No holes in Vikings schedule, despite presence of Gophers

Making an NFL schedule is complicated enough, but with the Vikings in someone else’s building, it added a layer to the proceedings.

According to Master Tesfatsion of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the league had to work around a number of requests from the University of Minnesota while the Vikings are using TCF Bank Stadium.

The agreement between the Vikings and the school said that the Vikings could only have one weeknight game when class was in session (which they avoided by playing their Thursday night game on the road).

They also have to work preseason games around move-in week in August, and finals in December. The Vikings play at Detroit while Minnesota students are studying for finals.

The Vikings and Gophers will only have one shared weekend of home games, when the University plays Northwestern on Oct. 11 and the Vikings host the Lions the next day.  (So much purple in Minneapolis that weekend, even Prince will be confused.)

Perhaps most importantly, they were able to avoid conflicts with the Minnesota State Fair (Aug. 21-Sept. 1).

For the sake of the enthusiasts of walleye-on-a-stick and rhubarb pie contests, we can all breathe a sigh of relief for that.

mmm state fair….. mini donuts … cheese curds … beer garden … a dream that the Vikings could end up over .500 … best time of year.

The only other team less interesting than the Vikings is the Gophers. They better draft Johnny Football if anything just to keep them relevant.

It appears mammals don’t even want to see the Vikings play. Go figure.

It doesn’t matter where they play – the vikings will lose 10+ games EVERY year.

0-4 in Super Bowls – haven’t been in 37 years. Pathetic.

There’re gonna be some holes in their win column.

Why is the state fair so far away?!

  8. sdsmooth says: Apr 24, 2014 2:02 PM

    One obvious hole: W’s

I’m just happy the only night game is their one mandatory Thursday night. Although they broke their streak of losing night games last year, the Vikings have still lost 15 of their last 17 night games. Maybe that will change with the new coaching staff, but let’s just play at noon for a while to be safe.

    Vikings, Gophers, Twins, T-Wolves.

What an exciting time to be a Minnesota sports fan!

Trying to figure out how the Vikings could go to four Super Bowls while losing 10 games every year. Something isn’t adding up, ibalty.

Its going to be awesome to see the Vikings play for two years outdoors just like the good ‘ol days! The Bank is going to be rocking with purple pride. With Zimmer at the helm and a crushing D, I don’t see how the Vikings lose any home games this year. Skol

Unfortunately, when your record in the previous year sucks, there are limited weeknight prime-time games the following year. Lets hope the U of M is real irritated with weeknight games next year. And the U is worried about disrupting college students on a weeknight game? Is that possible?

  15. backdapack4evr says: Apr 24, 2014 2:22 PM

Plenty of holes in the Vikings D!!
    Lol

    They suck

    Let’s go crazy!
    Lets get nuts!
Na na na-na until they put us in the truck.

Or something like that, I suppose.

I think we all know the Gophers are an awful football program, and they could easily beat the Vikings.

Last year I drove to Minny for a game. I went into a gas station to use the bathroom and mistakenly left my two tickets on the dashboard of my car. When I came out my window was smashed and someone left two more tickets.

why do the vikings eat their cereal from a plate? because they lost all four of their bowls!!! SKOL

There’s a joke in Iowa that goes like this:

Q: Why doesn’t Iowa get a pro football team?
A: Because Minnesota would want one too.

  22. ruvelligwebuike says: Apr 24, 2014 2:58 PM

    The funny thing about this…

A pro football team, a D-1 college football team (1) and a big state fair. This is not really all that special.

But in the Minnesota mind, these are amazing amenities that only Minnesota can dare to boast of. Because they are an elite society. Like Wisconsin, Illinois…everywhere doesn’t have the same thing. It’s just beyond pathetic.

The Australian Beer Battered potato with chili, cheese and sour cream at the MN state fair for $9 is pretty good though.

Can Not Wait for Outdoor Football!!!

  24. bassplucker says: Apr 24, 2014 7:20 PM

Well the Vikings are basically a college team anyway so it all kinda makes sense.

  25. gbmickey says: Apr 24, 2014 7:57 PM

Just look at the lowly Vikings having only 1 primetime game and that’s because of the popularity of the Packers. After finishing last once again what a low point in Viking fandom. Embrace The Suck!

  26. jrmbadger says: Apr 25, 2014 9:07 AM

Well, at least the league doesn’t have to work around any conflicts in January.

  27. lloydchristmas1 says: Apr 25, 2014 11:48 AM

I wonder how long its going to take Vikings fans to figure out parking for the games. I tailgate at the state fair lot and take the free shuttle for Gopher games and it works great.

  28. whatjusthapped says: Apr 25, 2014 5:29 PM

The poor Minnesota fan will be confused, they pay for a pro game and watch a college team, but which team was it?
