PFT: What should the 49ers do with Aldon Smith?

Jason Taylor, Jon Ritchie and Mike Florio discuss the options the 49ers have for LB Aldon Smith. Florio believes this is a very difficult decision for the organization.

    If they don’t pick up the option it will cost them an extra 3-5 million next year that we can’t afford. No brainer.

    Makes no sense not to pick it up when you can still cut him between now and the first league day of the new year without it costing you anything. If you don’t pick it up you might as well be telling every team in the league you probably aren’t going to sign him beyond 2014 then his trade value drops significantly because you lose leverage. Not picking up the option would be plain stupid business wise.

    jg78219, if they do pick up the option and he is unable to play due to oh.. lets say… having to do jail time.. .that may be more expensive than having to shell out an extra 3 to 5 million later on which they may have had to pay anyway.
