Rumors aside, don’t expect the Eagles to draft Johnny Manziel

Getty Images

With 10 days to go before the first round of the NFL draft, we’ve reached that point where rumors are running rampant but no one really knows which teams will draft which players. When we hear a juicy rumor, we’ll do our best to assess its merits.

The rumor that the Eagles want to draft quarterback Johnny Manziel apparently has no merits.

Peter King of passes along the rumor today, saying he heard it from a smart and reliable source. But King adds that someone who knows better than that source tells him it absolutely won’t happen.

It’s easy to believe that Eagles coach Chip Kelly is intrigued by Manziel. Kelly recruited Manziel to Oregon, and Manziel initially committed to play for Kelly before changing his mind and committing to Texas A&M. Recounting his recruiting later, Manziel said, “Coach Kelly said I was perfect for their system.”

But Kelly has a good quarterback in Nick Foles, who showed last year that he can put up excellent numbers in Kelly’s offense. Foles is the Eagles’ starter and Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley are in place as the backups, and it would be a surprise if the Eagles use any pick on any quarterback in this draft. A first-round pick on Johnny Manziel? That rumor is too good to be true.

It makes sense the Eagles not draft Manziel, not that he likely would be available at #22 anyway. They have their quarterback in Nick Foles, who clearly has progressed and should continue to with a full offseason to work with the Eagles. They also have Matt Barkley, who may not be what everyone thought he would be in college BUT nonetheless was considered at one time to be the #1 pick in the draft. He also will have another offseason and should mature. Mark Sanchez should also help and is in a good spot for him being under minimal pressure.

No reason for the Eagles to take such a risky QB prospect when the team has way bigger needs on the defense and at WR.

  3. southpaw2k says: Apr 28, 2014 7:55 AM

When Peter King doesn’t even fall for the smokescreen, you know it’s a joke to begin with.

At least Chip Kelly has a sense of humor.

  4. howiefeltersnatch says: Apr 28, 2014 8:09 AM

I’ve never once met a guy named ‘Johnny’ who was a quality individual that could be trusted.

  5. connorchew says: Apr 28, 2014 8:17 AM

He may be a perfect fit in madden, but chip has said from the beginning that his qb needs go be a great decision maker. That’s why nick foles thrives in this system. He may not be the most talented, but he’s smart with the ball in his hands.

  6. eagleswin says: Apr 28, 2014 8:27 AM

Who was the source? Mike Vick?

  7. hanifmiller says: Apr 28, 2014 8:37 AM

I have learned never to discount rumors when it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles. I discredited the McNabb, Dawkins and D. Jackson rumors. And those are just to name a few.

Wasn’t expecting them to. I expect them to go for Van Noy/Barr/Dennard. If none of them are available (which most likely will not) they probably go WR.

  10. rugbyisbetter says: Apr 28, 2014 8:46 AM

Pick a spot on defense and the Eagles likely need it. Draft best available at Defense, unless you have a WR that is ranked ‘that much’ higher than any position on defense.

They have enough QBs, unless Johnny is the highest ranked Safety or OLB, pass on him…

  11. youknowwhatsgoodforshoulderpain says: Apr 28, 2014 8:48 AM

If Manziel is still there past #8, there are like 3 teams licking their chops AHEAD of #22 still. There is ZERO chance the Eagles grab him.

  12. fanofthegame1 says: Apr 28, 2014 8:50 AM

That is funny. Too bad Johnny is no Mariota. That is who Chip would draft.

  13. freevinnycurry says: Apr 28, 2014 8:50 AM

So I’m clear – the Eagles rid themselves of a fan favorite in DeSean Jackson for nothing in return – which as the smoke clears seems to be 100% based on team chemistry – and now with a an all pro QB in place who is only 3 years in the league – they are going to use a first round pick on a guy who smells just like Jackson relative to personal life? Sounds 100% absurd.

  14. gnorules says: Apr 28, 2014 8:53 AM

Wait for Marcus Mariota next year. Smarter, more accurate, and less of an ass then Johnny Football.

  15. freddypatsfan says: Apr 28, 2014 9:06 AM

They already have a established QB, there are bigger needs elsewhere.

  16. stewart09 says: Apr 28, 2014 9:07 AM

with far to many good players to take and in the NFC loaded with contenders and elite teams they cant afford to take someone who wont contribute right away.

  17. jimbo75025 says: Apr 28, 2014 9:16 AM

Seems every team is putting the rumor out there that they want Manziel. The funny part is, I would not be shocked at all if he tumbled greatly and all these teams that “want” him end up passing on him a time or two.

  18. dlove4392 says: Apr 28, 2014 9:19 AM

Interesting but think eagles aren’t interested in him they interview him at the combined, chip Kelly didn’t draft nick files even tho he had a good year who’s to say he will have a good year this season? I’m not doubting that he want but chip offense is good for more for mobile quarterbacks and jhonnny is mobile. It wouldn’t make sense to draft jhonny tho, but then again the draft can be full of surprises me personally my opinion like it or not wanted my eagles to get him sense he was in college because I knew mike Vick wasn’t ho be eagles quarterback for long.

