Lovie Smith admits it’s hard to get a read on team this early

As a new coach, Lovie Smith was given an extra minicamp to work with the Buccaneers.

But while no coach is going to turn down work days, Smith was ambivalent about their true usefulness.

I don’t think anybody can distinguish themselves running around in their underwear,’’ Smith said, via Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune. “You just can’t do that. We had a chance to see some of the ability and we knew that.’’

After he was asked about a specific position group, Smith made it clear it was hard to evaluate right now.

“We have all these guys on video, but it’s hard to kind of tell,’’ Smith said. “We want to be able to see them once we get in pads, then we’ll see what they can do.”

Of course, that won’t happen until training camp and the preseason.

For now, they have to install as much as they can, hoping the work in their underwear carries over to the time when the team is fully assembled, and they’re fully clothed.
