Former NFL player Brandon Winey has been arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder in the Friday shooting of former LSU linebacker Tahj Jones.

The New Orleans Times Picayune reports that police say the 36-year-old Winey got into a fight with Jones and then pulled a gun late on Friday night.

Winey produced a handgun and shot Jones in the abdomen,” police said.

Winey also played at LSU. He was a sixth-round draft pick of the Dolphins in 2001 and bounced around the league for a few years, playing a total of 24 regular-season games.

Jones is a senior at LSU who recently worked out at LSU’s Pro Day. He is not expected to be drafted, but could catch on with some team as an undrafted free agent. He had emergency surgery overnight and is currently in serious condition.

  1. What ever happened to just fighting it out with your fists? When it comes to someone pulling a gun in a fight and shooting someone else in the abdomen, as they say in Pulp Fiction, it should be “No trial, no jury. Straight to execution.”

and yet this turd is just being charged with attempted 2nd degree murder?? I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up serving less time than Plaxico Burress did for shooting his own leg.

  2. It does happen in Pittsburgh pal, remember when your linebacker got shot in the a$$ at Colorado state

Doesn’t happen in baseball. Just saying

No? Wasn’t Seattle Mariners’ Greg Halman stabbed to death by his brother a couple years ago?

  4. How come we don’t hear about these stories in the NHL and mlb? It makes this lifelong NFL fan sick that they have(had)players like this in the league .when is enough enough?

  5. There are websites that track LSU football players crimes. Shootings, threatening police officers, carnal knowledge of an underage person, not to mention the second all time biggest bust in Jamarcus fatbutt. I lived in Louisiana for seven years. Somehow this article does not surprise me.

  6. Because of where people in the NFL talent pool come from. That’s why its an NFL problem and not MLB. Baseball doesn’t recruit in south central and south Florida.

  7. Guns are cool! We never have enough guns in this country…I’m sure this is EXACTLY what the founding fathers had in mind…

I’m sure the founding fathers would never have believed the collective intelligence level of society could get so low. These idiots were weeded out back then either by justice or “Darwinian intervention”. Stupid people rarely saw 25 years old

I thought all the gun nuts were in Nevada, defending themselves against the Gubmint.

Yes, you should be submissive when the federal government tries to take your stuff. They know best.

Good point. He likely thought he was an IRS agent.

  10. For you guys who want to bang on football for having “so many” issues, here are some numbers (and this doesn’t account for the fact that other college sports aren’t as interesting to the media as college football): NBA teams have a 15 player roster, times 30 teams = 450 players; Hockey – 23 players X 30 teams= 690 players; ML Baseball – 25 players X 30 teams = 750 players; NFL – 53 players X 32 teams = 1,696 players. I don’t have the energy to pull the college numbers, but they’re likely even more lopsided than the pros. It would be like the owner of a dodge minivan bragging that not as many minivans are stolen as Toyota Camrys.

NHL- Because no one cares what happens in Canada

MLB – No one cares what happens in Cuba, Mexico or Puerto Rico

I guess your cool with NHL fans trying to burn down Vancouver a few years ago? Because the players were not involved.

MLB has more arrests than the NBA.. which shares the talent pool of the NFL. Take out weed arrests (which will be legal in a few years) from profiled car stops, and the NBA would have the same handful of players arrested as the NHL.

Rolando McClain retired from the NFL at 23 because he said the on-field violence was going to compel him to kill someone off the field. Like others said, I think it all boils down to a combination of years of head injuries and steroid abuse/roid rage.

Technically, the practice squad players are on the roster (albeit inactive), too. That’s another 8 X 32.

NFL = 1,952 players. That adds even a little more proportion the convo.

Also, hundreds of their players return to Eastern Europe during the 4 to 5 month off-season. Who knows what type of debauchery they engage in over there, or if we’d even have access to those records.
