LaMichael James hints that he sees a trade coming

When news broke that the 49ers are shopping running back LaMichael James, it may have come as a surprise to some. But not to James.

Shortly after the reports surfaced of the 49ers trying to trade him, James hinted in a series of messages on Twitter that he saw it coming. His first tweet after the news broke was, “When old news become new news.” He then retweeted a series of tweets from fans saying that James would benefit from a fresh start.

So it sure sounds like James will spend 2014 somewhere other than San Francisco. That’s not a big surprise, as the 49ers gave James just 12 carries last year behind Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter, and this year they’re adding Marcus Lattimore to the mix.

The only question is where James will end up. Philadelphia is an obvious connection because Chip Kelly was James’s college coach at Oregon, but the Eagles don’t much need James, considering that they already have LeSean McCoy, Darren Sproles and Bryce Brown at running back.

Perhaps some team will like James enough as a return man to give up a late-round pick for him, but it’s also possible that the 49ers won’t be able to find anyone willing to give up anything for James.

This guy would be the perfect compliment to AP.

If he gets cut the Eagles should bring him in for competition.

I completely forgot about Lattimore. If he comes back healthy he’s a steal. Too bad a team I like couldn’t have picked him up.

  5. bbtaz97 says: Apr 17, 2014 12:03 PM

How about the Bears? We got rid of Michael Bush . He could be our returner and 3rd down back. I would give a low round pick for him if i were the Bears.

  6. FlashPatterson says: Apr 17, 2014 12:05 PM

I’m so jealous of the 49ers stock of running backs. Lattimore was a flat out steal where they got him, heir to Gore for sure, and Kendall Hunter is a solid backup.

  7. robert831 says: Apr 17, 2014 12:09 PM

My Vikings have no one at all behind AP, with Toby the beast moving to JAX. Vikings will be drafting one in a late round for sure, but I wouldn’t mind trading a mid round pick for James. However we have too many needs to give up picks unless its a deal.

I could see him on the Browns complementing Tate.

    He’d be a nice one-two punch w/ Alfred Morris.

I really wanted him to pan out for us, but he just isn’t a good fit. He was a luxury pick for a coaching staff that wants jack-of-all-trades kind of players. Hopefully he gets a chance to go to a more wide-open offense that will allow him to use his ability in space.

  15. number1hawkfan says: Apr 17, 2014 12:38 PM

He’s just happy to be leaving that sinking ship.

  16. ranger764 says: Apr 17, 2014 12:39 PM

Denver could us a back like James. Hillman isn’t cutting it and they need to get a speed back to offset Monte Ball. Plus they could use a return man too since they won’t be bringing back Holliday either.

  17. jayniner says: Apr 17, 2014 12:39 PM

    Too much quality RB depth?

This is a good problem to have considering our “off-field” issues at the moment.

  18. explosionsauce says: Apr 17, 2014 12:40 PM

Wasted 2nd rounder in a bad draft for the niners

  19. tennesseeoilers says: Apr 17, 2014 12:47 PM

Marcus Lattimore is going to be the most impactful back the 49ers have had since the early ’90s … Think Alfred Morris on steroids (only not literally).

  20. burndownhottopic says: Apr 17, 2014 12:48 PM

You’re all missing the obvious pipeline from San Fran to Baltimore. Ravens need a back and making this trade would open up the middle rounds of the draft for the Ravens.

  21. aceakking says: Apr 17, 2014 12:50 PM

RBs are overrated. Anyone can be a RB if the OL is good.

  23. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Apr 17, 2014 12:59 PM

He had his chance to crack the starting lineup in practice for two years. Then last year, had his chance to stamp himself as the punt return man. Coughed it up too many times.

    Happy trails wee man!

  24. Celebrity Man Guy says: Apr 17, 2014 12:59 PM

Last year he had 14 touches and two fumbles. As a second-round pick, he would have gotten more run for the 49ers if he were any good. Some guys are good in college but just aren’t cut out for the pros.

  25. raiderrob21 says: Apr 17, 2014 1:00 PM

Did any of you annointing him the second coming of Christ watch him at all while he was in SF? When he wasnt injured, he did nothing! Hes too small and was a good college RB and a subpar NFL back. A wasted 2nd rd pick by the 49er front office.

  26. shadylamp says: Apr 17, 2014 1:16 PM

This guy is a beast. Even with limited carries, he averaged 4.9 yards per carry. The 2 fumbles could be fluke or even if not, can be fixed. AP had fumble issues as well that got fixed. You put him in the backfield with Tate on the Browns and it will be like the Byner, Mack era with 2 1,000 yard rushers in the same year. The 49ers just suck at utilizing players. In the Tampa Bay game, he had 2 carries for 22 yards and then they never gave him the ball again. Seriously??

