The Bears, who are lacking in quarterback depth, have reportedly met with a prominent unsigned passer coming off a forgettable 2013 season.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS, the Bears visited with free agent quarterback Josh Freeman on Monday. Aaron Wilson of National Football Post reported that Freeman had a workout with Chicago.
The 26-year-old Freeman struggled throughout last season. He lost his starting job and roster spot after three games with Tampa Bay, which released the 2009 first-round pick on October 3. The Vikings signed Freeman, but in his lone start, he completed just 20-of-53 passes, and he suffered a concussion. Ultimately, he didn’t play again for the Vikings.
It wouldn’t be surprising if the Bears increased the competition for the primary reserve role behind Jay Cutler. At present, the Bears have Jerrod Johnson and Jordan Palmer as backup quarterbacks. In Chicago, Freeman would have the benefit of working with coach Marc Trestman, who is renowned for his tutelage of quarterbacks.
In short, Chicago looks like a good landing spot for Freeman, who likely will have to work his way back into a starting role. News of the visit with the Bears is a sliver of good news for a player who had a tough run in 2013.
In addition to Freeman, the Bears put quarterback Adam Weber through a workout on Monday, according to La Canfora. The 26-year-old Weber was with the Buccaneers last summer.
