McCarron thinks he could go as high as No. 16

Getty Images

Lost between the Manziels and the Bortleses and the Mettenbergers and Murrays and forgotten amid the perceived free fall of Teddy Bridgewater is Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron.

It’s unclear where McCarron will be taken; he reportedly skipped the Senior Bowl because McCarron believed he already was poised to be a top-20 pick.  While McCarron explained that he passed on the Senior Bowl due to injury, he apparently thinks he could end up in the top 20, after all.

While gliding through the ESPN car wash on Monday, McCarron made clear his belief that he won’t be sliding out of round one.

He said that, of his pre-draft visits, “pretty much everyone so far” said he has a first-round grade.

“They felt like I could go anywhere from 16-35,” McCarron said, via  “I believe that, too.  At the same time, I don’t have my hopes set on anything.  Whatever happens, happens.  It’s a blessing for me to even be in this situation.”

If McCarron goes that high (and the Cowboys hold the 16th pick), it will defy the projections of pretty much everyone who is trying to project who will be taken in the first 35 picks.  Still, McCarron realizes that it’s impossible to know what any given team will do with any given pick.

“It’s not like the G.M.s are calling these guys and telling them, ‘Hey, we’re going to draft this guy at this number so go ahead and put that out there,'” McCarron said. “One thing I’ve learned about this whole process, it’s nothing but a big secret.

“A lot of times teams will bring in a guy just to bluff another team and make it seem like toward the media that they like this guy and really they have no interest at all in drafting him.”

He’s right, but if McCarron were destined to be among the first 35 players taken, there would be far more buzz about him than there currently is.

Ultimately, his stock will hinge on how many teams take quarterbacks.  If one or more runs happen in the first round, his name will move higher on the stack for teams looking to fill needs that have yet to be addressed.

    Whatever you say bro.

  2. grndizzle says: Apr 29, 2014 1:21 PM

As high as #16 in round 3 or 4 maybe.

  3. ctiggs says: Apr 29, 2014 1:21 PM

If McBUST goes 16th than i might as well be drafted as well. He is your typical Alabama QB.

  4. southpaw2k says: Apr 29, 2014 1:24 PM

Never heard of one of the potential draftees running a smokescreen before.

  5. that's the best linebacker i've seen since Joe Montana says: Apr 29, 2014 1:24 PM

Someone told him a number range and he repeated it in response to a question. How

The more relevant thing is that he was quoted as saying, “It’s a blessing for me to even be in this situation.”

    Is it almost week 1?

  6. pghkid724 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:24 PM

    So does Brett Musburger.

  7. glennsyank13 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:24 PM

He’d be a good fit as Ponder’s heir apparent.

  8. dethsupport says: Apr 29, 2014 1:25 PM

Vikings will trade up and draft him at 3.

  9. nebster21 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:26 PM

I wonder why he is not getting the Tebow treatment

  10. Straight Cash Homie says: Apr 29, 2014 1:28 PM

I was always told wish in one hand and crap in another and see which gets filled first. It seems AJ is doing a lot of wishing if he thinks he’s going in the first round.

  11. kingokra says: Apr 29, 2014 1:28 PM

I think the title is an editing mistake. It should read “McCarron is high if he thinks he could go No. 16.”

  12. pw1265 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:29 PM

Silly AJ, hasn’t is agent told him there is DRUG TESTING in the NFL??? lmao

  13. phillytailgater says: Apr 29, 2014 1:30 PM

I do like McCarron and his leadership qualities. He also has a solid NFL arm and shows good decision making. His ceiling for example is a Chad Pennington type but realistically a good backup QB is probably his position.

  14. sportzpig says: Apr 29, 2014 1:30 PM

At least he will have that hot girlfriend’s shoulder to cry on when he goes late in the fourth…

  15. linvillegorge says: Apr 29, 2014 1:31 PM

I want as many QBs to go before #28 as possible. That just pushes better options down the board for the Panthers.

  16. getyourownname says: Apr 29, 2014 1:31 PM

It appears that being successful on the girlfriend front distorts one’s sense of reality in general.

  17. phillyguyindc says: Apr 29, 2014 1:33 PM

I’m actually surprised there isn’t more hype about him. Been to national championship games, played in the best conference and put up good numbers. Seems like a good mix to me, not sure what more you could ask for but I’m far from an armchair QB expert mechanics wise.

  18. conormacleod says: Apr 29, 2014 1:33 PM

Nothing on earth would make me more angry than if my team picked McCarron in the first round.

  19. gofor2with3pointlead says: Apr 29, 2014 1:33 PM

If he’s trying to convince himself, he should check to see if he’s on the list of prospects….he’s not.

