Saints match offer sheet signed by Rafael Bush in Atlanta

The Saints had until Tuesday to match the offer sheet signed last week by safety Rafael Bush with the Falcons.  The Saints opted not to prolong the suspense.

Per a league source, the Saints have indeed matched the offer.  Bush hinted strongly that the offer had been matched by tweeting, “I’m still a saint yep.”

Last year, Bush appeared in 13 games with six starts.  He’ll be deferring to starters Jairus Byrd and Kenny Vaccaro, barring injury.

Acquired on waivers in 2012 from the Broncos, Bush appeared in 16 games with no starts during his first season in New Orleans.  His second season in New Orleans ended with a $21,000 fine from an illegal hit applied to Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin during the divisional round of the playoffs.

The best news is that Saints fans who still have Reggie Bush jerseys can wear them without feeling too far out of style; Rafael Bush wears No. 25, too.

  4. 87hollywoodhorn says: Apr 7, 2014 4:35 PM

phew thank goodness, dude is very much underrated. I was worried the falcons were gonna snatch him.
    Byrd and Bush at free
    Vacaro and Ball at strong
Saints are pretty set at safety can look elsewhere in the draft.

Seattle may have a better starting bunch, but I dont think there’s a team in the league that is as deep in the secondary as the saints are right now.

We MIGHT have a plan after all. I had (and still do) questions about us signing a “long in the tooth” Champ Bailey but letting RB go to Atl. It’s not that RB is that great of a player but he is young and has potential. I ain’t mad at him but I believe Champ and his agent took Mickey and Sean Bourbon St. bar hopping before they negotiated with the Saints.

  7. bearwithjetpack says: Apr 7, 2014 4:48 PM

How do the Saints even still have money to match the offer sheet?

There is some voodoo magic afoot.

  8. bmorefalcon says: Apr 7, 2014 4:48 PM

Yes Saints, well played. I love that you have $75 million dollars worth of Safties. Keep it up, “Capmaster.”

Now, tell me more about how you are going to win the division again. Just like last year with the return of Sean Payton.

  9. painz1 says: Apr 7, 2014 4:49 PM

They at again cheating that is how u go from 1 million to sign champ and bush which is 11 million over 2 years nfl security or goodell do your job can’t u see some of this is false books and contracts payin under the table all that I’m a packer fan but just sayin dam!

  11. tavia47 says: Apr 7, 2014 4:53 PM

I don’t think a guy with “Falcons” in his username should be talking trash about last season in any capacity.

  16. painz1 says: Apr 7, 2014 5:17 PM

We understand the cap the question is how much they over and who is to look at it being correct the draft distraction not to mention they gotta sign they draft pics come on dude are u serious

  17. saintswin says: Apr 7, 2014 5:25 PM

You know that RB staying with the Saints stings those Falconette trolls. Mickey Loomis pulls another rabbit out of the hat!

  18. faninninerland says: Apr 7, 2014 5:32 PM

    Loomis for Congress! Deficit schmeficit.

  19. boisestatewhodat says: Apr 7, 2014 5:34 PM

Saints OWN the falcons!! This is just getting too funny…NOLA has the best front office in all of football!

  20. silentcount says: Apr 7, 2014 5:35 PM

Looks like Mickey Loomis is winning the Superbowl for NFL general managers. He keeps pulling off what the “experts” say isn’t possible. He’s a key reason to the Saints’ success.

  21. allidoiswin55 says: Apr 7, 2014 5:43 PM

*Seattle still has a better secondary and more depth than the saints

I like the saints but the Seahawks head coach is a former db and specializing in developing DBS . It’s not a coincidence they have in heard of depth back their . If I remember correctly you also said Seattle was screwed when just before MNF they lost two of the top 3 starting cbs . It’s simple Seattle finds specific skill sets in DBS that others are trying emulate . To
Me Seattle is years ahead of teams in that department .

However the saints are a well built machine that’s looking to reload with youth and key pieces to maintain the level we’ve all grown accustom to seeing which is extremely dangerous and competitive . Good luck I think you are the best overall team in the conference but things change quickly sometimes . And bc I’m poking fun i hope. Meet you in the playoffs again in Seattle always makes for a beast quake haha .

  22. mattryansnoodlearm says: Apr 7, 2014 5:47 PM

@bmorefalcon, sit down…you sound butt hurt…your team won 4 games last season. IN LOOMIS WE TRUST.

  23. beastnola says: Apr 7, 2014 5:49 PM

They run a lot of 3 safety sets….he’s technically a starter for us….Glad we got him back…..champ must be going all out for corner….I hope he can get a little bit of swag back and do something…

  24. mattryansnoodlearm says: Apr 7, 2014 5:52 PM

Can somebody get Loomis an award?? He’s like a magician. Except instead of pulling a rabbit out of a hat, he pulls money out of thin air. IN LOOMIS WE TRUST.

Three safety set. #dope package. Look out

  27. bcooper99 says: Apr 7, 2014 6:08 PM

What the falcons should do is trade back and pick up Ha-Ha Clinton Dix and then build the D line and O line with depth

  28. allidoiswin55 says: Apr 7, 2014 6:18 PM

    *best team in the division

  29. nickinneohio says: Apr 7, 2014 6:48 PM

AWESOME!! Half of the Saints fans rocking the gear of a back up safety to games!!

