Walter Thurmond: We can be the best secondary in the league

Byron Maxwell, Walter Thurmond AP

Cornerback Walter Thurmond spent last season with the Seahawks and was part of a secondary that many considered to be the best in football.

Thurmond has taken his talents to East Rutherford, New Jersey, but he thinks there’s still a chance to be part of the league’s top group of defensive backs. Thurmond met the media on Tuesday and showed that a bit of Richard Sherman has rubbed off on him by calling himself the league’s best slot corner. Putting that corner with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Antrel Rolle, Prince Amukamara and others leaves Thurmond shooting for the moon.

“We have the potential to be the best secondary in the league,” Thurmond said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

That secondary looks like it will take a hit with safety Will Hill facing the third suspension of his brief NFL career, one that Vacchiano reports will end his time with the Giants whether or not his appeal is successful. Hill’s absence may not hurt all that much, although it must be noted that a powerful pass rush helped the Seahawks defensive backs immensely last season and that the Giants failed to produce one on their way to a 7-9 record.

They’ll hope a healthy Jason Pierre-Paul recovers the form he’s been missing the last two years to spur that pass rush and put a talented back end in position to make Thurmond look prescient and bring the Giants back to the playoffs in 2014.

First you have to put down the bong Walter….

    Go Hawks

Good to see Walter hasn’t quit smoking weed.

No you can’t. That title belongs to Denver

What title belongs to Denver? Best secondary?

Eli will lead the league in picks….again.

    Walter,

    Stop saying dumb things.

Saints will have the best defense in the league this year…expect much from NO this year!

Big year coming from Big Blue.

Walter stepped up nicely when needed last season. Helped get Hawks to the SB. However, he was exposed somewhat in the SB. Seemed every successful pass play had Thrumond trailing after the WR. Hopefully, his injury problems are behind him and he goes on to have a good career.

I think you are because Peyton Manning is not ready to admit yet.

  12. braceyourselffor12 says: Apr 22, 2014 3:27 PM

The Seahacks entire defense was predicated on holding, PI and cheap shots. Thurmond might be surprised that Coughlin doesn’t put up with that.

I don’t know about the best, but they should have a top 5 unit in the league, even if will hill is gone.

They will need to be with Eli throwing all thise pics the D will be on the field 75% of the game.

The Seahawks secondary might be “the best in football?”

Try the best of all time.

  16. greymares says: Apr 22, 2014 3:47 PM

this secondary better be adept at knocking down passes because there’s nobody there that will make a tackle.

  17. tombstone7 says: Apr 22, 2014 3:47 PM

Thurmond may be right….he was part of secondary that was the best in the PAC-10 during his times at Oregon. I personally watched him as a freshmen making 14 tackels against Arizona.

    Walter Thurmond III
    Jarius Bryd
    Patrick Chueng
    T.J. Ward

    No need to say anymore!

He’s not even the best slot corner in his division…

Brandon Boykin is and it’s not close.

Idiocy. DRC is a joke. He needs proper coaching and scheme to maximize his talents. Giants coaching has left a lot to be desired on defense, specifically in the back 7. With a proper scheme and talent around him DRC has the natural ability to do well, but the guy has a ten cent head. And no team should ever consider him a #1 CB. Amakamura is their best CB. Thurmond is a solid role player. He cashed in after stepping up to fill a void in an outstanding scheme surrounded by elite talent. Bottom line is the GMen paid top of the market prices for mediocre at best talent with both DRC and Thurmond. But at least Thurmond will be utilized properly as a nickelback/rotational DB. I have faith he will not be a weak link for them. But DRC is a bust waiting to happen. I couldn’t believe how much they paid for that bum. But they needed some scapegoats for last season and they purged 20+ players and replaced them with free agents, essentially paying FA dollars for other peoples discarded trash. But nobody wants to tak about the biggest issues on the field. Eli’s horrible production and decision making. Instead they blamed the OL, WRs, TE, RBs, fired their coaches….basically blamed EVERYONE else and ignored the actual problem.

    Bravo morons. BRAVO.

The confidence is great, but, he and his teammates will need to do the talking on the field for anyone to believe him.

  21. dwats says: Apr 22, 2014 4:08 PM

You’re not even the best secondary in your own division.

  22. dickshotdogs says: Apr 22, 2014 4:10 PM

    Nope, New England is.

  23. tjacks7 says: Apr 22, 2014 4:13 PM

Pro Football Focus says Nate Allen, Chris Crocker, William Gay, Leon Hall, Kyle Wilson were the top 5 nickel corners last year, Walter.

  24. justinstuckrule says: Apr 22, 2014 4:26 PM

There was a time when my Giants had a good defense but those days are sadly long past.

Too bad we never got Ronde Barber to come to the Giants along with his brother Tiki.

Did I just read a Raider fan talking smack about our QB situation?

    walter, just say no

  27. nastynahz says: Apr 23, 2014 10:13 AM

Amukamura is a top 10 ten corner..aggressive and physical. .DRC is a good cover corner. ..also top 10…long reach good recovery……rolle is s top 5 safty…all that before u add the slot corner that just had a great season and won the superbowl…thats the blueprint for the best secondary in the league

Been Giants fan for over 50 years.
All the talk & self promotion tells allot
about player before he even gets on the field,
so ridiculous – as if – they get paid by the “Word” in their contracts ?
All new faces , no way predict this season.
    Could be 5-11 or 11-5
    All fans start season hopeful.
Giants – were so bad last year , we should been
3-13 not for 4 games we played against backup QB’s that were ‘pathetic”…Josh Freeman was the worst of the group , irony G-men then signing him.
Reece must really be on hot seat , be so aggressive in off season & Mara’s comments about offense being broken.
Draft be interesting, hopefully we get several players that can contribute right away for a change.
On paper Giants look better , who knows whether it all jells – or falls apart.
    So many unknowns.