  20. tombradyallday says: Apr 29, 2014 1:33 PM

maybe AJ is high, or maybe saban will draft him back to Bama

  21. greenwhodat26 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:35 PM

At first I thought, “pfffffhahah..” And then I thought, “EJ Manuel…”

  22. rahavort says: Apr 29, 2014 1:38 PM

I’d take his girlfriend with the first overall pick

  23. laxman1944 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:38 PM

    Roll Tide

  24. FlashPatterson says: Apr 29, 2014 1:40 PM

haha, come on dude. It’s good to be optimistic, but you’re not going in the first round.

  25. dryzzt23 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:44 PM

SEC QBs don’t do well in the NFL. I don’t see how this kid will be any different from the previous SEC failures as NFL QBs.

I do think his girlfriend could be an NFL cheerleader though 🙂

  26. opinevain says: Apr 29, 2014 1:45 PM

Every QB believes he’s worthy of a top pick or first round. What else are they suppose to say? “Im only worth a 5th round pick…”?

  27. tvjules says: Apr 29, 2014 1:46 PM

Did his reality tv producer tell him to say that?

  28. beavertonsteve says: Apr 29, 2014 1:46 PM

May 12th headline on PFT “McCarron fires agent after draft day freefall”

  29. theclink12 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:49 PM

I believe I still have a shot with Katherine Webb, too.

  30. alldonesmith says: Apr 29, 2014 1:50 PM

In unrelated news, the NFL has just requested that Mr. McCarron return to Indianapolis for a few more brain scans.

  31. eagleseagleseagles says: Apr 29, 2014 1:52 PM

Yeah sure. I was told I’d be the number 1 overall pick. look where I am now.

  32. icup89 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:52 PM

All it takes is one team. Ponder and EJ are good examples of guys who got drafted way higher then thought 9 days before the draft.

  33. mf7krime says: Apr 29, 2014 1:52 PM

His girlfriend will leave him after he becomes a nobody in the infinite ocean of NFL stars vs the king of the hill in Alabama and always under the bright lights of the media spotlight.

She’ll stick with him for about a year into his pro career and then bounce.

  34. roarofthemasses says: Apr 29, 2014 1:57 PM

Once the league loses one overhyped thumper, he must be replaced by another.

  35. dalcow4 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:58 PM

    He will be VERY disappointed.

Then again, if at that age I was a National Championship QB, had the run of a campus, town, and national fan base of one of the best college programs, and had a hot model girlfriend— I’d have an exaggerated self worth too.

  36. tennesseetitan78 says: Apr 29, 2014 1:59 PM

    Yeah just keep thinking that..

  37. uglydingo says: Apr 29, 2014 2:02 PM

He needs to work on inserting some realism to his modest self image. AJ is a decent QB and personality shouldn’t come into it but who would honestly this festering turd in your locker room? Nick Saban must feel like a proud father.

  38. chaseutley says: Apr 29, 2014 2:05 PM

I’m all for it. My team will not be drafting a QB this year. A team wasting a first rounder on AJ pushes a quality player one pick closer to us.

  39. patriotsarespygaters says: Apr 29, 2014 2:06 PM

hmmm Kate webb might’ve put him up to this ….this is clearly a reality show stunt

  40. djshnooks says: Apr 29, 2014 2:06 PM

Bust written all over this kid.

Murray will end up being better.

  41. fwippel says: Apr 29, 2014 2:08 PM

McCarron as high as 16? In round three maybe.

Bridgewater is, and will be in the NFL, a better QB.

  42. warjag55 says: Apr 29, 2014 2:08 PM

The Saban machine sure does get his guys up for a huge letdown. Look at the draft picks since 2007 from Alabama.

  43. youknowwhatsgoodforshoulderpain says: Apr 29, 2014 2:16 PM

Honestly, watching him play on film, he has one of the most underrated arms of the QBs in this draft. I’m not a huge fan of his in general, but he could surprise the analysts by sneaking into the top of the second round. I think the first round is a loooooooong shot, though.

  44. autoriot says: Apr 29, 2014 2:20 PM

He is the best pure passing QB in the draft. No other QB in the draft has his accolades or experience on their resume.

If he goes anywhere outside of the first round, it will be a steal for whoever gets him that low.

  45. ipskipskyblue says: Apr 29, 2014 2:36 PM

Only if the lady friend comes in the package.

  46. somatg3 says: Apr 29, 2014 2:37 PM

Any word as to whether AJ passed his mandatory drug test at the NFL combine?

  47. thatstinks says: Apr 29, 2014 2:50 PM

I’m sure this will be covered in his fabulous reality show with his fabulous girlfriend which I’m sure will be just fabulous . Like the Dolphin Hardknocks with Taneyhill and his fabulous girlfriend but no football . Just feeding puppies and putting boxed furniture together . Fabulous !

