Newton in a boot, still recovering from ankle surgery

Newton AP

It’s been a month since the surprise announcement that Panthers quarterback Cam Newton needs ankle surgery.  So how’s he doing four-plus weeks after having the procedure?

Darin Gantt of PFT, who covered the Panthers 14 years before joining this establishment nearly two years ago, reported during Friday night’s edition of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN that Newton remains in a boot — and that the team remains hopeful Newton will be back to 100 percent in time for training camp.

Of course, Newton may still miss all of the practice reps of the offseason program, which becomes more critical as the Panthers break in a bunch of new receivers.

The next time we hear Newton’s name inevitably will be when the Panthers exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, which will pay him $13 million for 2015.  It’s only a matter of time before the Panthers pay him a lot more than that.

He’s not much good on one ankle so better go slow if you have to heal it correctly. With out Cam their season is over.

Question: Is there a more overrated QB in the NFL? I mean, besides Kapernick.

    A: No, none besides Kapernick.

Big mistake if they pick up that option..but i get it if they do.

no qb is worth 1mil let alone 20 mil. but the market is what the market is on qb’s, and it will only continue to go up. you think miguel cabrera is worth 30mil per year? the market dictates what your going to make.

Just don’t pull an RG3 with him whatever you do.

Still in a boot. His ankle is only 119% healthy.

Looks like the Panthers are in for a stellar season…maybe the defense is going to score all the points

Cam will be fine. Just find a way to protect him, buy more time in the pocket, and to open up running lanes for the RBs by improving the O-Line. We can equal or better 10 receptions per game with a better line. WR positions will be ok if we draft rookies with size and hands

  10. corkspop says: Apr 19, 2014 12:47 AM

Will be a great QB for the next 7 – 8 years.

Is Cam Newton good? I still have no clue. He’s an effective scramble who has had some early success with fourth-quarter comebacks. But he’s had a lot of awful games, especially in games that “count.” So really, is this the guy the Panthers should pay?

  12. wishingtonredslur says: Apr 19, 2014 1:38 AM

How much are they going to pay a guy with one winning season and zero playoff victories? 120 million?

  13. doe22us says: Apr 19, 2014 2:52 AM

Are people still hating on Cam lol, kid is good,, he has grown up since his rookie yr, from a maturity standpoint. His game is tight.

  14. bbbmf says: Apr 19, 2014 3:28 AM

He should stay in the boot until the management signs some quality WRs (not just a collection of ‘good guys’ and mediocre possession receivers).

That he is still in the boot four weeks after surgical intervention is not surprising to me. What I find surprising is the amount of time that the team waited after Cam’s season ended before putting him under the knife. One has to wonder, with OTA’s just around the corner and having some idea as to how long it takes for foot surgery to heal, why the procedure wasn’t done in January.

Not good for a “QB” that can’t pass and needs to run.

  17. panthro79 says: Apr 19, 2014 7:36 AM

He has had issues with that ankle since college. Imagine what he could have done with two good ankles. …oh wait he had the best first 3 year stretch in NFL history

Those that insult him wish he was on their team

  18. panthro79 says: Apr 19, 2014 7:38 AM

Its ironic that someone with Stafford in their would even talk about QB deals… unless they realize how overrated he is

  19. crazylayupman says: Apr 19, 2014 7:52 AM

So much irrational hate for a guy who has improved every year, went 12-4 last season, and has done it with a group of receivers so mediocre the team DIDN’T RESIGN ANY OF THEM.

You guys are out of your minds if you think he’s a bust. All he’s done is break records and take a garbage team to the NFC Championship with one of the worst WR tandems in the league. He has a RB on the wrong side of 30 and a good TE… that’s it. One of the most exciting players in the league who’s only getting better. He’ll be a Panther for the next 5-7 years, minimum.

i think your confusing kaepernick to newton. newton has never won a playoff game let alone get to the nfc championship game.

  22. politicallyincorrect says: Apr 19, 2014 10:20 AM

I think Cam is at most a game manager… I do not think he has skills or potential to develop skills to ever be a top or legit starting NFL QB

only real asset is size.. lags all the other young QBs in almost every other area and just not a good guy to play with

Panthers in a jam here… he has been promoted and dumping him may come at a cost.. but he is not good enough long term… oh my..

  23. qdog112 says: Apr 19, 2014 10:54 AM

Cam has said he won’t hold out, but that was then. That was when the team was on the rise. Now the state of the Panthers is headed downward, with GM, WRs, OL and secondary issues looming.

Cam’s political move to show loyalty, will be vetoed by his agent and family, if Gettleman tries to do what I expect him to do, which is LOW BALL Cam. I expect Gettleman to have a poor record of 8-8 (or worse) to work against Rivera and Cam, this year.

Cam is not Gettleman’s QB and Rivera is not his coach. I suspect Gettleman wants his own guys in there at the expense of team success.

Meanwhile, Nate is,”just loosening up ” his arm.

  24. pilot2011 says: Apr 19, 2014 11:20 AM

So Cam is in a boot right now down in Auburn finishing his degree this semester; not getting DUI’s or roofing Miami chicks… Yet somehow he still gets hated on more than anyone by slappies that have nothing better to do.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr. Newton is in the mvp conversation this year.

  25. mviglianco says: Apr 19, 2014 12:23 PM

For people who spend all day talking smack on an NFL rumor site its surprising how many don’t seem to actually watch the games. Van he inprove? Of course, but to suggest he is a bust and can only scramble only speaks of your ignorance.

Nothing about his progress after surgery is noteworthy at this point. Its on schedule.

  27. politicallyincorrect says: Apr 19, 2014 12:30 PM

Cam does have potential to be a top 20ish QB…

  28. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Apr 19, 2014 2:02 PM

Take your time Cam. Don’t have any receivers to throw to yet anyway…

  29. stevekilla420 says: Apr 19, 2014 6:02 PM

Cam is a good qb with potential to be great with wr smith gone cam can now take control of the locker room n team which will grow his confidence. Now that being said this is a fragile situation n it all hangs on cams confidence which wont grow if he doesnt have the weapons to succeed. If they start losing he will take a step back so they imo need to double dip wrs in rds 1-3 take 2 wrs that are big n fast wit good hands n they should be ok only prob is they pick late so they gonna have to be really saavy come draft day.

  30. stevekilla420 says: Apr 19, 2014 6:05 PM

Oh n Cam has already proven he isnt a bust so haters please stop n just for the record im not a cam or panthers fan its just a fact

  31. stevekilla420 says: Apr 19, 2014 6:06 PM

Oh and 1 last thing GO BUCS!!!! HAAHAAAHAAAA!!!!

  32. jgedgar70 says: Apr 21, 2014 5:52 PM

I see the irrational hatred of Cam Newton continues. With Cam as QB, the Panthers win total has increased every year, and he has made 2 Pro Bowls, all while never having a true #1 receiver, but having a bum ankle.

There is nothing about his game that spells bust, sucks or “game manager.” He’s an elite QB who will win multiple Super Bowls once he has a complete offense around him.

As for him still being in a boot, no big surprise. And I think he had surgery only after trying to let it get better on its own, as he has done the past 5 years, and when it didn’t, the team had had enough and scheduled the surgery.

He will be fine. As will the team if we get a #1 WR and o-line depth in the draft.