  27. rabidbillsfan says: Apr 17, 2014 1:17 PM

Buffalo, please. They tried for CJ2K, he’s a cheaper option.

  28. sameer1138 says: Apr 17, 2014 1:17 PM

SF should trade him for a pass rusher, since Aldon may be out a while.

  29. mnjoemama says: Apr 17, 2014 1:27 PM

Vikings !!!! Perfect 3rd down back

  31. natepalmer1 says: Apr 17, 2014 1:29 PM

Since losing Golden Tate Seattle could use a good return guy…

  32. wimpyburgers says: Apr 17, 2014 1:34 PM

I question if James really was – as ‘they’ like to say – a luxury pick for the 49ers.

Frank Gore was not nearly as explosive last year. Except for his one late breakaway run against bad Seahawks coverage, the 49ers would have lost that game at home. Otherwise, Seattle Gore all year.

I’ll be surprised if Gore is ever again the leading 49er rusher. If he is, “It’s Groundhogs Day” in the playoffs.

  33. sundevilalum03 says: Apr 17, 2014 1:42 PM

He has some quickness but he is really small and lacks power, vision and ball securtity. He doesnt pass protect at all and really doesnt catch it out of the backfield well. He tip toes when he runs like he is scared to get hit..The niners are a team that CANNOT have backs that fumble, they play conservative on offense and win on defense and specials. He is a bad fit for us..if we get a 5th or 6th I would be happy..

  34. domezo says: Apr 17, 2014 1:46 PM

come to the vikings we need a solid back up behind future HOFer ALL DAY!!!

  35. djalakas25 says: Apr 17, 2014 1:48 PM

Golden tate…… Ummm Percy harvin? Lol

  36. th56 says: Apr 17, 2014 1:50 PM

Never could figure out why SF even drafted this guy. They really never gave him much of a chance to do anything. I’d like to see the Vikings give him a try, but only for a 5th or 6th rounder max. The way running backs go, I can’t imaging anyone offering more.

  37. 6ball says: Apr 17, 2014 1:54 PM

Frank Gore is like a car with 100k miles on it. He’s prone to go into the shop at any time.

  38. mckaymatt says: Apr 17, 2014 1:56 PM

doubt anyone is giving up a pass rusher for a RB.

  39. goldrush36 says: Apr 17, 2014 2:01 PM

LOL at all the guys saying he is a beast. The reason his avg was higher is because he got touches against terrible teams and got long gains. All his others were stuffed at the goal line or he fumbled. He has speed and can be better utilized elsewhere but you are absolutely crazy to think he is a 1000 yd back. Not to mention instead of you know actually honing his craft he whines about being the 4th best rb on the team.

  40. pioniere says: Apr 17, 2014 2:03 PM

Nice insurance for Buffalo, as Jackson is nearing the end of his career, and Spiller could opt out of the final year of his contract.

  41. disp2 says: Apr 17, 2014 2:05 PM

I’ve never seen a player with ball security issues as bad as James. Constantly gets the ball stripped out his hands or just knocked out when he got hit. For a player wanting more playing time you’d think he would focus more on being reliable with the ball in his hands. Even before Lattimore was on the team James was basically just an injury insurance policy since Hunter is a better back in every aspect.

  42. politicallyincorrect says: Apr 17, 2014 2:25 PM

why would anyone trade for LMJ

    not an NFL player

did not like at Oregon, do not like now

  43. rainmaker1982 says: Apr 17, 2014 2:35 PM

There is no such thing as a “Luxury” pick as people are saying on here. Every team has a weakness and in the 9ers case, taking the “best available player” actually hurt the 9ers.

They still are weak at CB and could use some depth a S.

  44. rainmaker1982 says: Apr 17, 2014 2:41 PM

I also wanted to add that the 9ers biggest weakness with the run game is short yardage situations.

Frank Gore is very slippery, has amazing vision, but he’s not going to run people over.

Brandon Jacobs was supposed to solve that issue, but it didn’t work out.

Lattimore should finally be that compliment the 9ers have been waiting for.

Already having Hunter on the team made LaMichael James a pointless draft pick.

  45. sportnorcal says: Apr 17, 2014 2:44 PM

    I wish him luck.
Also wish he didn’t complain so much and act entitled to a spot when he should be earning his playing time instead.

  46. goldrush36 says: Apr 17, 2014 2:46 PM

Meant stuffed at the line of scrimmage but the point was the same….. No gain. Anyway wish him luck but he is avg even as a returner and that is his best ability.

  47. rg3sus says: Apr 17, 2014 2:49 PM

To those who said James for Pryor as a trade with Oakland I first laughed because of all the Pryor jokes of late. Then I thought about it and it works. Oakland can use James. SF can use a solid backup and just maybe Harbaugh can finally get Pryor to the next level.