McCarron flat out sucks… no shot at all at being an NFL QB… the guy has no arm.. and he is ugly….

  51. njoberg says: Apr 29, 2014 3:08 PM

VIKES take Mack @8 McCarron next rd.

  52. dcowboys885082 says: Apr 29, 2014 3:12 PM

LMAO a QB… Dallas needs a proven FS! We haven’t had one sense Woodson! Pair Prior with Church and DAllas finally has a good secondary if MO can wake up

    That’s adorable.

  54. peymax1693 says: Apr 29, 2014 3:18 PM

Somebody needs to tell A.J. to stop hanging around Jim Irsay.

  55. 32assassin says: Apr 29, 2014 3:22 PM

to bad his last name is not Rivers, his perfect nickname would be

    A.J. “DeNyle” Rivers

  56. stillers1229 says: Apr 29, 2014 4:01 PM

“He’s right, but if McCarron were destined to be among the first 35 players taken, there would be far more buzz about him than there currently is.”

No one was talking about EJ Manuel in the first round last year either.

  57. greenbleeder says: Apr 29, 2014 4:03 PM

    McCarron is high.

  58. tooz72 says: Apr 29, 2014 4:04 PM

He should be the second qb taken behind Tommy Rees

  59. whatjusthapped says: Apr 29, 2014 4:07 PM

    Let’s take stock of his attributes;

over inflated opinion of his skill set (check)
weak arm, not NFL ready (check)
has illusions of grandeur without any supporting evidence that he can achieve it (check)

Yup, sounds like a perfect pick for the Vikings.

  60. bensstinkyfingers says: Apr 29, 2014 4:12 PM

His girlfriend has a better chance of getting drafted top 25 in the lingerie football league. A.J. will not go until 2-3 rd round at best. Apparently winning a national championship, with top tier teammates, swole his ego up a little. having a hot girlfriend will also have that effect.

  61. jgroff05 says: Apr 29, 2014 4:21 PM

Dallas doesn’t want a game manager and he played on a loaded team and he also had a team that covered up his shortcomings and he isn’t elite talent

  62. theuglitruth says: Apr 29, 2014 4:47 PM

Thanks AJ….I was having a tough day. I needed the laugh!

  63. thelastwordyaheard says: Apr 29, 2014 5:23 PM

he also thinks that tattooing his entire torso is a great idea..

  64. trollaikman8 says: Apr 29, 2014 5:34 PM

He’s confused. 16-35 is his projected completion-to-attempt numbers at the next level. Tack on 2 ints.

  65. packfaninpackland says: Apr 29, 2014 5:38 PM

Oooookay A.J. … delusion, it’s not just for everyone !

McCarron is Jay Barker with better stats and a slightly better looking girl friend, although, Sara Evans is pretty damn hot too !!!

  66. itsfootballbaby says: Apr 29, 2014 5:39 PM

As crazy as that sounds….remember Tebow went #25.

  67. gbatap says: Apr 29, 2014 5:48 PM

#16 in the 5th round maybe.

  68. kayakattack says: Apr 29, 2014 5:51 PM

Arent there enough McCowns in the league? oh wait…

  69. ebbycalvinlaloosh says: Apr 29, 2014 5:56 PM

He’ll actually go somewhere between 35 and 96. He’s a second or third round pick.

  70. granadafan says: Apr 29, 2014 5:57 PM

JaMarcus Russell, another SEC QB bust, had a better career than AJ will.

  71. nite2al says: Apr 29, 2014 5:59 PM

    Please, AJ, dump your agent.

  72. trubroncfan07 says: Apr 29, 2014 6:05 PM

Welcome to the Green Room AJ McCarron your going to be here a while.

  73. thefiesty1 says: Apr 29, 2014 6:10 PM

The next Romo. Poised to continue the tradition of going 8-8 every year.

  74. brownsmakemecrazy says: Apr 29, 2014 6:35 PM

AJ i hope u fall to 35 and Browns draft you.

  75. filthymcnasty1 says: Apr 29, 2014 6:49 PM

Don’t sell yourself short AJ. Picking at number 8, the Vikings are known for reaching a lot further than that.

  76. gbp4ever says: Apr 29, 2014 7:14 PM

He could end up maybe the 116th pick.

  77. swaggyy says: Apr 29, 2014 7:36 PM

I think AJ McCarron is going to be a solid NFL starting QB. True competitor and proven winner.

  78. nomoreseasontix says: Apr 29, 2014 7:51 PM

He could go at 16 or 116. Nobody knows.
    I’ll tell you next weekend.

  79. ytownjoe says: Apr 29, 2014 9:21 PM

    Wishful thinking.