  30. 504in860 says: Apr 7, 2014 7:02 PM

Is there a fan base in the NFL who knows less about football than Falcons fans?

  31. cnola23 says: Apr 7, 2014 7:12 PM

We got the killer B’s… Bush,Byrd, and Bailey. ..oh man we also got Lewis and Vaccarro. This will be one the best secondaries of all time.

  32. barrywhodat says: Apr 7, 2014 7:16 PM

Hey painzi why don’t you get over fgoodell’s lies about the SAINTS, there never was any proof of a bounty, in the 3 years of the SAINTS so called bounty seasons the SAINTS didn’t have one player make the media’s yearly 50 dirtiest player list, they were never lower than 25th in the league in personnel foul penalties, and don’t tell me about the NFC Championship game. As Adrian Peterson said it was a hard fought game nothing more nothing less and if you want to say the SAINTS defense went after Favre go back and watch the game again and see the plays where Drew was driven into the ground on his throwing shoulder by the Vikings, it was a hard fought game with the winner going to the Super Bowl. The only people who got away with the bounty nonsense was fgoodell, and the people who were screwed were both the SAINTS & THE FANS OF THE WHO DAT NATION by fgoodell who was trying to distract everyone from the concussion lawsuit. The reason the SAINTS have gotten so good since 2006 is because of Great Owner Tom Benson, the best coach in the FNFL Sean Payton, the best GM Mickey Loomis, and the best QB in the league Drew Brees!!! There was absolutely no cheating by the SAINTS and the only people who were cheated were the SAINTS & The WHO DAT NATION, SO GET THE HECK OVER IT, I FOR ONE AM SICK & TIRED OF HEARING THE bountygate LIES PROPAGATED BY FOOLS LIKE YOU!!! WHO DAT NATION RULES!!!

Please explain how tge Saints came out tge winners here. You were forced to pay an additional 1.1 M a year for a backup safety. As an outsider looking in, it appears the Falcons forced your hand and furthermore put you more in cap deficit.

  34. 504in860 says: Apr 7, 2014 9:05 PM

    antcap24:

Saints came out winners (off the field this time over the Falcons) because they kept a starting-caliber player away from a division “rival.” Also, there is no such thing as a “cap deficit” when it comes to Loomis.

Once again, Loomis > Dimitroff. Dimitroff might be okay at drafting, but he absolutely sucks at free agency.

What cap deficit? LOL. They are still under the cap and will have plenty of money for rookies and draft picks.

Is this the National Football League or the National Saving-Room-Under-the-Salary-Cap League?

  36. jmbishop023 says: Apr 7, 2014 9:46 PM

During the off-season, only the top 51 contracts are counted toward the cap. Since it was the lowest possible tender, the saints cap is probably unchanged.

  40. michaelh47 says: Apr 8, 2014 1:47 AM

What short memories we have.. As I recall last season the Saints barley squeezed by the falcons, who were beaten and battered on D and O. Can’t wait until this year when I get to see you Saints fans eat bird crap.. The Birds Shall rise up dudes..

  41. cursedvikings1998 says: Apr 8, 2014 2:02 AM

Nice try Falcons. Rafael Bush is one of the most underrated safeties in the league.

  42. salimthadream20 says: Apr 8, 2014 3:01 AM

Was really hoping the Saints wouldnt match! Bush would have been a big step up over Decoud who used to be a good Safety but struggled horribly last year! Oh well!

  43. antcap24 says: Apr 8, 2014 5:05 AM

I am sure that over the next two years a player like Jimmy Graham wouldnt mind that 1.1 extra in his pocket rather than the player hes toasting on the scout team. Im sure oh great Loomis has a plan come August when hes forced to make some cuts on players that would actually factor in substantial playing time.
Rafael Bush played well in a limited role, but I hope you didnt force the Falcons hand in drafting a real FS talent early in the draft instead of a flash in the pan UDFA from SC State

  44. lucasblack12 says: Apr 8, 2014 11:30 AM

Back up safety? Bush will be in that hybrid safety/linebacker role, you falcons need to learn a thing or two about the defense that owned you last year. #failcons

  45. antcap24 says: Apr 8, 2014 2:00 PM

I understand sub packages and what a Big nickel entails. Fact remains he played only enough to amount an average of 3 tackles a game plsying all ST as well. Last year with Jenkins as your FS he was put ib to play center field deep safety. I don’t see his production or time increasing due to your upgrade in Byrd. What do I know… 2.25 M offeted to him has to get Graham kooking for a huge payout

  46. bonefideatlanta says: Apr 8, 2014 3:20 PM

This was a total loss for the falcons they should have gotten bush. He is a aggressive player and the Atlanta Falcons need a player like Rafael Bush in the back field. Dummy move for the Atlanta Falcons they make bad decisions.

  47. nonyt says: Apr 8, 2014 8:35 PM

    “Dirty player.”

Why? Because he’s a hard hitter and a good tackler? Percy Harvin is made of glass. He’d brake is leg stumbling over lint.
