Robert Griffin III to drive pace car at NASCAR event

AP

Robert Griffin III couldn’t steer his team out of a skid last year. Hopefully, Saturday night goes more smoothly.

According to Bob Pockrass of the Sporting News, the Redskins quarterback will serve as an honorary pace-car driver for Saturday’s NASCAR race in Richmond.

The Redskins-NASCAR link is strong, with former coach Joe Gibbs one of the top team owners in stock car racing.

But it was a new-school tie that got RG3 a seat behind the wheel of the pace car.

NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr., a Redskins fan, invited him to the track via Twitter, and the two made the connection.

Now, all the racing fans waving their 3 flags might have a new favorite quarterback.

  1. Re: Griffin being all hype.

1st year — won rookie of the year…hype justified.

2nd year — coming off of serious injury so played subpar…subpar play due to injury.

This hardly sounds like a bust player who is 100% hype. Let’s see how he does in year 3 healthy once more. If he fails to produce this year, then folks can start talking about him being disappointing. But for now it’s honestly premature.

  2. Hey why worry about the new playbook and the coming season ?

After all you’ve got a pace car to drive, a logo to show off, no doubt many other non-football things that are more important to you.

Washington team headed towards another train wreck of a season.

  3. So much for RG3s quiet offseason working.

I sense no humble pie after last year and we have a new joke who strokes RG3s ego.

Where is Andrew luck right now ? Not partying with desean.

  4. unacceptable that Jr. is a Skins fan. Take after your fellow drivers and be a Panthers fan. You are from Charlotte North Carolina dude, this isn’t 1982. We’ve had a team for 20 years now.

  5. I thought this kind of honoring was reserved for, umm let’s say – Super Bowl Winning QB’s. Certainly not a self promoting, over hyped player with a losing record.

  6. I knew a few Seahawk fans that were disappointed when Seattle got Russell Wilson in the draft instead of Robert Griffin. Obviously they don’t feel that way anymore.

RGIII is actually the perfect example of why the Rookie of the Year award is such a laughable joke of a popularity contest. Russell Wilson sent him home in the playoffs, and went on to lead the Seahawks to a Superbowl win while RGIII choked it up in a 3-13 season, eventually getting benched.

    But yeah, he’s awesome. LOL

  7. There`s a lot of hate towards this kid. With that said this kid is primed for bouncing back successfully and there`s a pretty good chance he will. Then a lot of his haters and critics will have to eat loads of crow.Remember I told you so!

  8. I think RG3 is a bust … but Wilson might not be anything either if he didn’t have the #1 defense and the #1 special teams behind him.

  9. Jason Witten is doing the same thing – it just isn’t reported because it won’t get the hits. Mention RG3, haters come out of the woodwork.

The kid has been working since February – heaven forbid he takes 3 hours off on a SATURDAY in APRIL. Idiots.

  10. LOL at the RW lovers.

RW beat RGIII in the playoffs only because RGIII was hurt.

RGIII and the offense went through the “legion of boom” like a hot knife through butter – 2 drives 2 TD’s. Check the FACTS.

If the kid was healthy, he would have hung a 40 burger on Seattle, imo.

RW has done well, but he only throws the ball like 15 times per game. Every QB in the league would love to have 3rd down and 3 and a play-action pass with Lynch in the backfield.

Put RW on Washington with that horrible defense and he gets benched after game 3 of his Rookie season and no-one ever hears about him.

RGIII may be a cheeseball ofn note, but he can ball-out. Ask Demarcus Ware.

  11. At least RGIII isn’t getting caught doing shady stuff in a Miami hotel room, or saying he has a bomb at a airport, or knocking out his wife and dragging her around like she’s dead, or suspended for PEDs, or getting arrested for DUIs, or getting charged with assault. All you haters have at least one player who has done one of the above mentioned things on your favorite team. He’s a great role model and will have a great career. HTTR

  12. RG3 has been working on his QB drills since the season ended he is allwed to take a couple of hours off. I’m surprised people haven’t complained about him taking time off to eat food. I really can’t wait for him to shut up his haters.