  48. booboothekid says: Apr 17, 2014 2:49 PM

Green Bay…have him become Sproles 2.0. That would make our offense legendary

  49. raidermike34 says: Apr 17, 2014 3:15 PM

trade him to Oaktown for Terrelle Pryor!! Win Win ..

  50. noffy32 says: Apr 17, 2014 3:18 PM

Gore is on his last legs and they never utilized James’ backfield catching:running experience (sproles like if you will). He could be very good in the right offense.

  51. rohlo says: Apr 17, 2014 3:33 PM

san diego was really high on him in draft and wanted him..they also need return help as well! also houston is a strong possibility with arian foster beign the only rb they have and the rest are udfa’s of recent years on their houston is his hometown and obrien might be trying to get that 2 dimensional typed runnign back for his offense. i say san diego or houston!!!!!

Sinking ship? I hope you’re very disappointed when the damn thing floats like a Boston Whaler.

  54. aldante66 says: Apr 17, 2014 4:04 PM

He must either read the same papers we do saying he is toast or his agent called to tell him so.
He’ll find a home. Problem is running backs are seconds thoughts on teams now. If your going to have one have a great one or else someone who can fill in when the QB’s arm is sore.

  55. dkrause71 says: Apr 17, 2014 4:17 PM

You guys saying Sproles 2.0 clearly have not watch James, or you haven’t watch Sproles because outside being smallish, they play nothing like each other.

James is very fast, but its more of a straight line speed, not alot of wriggle to his game. He doesn’t receive all that well either.

This love for James really is the classic big name college player getting the benefit with the fans. Just like how Vince Young, Colt McCoy excited many of you well past proving to be useless at the NFL level.

  56. nyjsec314 says: Apr 17, 2014 4:30 PM

Guy with 200 career rushing yards being used for trade bait is when you know the well has dried up.

  57. hmpennypacker says: Apr 17, 2014 4:42 PM

This is sad. I’d hoped he’d stick with us but feel he’s been under used due to a crowded & talented back field which is sad. Who ever gets him is getting a talented player.

  58. fantom21 says: Apr 17, 2014 5:13 PM

To the guys saying Lattimorre is a steal, please tell me how? He was drafted in the 4th round and hasn’t played a single snap in the NFL yet. You can find a lot of quality players in the 4th. I get that he was a stud running back in college but it’s a little early to claim that he was a steal when we haven’t even seen him play yet. And think how much better the niners would be if they actually picked a wr and rb that actually worked for them. Jenkins and James?? they reached and it didn’t work out.

  59. koolrepetoire says: Apr 17, 2014 5:27 PM

Redskins. They were bidding with Philly for Sproles. Younger, faster version in James. He should be able to beat out Chris Thompson. I’d give a 4th rounder for him.

  60. bassplucker says: Apr 17, 2014 7:58 PM

Trade?! Methinks hw values himself higher than he ought. Anyone who wants him will just wait for him to be cut. He’s not that special.

  61. skins1970 says: Apr 17, 2014 9:12 PM

I would like him for the Skins maybe we can give the 49ers a 5th or 6th round pick he hasn’t done anything to warrant giving anything higher then that for him.

  62. Awol.West says: Apr 17, 2014 9:21 PM

Chris Polk surpassed Bryce Brown in the second half of the season by the way. They’re loaded in the backfield and Chip is one of those coaches that wants to stack up at every position.

  63. derekz1987 says: Apr 17, 2014 9:45 PM

Patriots! No big man Blount anymore. James and Boyce could provide a solid return game we haven’t had in a long time. Then we can cut Bolden, because James can be a 3rd down Woodhead type player for us. I’ve seen James in person when he was a Duck, and the guy is a football player. Never got his chances in Sf. Was a bad system for him, when you rely on a power running attack. Niners need help in the secondary, trade Arrington for him.

  64. wininer says: Apr 17, 2014 10:16 PM

James is a soft whiner. He thinks he’s better than he is and rather than earning time by perfecting his craft he whines on twitter about his lack of playing time. I’ll be surprised if the Niners get anything for James

Haters keep hating, the Niners still gonna be there deep into the playoffs.

  65. NakedCowboy! says: Apr 18, 2014 4:02 AM

9ers did great job for planning life without gore.. like 4 years ago… old man strength!

  66. ronfai says: Apr 21, 2014 1:56 PM

James sux. Good riddance. He can’t run anything outside of the option read because he’s too stupid to understand a playbook and he can’t pass protect for poop. On top of all that he whines and moans all the time – bleh , I’d hope Niners get at least a 5th/6th – otherwise just cut him.
