Ravens exercise 2015 option on Jimmy Smith

The Ravens have indeed exercised their right to keep cornerback Jimmy Smith under contract through 2015.

According to Field Yates of, the Ravens have picked up the fifth-year option on Smith, their 2011 first-round pick. Smith is now slated to make $6.898 million in 2015, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.

In March, Ravens coach John Harbaugh indicated the team would be picking up Smith’s option.

The 25-year-old Smith started all 16 games for Baltimore in 2013, defending 15 passes, recording two interceptions and notching 58 tackles. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Smith has ideal size for the position and seems likely to sign a lucrative multi-year contract at some point, given his skill and the demand for cornerbacks.

The Ravens took Smith 27th overall in 2011. They held the No. 26 pick, but time ran out on the pick after a trade with the Bears fell through. (Then-Bears G.M. Jerry Angelo took responsibility for the mishap.) The Chiefs, who had the 27th pick, took receiver Jonathan Baldwin at No. 26.

    Great season Jimmy!

The Bears took Carimi(traded to the Bucs, then cut from the team, now with the Falcons) and the Chiefs too Baldwin (now with the 49ers, riding the bench).
Smith hasn’t been a world-beater, but he made 2 of the biggest plays in their SB win. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good when it comes to drafting.

Turning into one of the better corners in the nfl.

I hope this is true, and so does A Brown, Moore, Wheaton, DHB…, but I doubt it is, as the ravens don’t exercise in the offseason.

They need to lock this kid up long term along with Torrey. He keeps evolvimg and improving his game year after year.

Sign this dude max! He contained both Megatron & AJ Green last season.

We win Superbowls. What do you do?

Yeah, that was a shady classless move Mr. Angelo… But I ain’t mad at ya. This kid ended up being an awesome pick. He was able to stay healthy last season and successfully step into the starting corner roll last season (after Carey Williams departure to Philly) and play really well (even shutting down Megatron!) He will only get better this season. Now watch Ozzie draft another awesome Safety and see this defense go to work!

DeCastro is forcing Ngata into retirement. He’s tired of getting stunted and pushed out of the way.

I would be more worried about DeCastro forcing Pouncey into retirement. It’s bad enough to miss again and again with OL picks, but having one of your busts take out your only stud lineman has to hurt.

typical jbsteeler comment. the article is about shut down corner jimmy smith. not bust draft pick david decastro. anyways, good move by the ravens. step one on locking down jimmy and torrey.
