LSU’s Zach Mettenberger’s dance card filling up

AP

Not every team that needs a quarterback is going to be able to take one in the first round, or may not want to.

So LSU’s Zach Mettenberger is shaping up as someone who could appeal to those shopping in the high reaches of the second round.

According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, Mettenberger will fly to Jacksonville Thursday to meet with the Jaguars the day after his pro day workout.

He also has private meetings set up in Baton Rouge with the Raiders, Vikings, Lions and Titans. Teams can go to campus and work him out, while in-house visits are just for interviews.

Proving himself well is the first step, after his November ACL tear. He’s scheduled to go through all the drills at pro day Wednesday, and the amount of interest shown by those teams picking at the top of the draft order might be a good sign for him.

While it’s unlikely he’d go between third and 11th overall, the possibility of going between 36th and 45th is intriguing.

  1. Spent last year learning under Cam Camron so that should help his stock. I just don’t see Mettenberger as an NFL starting QB. I see like a Mike Glennon 2.0.

  2. He’ll ride a bench for a year or two, change teams and ride their bench for a year or two, and then he’ll be released to his next job. He’ll be out of the NFL in no time. He’s got the arm but he’s brittle and has ZERO mobility.

brittle?he had a erious knee injury in the LAST game of the year,in the 4th quarter, using that logic, hes sturdier than louis nix,,,,,lack of mobility?you mean like marino?or bledsoe? or aikman?

Pretty sure Peyton Manning proved that you don’t need to be very mobile to be a great nfl QB.

  5. ^^^ no arm?!? You must be a gator fan. I’ve been saying since last year, this kid reminds me a lot of Tom Brady, his deep ball is a little inaccurate , but he definitely has an arm. Hopefully my raiders snag him in the 2nd or 3rd, don’t think he’ll be there any later than that

  6. Just saw you said he’s GOT the arm, thought it read “no arm” haha. Still, he’s going to have a future in the nfl.

  7. As an LSU fan, I don’t think Mettenberger will be anything better than just okay at the NFL level. He’s worth a 3rd round pick as a developmental prospect but anything above that is too high. He’s got a good arm but he just hasn’t put together the entire package.

  8. my guess is 2 of the best prospects both tore acl zack and aaron murray another qb who will probably land on a team and may play if the 1st stringer gets hurt. and like others have said may eventuallty start in 2-3 years under the right coaches and system!!

  9. Any team thinking about drafting this guy should look at the Who’s Who of LSU QBs in the NFL: Matt Flynn, JaMarcus Russell, Matt Mauck, Rohan Davey(who?), Josh Booty.
Let’s just leave at “LSU is not known as a QB factory.”

  10. I’ve watched almost all the LSU games last year and this kid can throw the ball. He also did decent under a PRO style offense. Just needs better decision making and you’ve got yourself a starting caliber quarterback.

  11. I’m no LSU fan, but to me, this is the kid that’s the dark horse star in this draft. I believe he’s the one that’s going to outshine two and maybe even all three of the QBs taken in the first round.

  12. Pats will take him in the 3rd. They can afford to redshirt him a yr and develop his mechanics, ie eliminate the big windup that Brady had coming out. Big arm, winner, perfect fit for a team that doesn’t have to play him right away. Cross between Roethlisberger and Flacco.

  13. Best arm in the draft by far. Will have one of the best arms in the league but horrible mobility and an apparent weakness in making quick decisions and adjustments will make him struggle at next level.
Don’t blame LSU for Jamarcus Russell. Only a senile Al Davis was fooled.