  19. lgbarn says: Apr 28, 2014 9:22 AM

If Manziel is available at 7, maybe the Bucs will trade with the Eagles. We had a great trade (for the Bucs) years ago when the Eagles wanted Mamula. Thanks for the Superbowl and HOF players (Brooks and Sapp) from that draft by the way.

  20. sjoyner59 says: Apr 28, 2014 9:33 AM

All I hear is that after a bad pro day Teddy Bridgewater may drop into the 2nd round(i will believe that when i see it) .With a the game day tape on him where he looks legit I still see him going in the top 10 but if he did fall and the Eagles are on the clock they should take him, they claim to always want the best PLAYER still on the board

  21. fanofthegame1 says: Apr 28, 2014 9:40 AM

Hopefully, Eagles trade this pick for someone who wants to overpay for an overrated QB. This is a good draft to add picks in. A lot of teams drafting 20-30 should be in great position to trade down and benefit.

  22. sonopazzo6 says: Apr 28, 2014 9:44 AM

I’d rather have Tim Tebow………..Tebow, Tebow, Tebow, Tebow!!!!…..I could just see him Tebowing with a cheesesteak in his hand……won’t some club give this kid a chance……I mean he did take and win with the Broncos in the playoffs!

  23. tvjules says: Apr 28, 2014 9:47 AM

Johnny looks like a perfect fit in Jerry’s World.

  24. kastout11 says: Apr 28, 2014 9:59 AM

The Eagles are drafting defense (outside pass rusher if they don’t make the trade with Miami for Jordan, if not a safety). They will not even draft a QB. I think they will grab a WR, if not in the 2nd round, in the 3rd.

  25. thatstinks says: Apr 28, 2014 10:05 AM

That makes no sense . You already have a quality qb in Foles……who has a cheap , CHEAP contract .

  26. restorativejusticeprogram says: Apr 28, 2014 10:06 AM

Eagles bringing in Tebow to compete for B-U QB position. You heard it here first.

  27. jpk6044 says: Apr 28, 2014 10:07 AM

Dean Wormer says the chances of the Eagles drafting Manziel are “zero…point…zero.”

  28. 1bigtex says: Apr 28, 2014 11:00 AM

Can we please lose the Tebow nonsense. He can’t throw a lick!!! Good guy. Terrible passer.

  29. officialgame says: Apr 28, 2014 11:03 AM

Johnny Angel has a better chance of being drafted by the Birds.

  30. missingsock215 says: Apr 28, 2014 11:10 AM

Eagles trade out of the first round. Bet it.

  31. ez0682 says: Apr 28, 2014 11:12 AM

Nick fluke is not chips ideal qb. Soo u idiot eagles fans deal with it. Nick fluke plays against back up qbs holds the ball for years an throws prayers an gets bailed out. Nick bum. Anyways fly eagles fly. Sad off-season

  32. corkspop says: Apr 28, 2014 12:18 PM

Cowboys trade up a few spots to get Manziel. Falcons trade up to No. 1 to get Clowney. Texans get a QB. Everyone is happy.

  33. gallogj says: Apr 28, 2014 12:55 PM

It would not surprise me one bit for the Eagles to trade all of their draft picks to move up for this guy! He is perfect for Kelly’s system. He’s basically a younger Mike Vick.

  34. edavidberg says: Apr 28, 2014 1:21 PM

Only way they take Manziel is if they move Foles. And I have no idea why they’d trade away the sure thing for the uncertain one.

  35. phillywood1330 says: Apr 28, 2014 1:22 PM

Don’t expect the Panters to take him either…

This is why the draft needs to be moved back to it’s original date. This speculation is just getting silly now.

  36. justintuckrule says: Apr 28, 2014 1:40 PM

It would be smart. Foles is kolb 2.0.

  37. iamdinguskhan says: Apr 28, 2014 1:56 PM

Chip would cut him halfway through his rookie year. Clash of egos. Don’t get to comfortable with Foles Eagles fans Chip don’t like players taking his spotlight. Butt fumbler will be your starter this year. Chip Kelly will be back in college where he belongs 2015.

LeBron James No. 1 pick overall

  41. ndrick731 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:12 AM

Johnny Football is going to be a total flop. All those prayers he lobbed up in college will be picked off in the NFL.

  42. greenblood60 says: Apr 30, 2014 6:53 PM

Nick Foles benefited from a scheme ( which created a lot of oppurtunities for easy completion & YAC ) that’s new to the NFL, and he played against four back up QBs, and four coaches who were fired. He’s an extremely slow decision maker. He never makes short or intermediate throws unless the receiver is wide open. Every deep ball he throws looks like a punt, making the WR fight for ball.He has horrible footwork, a slow release, and he has no pocket presence at all; as soon as there’s a hint of pressure he stops going through his progressions. He frequently abandons the pocket way before he needs to.

Johnny Football, Brigdewater, Bortels, Carr, I would take any of those QBs over Foles. Seriously, if some team is willing to give up a first for Foles, Chip and Howie would have to be brain-dead not to make that deal.
