The Giants signed Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Walter Thurmond and Zack Bowman this offseason, but that wasn’t a reflection on their feelings about cornerback Prince Amukamara.
According to multiple reports, the Giants have exercised their option on Amukamara’s contract for the 2015 season. Under the terms of the CBA, the 2011 first-round pick will make $6.898 million if he plays out the season under the terms of the original contract. The two sides can reach an extension that replaces the current deal and the salary is guaranteed against injury only, so the Giants could back out between now and the 2015 season.
It’s unlikely that they will do that, however. Amukamara isn’t in the top tier of cornerbacks in the league, but turned in the best of his three professional seasons in 2013 and will be making less than $8 million for the next two season. He doesn’t turns 25 until June, which is a reason to hope that there will be even better results in the coming years as part of the Giants’ revamped cornerback corps.
Teams have until Saturday to decide whether or not they will exercise the 2015 options on their 2011 first-round picks. Most of the calls have already been made with the 49ers’ decision about linebacker Aldon Smith standing out as the biggest remaining question mark.
