Keyshawn Johnson arrested on domestic violence charge

Former NFL player and current ESPN analyst Keyshawn Johnson has been arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies went to Johnson’s home at 12:48 a.m. today after getting a call about a possible spousal assault.

“When deputies arrived, it was determined that the resident and his ex-girlfriend were involved in a domestic dispute,” the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department told CBS Los Angeles.

Johnson was booked and released on $20,000 bail. CBS Los Angeles reports that Johnson is charged with misdemeanor spousal battery, while TMZ reports that Johnson is charged with misdemeanor domestic battery. TMZ’s report says Johnson smashed his ex-girlfriend’s phone, causing a gash to her hand.

Asked for comment, an ESPN spokesman told PFT, “We are aware and are looking into it.”

  42. mybrunoblog says: Apr 21, 2014 2:00 PM

I’m not going to defend Johnson but know this. Most states have a zero tolerance for any victim of domestic crime that involves injury. That is to say if Johnson and his Girlfriend were arguing over a phone, he grabs the phone, breaks it and in doing so scratches or cuts her hand. Boom. He is arrested and charged with assault. The Police are required to do this. They have no discretion. If this happened between two persons not connected by some domestic situation (marriage, dating, cohabitation) this would have resulted in a short police report and no arrest.
I’m merely pointing out that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

  43. whyamiacowboysfanagain says: Apr 21, 2014 2:02 PM

Nothing against Keyshawn, but I never saw what made him an authority of the NFL in the first place. The guy was an average speed, body catching WR, at best. He was more famous for hating on an equally overrated WR in NY and for destroying the Bucs locker room to such a degree that when they told him to go home… the Bucs gelled and won a SB! How do they day… Karma is a beotch!

  54. oldcracker says: Apr 21, 2014 2:23 PM

I grew up in a family with domestic violence. There is nothing funny about it, especially when children are involved. Having a loud verbal disagreement is bad enough but, when it turns to physical agression it is plain wrong. Kids take this personally and they take it hard.

Swallow your pride and just walk away from it. It does not make you any less of a man.

I know athletes and other celebrities get a lot of press over their actions but, domestic violence is a real problem in America. As a retired Army vet (senior NCO & WO) with responsibility, at times, over a thousand + men and women, a big part of my time involved dealing with this issue. The Army was very good in providing consuling, help and support for families in a myriad of issues. I don’t see much coming out of the NFL, other than lip service.

Any two people will eventually have a disagreement on something. It doesn’t have to lead to violence though.

  55. annes22 says: Apr 21, 2014 2:25 PM

Sigh, one would hope by the time people reach their 30s (at the oldest) that they don’t get into screaming matches with EX girlfriends/boyfriends to that extent. I just don’t get that. At all. When there are no kids involved, etc, just go your separate ways. Why prolong the drama by continuing to speak to each other at all? If your split was that bitter, there is nothing good that will come of staying in each others’ lives.

…One that can’t or won’t do his homework so we’re stuck with his pedestrian ideas that are flat out wrong.

…Two, a guy that hits his wife in a fit of anger.

…Three a retired coach that has seen the game pass him up so fast he still thinks we’re in leather helmets.

…Thank God for Chris Burmin…the glue that holds a pedestrian group of anaylsts together. Were it not for Chris they would be walking their asses to the super bowl. Oh wait…nvm.

Well, whatever that situation is about….sounds like he broke her phone, probably from taking it and slamming it to the ground/wall, and she cut herself picking it up.

Ok, he lost his cool and broke a phone….

So let’s reminisce: What are some of the things Johnson said about Incognito? Martin? Dez? Freeman? Should we [and all media outlets not named “Mothership”] blast Johnson in the same fashion prior to ‘hearing the details’ the same way that he and his cohorts did? It’d only be fair but…

  86. pedronorte says: Apr 21, 2014 4:29 PM

I’ve never been a big Keyshawn fan, but just to play devil’s advocate, isn’t everyone presumed innocent before proven otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt?

The guy’s getting crucified over a supposedly heated argument with his ex-girlfriend, her broken cell-phone and some sort of cut on her hand.

There’s definitely no smoking gun like the Ray Rice Fiancé Elevator Punch-Out casino surveillance video, so theoretically shouldn’t we put our personal opinions of Johnson aside before passing judgement on the guy?

    Just a thought…

He’s always been an angry guy with a chip on his shoulder who can seem to zip his lip when it can save him some trouble. He deserves this. I hope he’s prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Maybe ESPN will wise up and do the right thing and fire him. Based on the postings Ive read here, most people dont seem to care for his analysis anyways.
