Colts center Phil Costa retires at age 26

Phil Costa, a center who signed with the Colts as a free agent last month, has surprisingly decided to retire.

The Colts announced today that the 26-year-old Costa, who previously spent four years with the Cowboys, is calling it a career.

“Phil feels it’s in his best interest to retire from the game,” Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson said in a statement. “We certainly understand and wish him nothing but the best.”

The Colts may understand, but it’s a difficult decision to understand from the outside: There had been no indications that Costa was having any physical problems that would prevent him from playing many more years in the NFL. Costa did have a high-profile broken engagement to reality TV star Brooke Hogan, daughter of Hulk Hogan, but there were no indications that any issues in his personal life would keep him off the field, either.

So this is a surprising story. Perhaps Costa will clear things up in the future, but so far he has said nothing.

With the lackluster performance of the Cowboys’ O-Line the last 3-4 years, Colts fans may find this to be a blessing in disguise. And that’s coming from a lifelong Cowboys’ fan.

Its odd that he signed just last month and decided to call it quits. What happened in the last month? Why did he commit to the contract and a month later retire? Anything can happen in the NFL. Who knows what goes on behind the closed doors..

It’s important to be happy in whatever you do, but that’s a nice salary he’s giving up.

It’s part of the story line, he will come back hit some guy with a steel chair and the crowd is going to go crazy

The surprising thing is that more people don’t retire before the meatgrinder that is the NFL takes it’s toll. If I had a son that was a football player I would tell him to bank a couple million and get out as soon as possible.

He actually did have a pretty significant back injury in 2012 that he was rumored to never have truly recovered from.

  19. landroo says: Apr 21, 2014 4:58 PM

He had serious back problems in big D and I wonder if they’ve returned and it’s chronic/structural?

These guys sacrifice their bodies (albeit at high salaries), but at what price? Most are rode hard and put away wet before turning 30.

Make a few mil, invest wisely and get out before your health is permanently compromised.

26 is pretty old for a center. guys knees are probably goin. artificial turf since he was 12 does its damage. Maybe we should start making pee wee football start playing on artificial turf, you know for the quality of the game.

  22. xli2006 says: Apr 21, 2014 5:12 PM

Please tell me the Colts didn’t have to a pay a dime.

There is definitely something more to the story here.

Tony Room is heartbroken that Andrew Luck won’t get to have the fun of watching the snap go over his head and having to chase it down while 300 pound angry guys are in hot pursuit.

  24. afcdomination says: Apr 21, 2014 5:16 PM

oh come on, what you are, 10? 26 is not old for a center. it is not old for any position on the field in the NFL

  25. puppybowler says: Apr 21, 2014 5:21 PM

Now he and Rolando McClain can go backpacking through Europe

  26. Pittsburgh Steelers says: Apr 21, 2014 5:22 PM

Notice how the Steelers didn’t draft him. We’ve never made a mistake.

  29. 92nick182govikings says: Apr 21, 2014 5:41 PM

Thing is he could have been the backup for the colts and made his money and then retire. Maybe he realized he was gonna end up being the stater and said f that and quit haha.

  30. 92nick182govikings says: Apr 21, 2014 5:45 PM

Haha 26 old in the nfl? You got to be kidding me! Some people start at 23 or 24 in the nfl.

  31. schmitty2 says: Apr 21, 2014 5:57 PM

Will this lead to us seeing the birth of “Costamania”?

  32. richardmswartz says: Apr 21, 2014 6:06 PM

Based solely on the Colts statement, it seems like the guy has a health problem, football related or otherwise. Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

  33. vikingsvoice says: Apr 21, 2014 6:08 PM

“A 26 year old kid did have a broken engagement on national tv, simultaneously losing the love of his life as well as being humiliated for all to see, but no biggie”…

    He’s probably depressed.

    It’s only a difficult decision to understand if you’re a short-sighted moron.

  35. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Apr 21, 2014 6:11 PM

I doubt he would have made the Colts final roster. Maybe a career in pro wrestling is in his future. That father in law can hook him up!

  36. r8dernation says: Apr 21, 2014 6:13 PM

He didn’t like what Luck was doing with his hands back there.

  37. bengalskuta82 says: Apr 21, 2014 6:16 PM

Good for him. This game is too dangerous. Heck, he made a few dollars already so that should be enough.

  38. thefiesty1 says: Apr 21, 2014 6:21 PM

He just didn’t want Luck touching his butt.

  39. footballtalk1 says: Apr 21, 2014 6:22 PM

  42. metalhead65 says: Apr 21, 2014 7:32 PM

he does not owe anybody an explanation. maybe he he was one of the young players who did not blow all his money and decided he wanted to enjoy the rest of his life now while he was still young and in good enough health to. if I had a million bucks I would never work another day in my life.

  43. nickinneohio says: Apr 21, 2014 8:01 PM

Costa didn’t want to take the blame for T Rich’s 3.4 yards. per carry!

  44. ubepunkedagain says: Apr 21, 2014 8:38 PM

Realty set in when he spent some time in Indiana. Probably stir crazy.

  45. winstonjed44 says: Apr 21, 2014 8:46 PM

Hopefully they are planning on drafting a center, because the interior of the Colts offensive line was atrocious last season. Thankfully Donald Thomas should be back healthy at guard, but that still leaves Satele. Luck can’t have a guy in his face just after he gets the ball.

  46. the8man says: Apr 21, 2014 8:51 PM

How does anyone retire at 26? He’s leaving the NFL.

  47. gadgetking2010 says: Apr 21, 2014 9:43 PM
