Panthers hosting Jason Avant on Monday

While it’s not the former Eagles receiver most Panthers fans wanted to see come to Charlotte, any former Eagles receiver will help improve the Carolina depth at this point, up to and including Harold Carmichael.

Fortunately, a slightly more recent former Eagles wideout will visit the Panthers on Monday:  Jason Avant.

Cut earlier this year after the Eagles re-signed Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper, Avant has drawn limited interest on the open market.

A seven-year veteran, Avant started a career-high 13 games in 2013.

The Panthers cut Steve Smith and lost Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn to free agency.  Since then, the Panthers have added Tiquan Underwood and Jerricho Cotchery.  G.M. Dave Gettleman opted not to pursue aggressively big-name free agents like DeSean Jackson, Kenny Britt, and Hakeem Nicks.

  1. Classy dude, selfless player, a natural leader for the locker room and the field. Casualty of the “business” of the NFL, I would say and I hope the Panthers (or any organization that would utilize his talents) pick him up.

And PS, DeSean doesn’t get the Miracle in the Meadowlands II Punt Return if it’s not for a key block Avant throws down, separating his shoulder in the process.

  2. He is not top flight, however a great lunch pal receiver. Made plays when he had to. Great character in the locker room. A variety solid player as a veteran, till younger receivers are ready to take the reins. Will miss him in Philadelphia.

  3. Certainly an excellent #4, money on 3rd down, catches a high % of balls thrown his way and an even higher # that touch his hands. Great in the locker room, wish he was still in ours.

  4. Is it just me or does it seem like Avant has been in the league a LOT longer than 7 years?

  5. Has lost a step, and never had much speed to begin with but has phenomenal hands, is a great route runner, great blocker, and great teammate.

  6. Jerricho Cotchery and Jason Avant as the two starting WR’s in CAR… I don’t care for Cam Newton but even I feel sorry for him.

  7. Not sure what they are trying to accomplish there in Carolina??? Talk about taking one step forward during the season then three back after the season

  8. Panthers picked a good year to clean house at WR. Plenty of talent. They just need to draft at least 3 of them and the reality is, they little needs elsewhere on the field.

  9. Am I reading this right ?

The Eagles cut Avant and the Panthers cut Smith ?

Where is the NFLPA ? this needs to be investigated !

What is going on in the NFL these days.

Teams cutting players they don’t want

    I am appalled !

Jason is a good receiver and a great guy get him while you can Carolina

  10. Avant is becoming a rarity in the NFL.. A man, not a punk, not a diva, just a man who gives 100 percent effort and strives to use his abilities as best he can. He never was a top notch superior athlete, but he has more brains than two thirds of the “professionals” he dresses with on game day. He will be in the league long after his playing days are over. As a coach or in a administration role. A man’s man and a classy guy…

  11. Gettleman brought in journeymen FAs last year and we went 12-4. Once he clears Hurney’s contract mistakes the Panthers will be a perennial playoff team.

The Redskins would never bring in Avant. They don’t concern themselves with silly things like class, leadership, and guys who give back to the community. Let’s be real here.

  13. Avant and Cotchery are the same guy. Both are good complimentary WRs, but in Carolina, they are being asked to be primary. Their age and limited abilities make you scratch your head.

The reliance and hope for the draft may exist, but history shows that college WRs take a year or two, to develop. Can Underwood be a WR1 or are we looking to get one from the draft?

Either way, there is a reason you want your WR1 to be a vet, even though there are several good ones to choose from, who is a WR1 as a rookie?

My SLEEPER is Martavis Bryant, Clemson. Again, the learning curve is too steep for all of them 1st year.

  14. Well the way I see it, regardless of the different opinions on here, if Avant is a better product and option than Lafell, then it’s a good pick up IF we sign him.

  15. Avant is still a #3 or #4 receiver but would be a good addition is signed. The Panthers needs to sign a veteran OT soon. Byron “Turnstile” Bell is not the answer at LT. A decent PR/KR would be nice also. Barner and Pilares not he answer here either. Avant is a good prospect and I hope they sign him.

  16. Here’s to hoping Avant gets signed. He’s a great guy. He is also very reliable in terms of receiving. The knock on him will be because of his lack of athleticism he gets less and less effective as the field gets smaller but he’ll definitely help you get in the red zone.

  17. Dont feel sorry for cam when hes passing all over your sorry defence buddy . People including some panther fans acting like our seasons over because we dident make much moves in the freeagency . We got the draft thats where the stars come from not the freeagency keep pounding panther fans and keep getting pounded all other teams

  18. As has been said, Avant has great hands and is a wonderful lock room presence. It shouldn’t be under estimated the impact a guy with his character could have on rookie WRs that Carolina might draft. Avant one of the best work ethics in the NFL, puts the team above himself and gets every last ounce out of his abilities.

A really good possession receiver who just isn’t tall enough to be the jump ball type of dominate receiver and isn’t fast enough to be the stretch the field dominate receiver. He is just a good route running possession receiver, gets open by out smarting the defense not on athletics alone.

  19. To the person who says WRs take a few seasons to make an impact, Megatron, Keenan Allen, Randy Moss and Keyshawn Johnson all beg to differ. It really depends on how well the WR fits into the system … Gettleman is the guy who unearthed an undrafted gem in Victor Cruz … But let’s not let facts get in the way of everything …

  20. Whoever previously said up there avants hands turns to stone is an idiot. The guy didn’t drop a pass for two straight seasons. He isn’t the most gifted athlete but throw the ball his way and pick up yards every time. He was under utilized in Philly
