Panthers talking to Colin Cole about return

8dd08075e07e06b72d426362319de289 AP

When the Panthers signed defensive tackle Colin Cole last February, he had not appeared in an NFL game since 2010.

The shot on Cole wound up working out pretty well. Cole started 13 times for a defense that was essential to Carolina’s division title, recording 15 tackles and a sack. Ankle injuries had kept Cole, who was a starter for the Seahawks in 2009 and 2010, off the field for the two previous seasons.

Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that the Panthers are interested in an encore. The team is reportedly in contract talks with Cole, who made the veteran’s minimum of $840,000 last year. There haven’t been murmurs of other interest in Cole, so he likely won’t be making much more than the minimum next season either.

Although he started most of the season, Cole played fewer snaps than Dwan Edwards and Kawann Short overall and would likely be limited to a lower rung in the rotation again in 2014 if he winds up back with the Panthers.

Dude was cut by Seattle set out a year and then signed with us, he was a solid rotational guy who helped Star and Short transition better into the game (with the help of Dwan Edwards)

It felt good watching our rotation of DT’s, two young and two vets. Short lived the the days of McClain and Fua……..

Man there’s a lot of ex-Packers players floating around the league.

Pretty good draft pick by Ted Thompson for the Packers and I am glad to see he is still getting a shot.

Few late round picks last as long as he has.

Seems to me the Panthers have bigger fish to fry right now than backup DTs. Like, WR.

The Panthers need help with WR, OL, and PR/KR on special teams. They have done nothing during free agency so far to address these needs and what they have on the roster now is unproven and totally inadequate. They had addressed their defensive concerns only and mainly in the secondary. They are doing well at DT but apparently want more. Gettleman has a plan?????????????

It’s just too bad he wasn’t a draft pick. Or that Mike Sherman brought him in the year before Thompson came to Green Bay.

Otherwise you’re pretty much right on….
