Reggie McKenzie: You draft for the future, not today

The Raiders added a slew of players to their roster this offseason, many of whom could be described as seasoned NFL veterans in the back half of their careers.

Many drew a line from those additions to the need for General Manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen to build a winning team this season so that they could hold onto their jobs into 2015. McKenzie may be feeling that pressure, but he said Thursday that he’s not focused on looking for players who will help the team right away.

“You draft for the future,” McKenzie said, via Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group. “You don’t draft for right now. That’s not the way you do it. That’s not the way I do it.”

Ideally, a team in the Raiders’ position would get some immediate help while also building for the future but it’s hard to argue with the long view espoused by McKenzie. The Raiders have seven picks and could pick up more by trading down in the first round for the second straight year, something that McKenzie is open to doing if the right offer should come along.

McKenzie also said he expects the Raiders to be better this year, with or without a lot of help from the draft class. However things wind up going next week, they’d better be if McKenzie’s going to run another draft in 2015.

  1. He’s clueless ! He has proven that he is just another Matt Millen, a dumb lineman in a GM chair. He has established an all OR all star team that won’t make it half way through the season. The Raiders further rest in Johnny Football, but truth said Reggie is reactive, not proactive and knows Nothing about building for the future, trading our pick away to obtain players that can be picked anytime. Bottom line there are plenty of Receivers, Linemen etc…But only one JOHNNY FOOTBALL ! REGGIE doesn’t understand picking good players for the ft, job is too big for him

  2. Reggie has no idea what to do. He is gonna screw up this draft way worse than Al would have. I will give it a 50% chance he is fired by week 1 and 100% chance he is fired by seasons end.

  3. His comments don’t reflect his actions. he let their LT & DE leave this offseason. Both good young players and they had plenty of cap space to keep one or both.

  4. You learned your lessons well in Green Bay, sitting at the feet of the master, grasshopper!

  5. It’s waaay too early to consider pulling the plug on Reggie – when he got there Oakland was in salary cap hell, paying out more money to players who were no longer on the team than to players who actually were wearing the silver & black.

This is actually the first year in his tenure where the Raiders have salary cap room. Firing him after this season would be foolish.

    Give the man some time!

  6. They’ll be better this year. Bad luck that the schedule seems so tough. They might not have any more wins than last year.

  7. Reggie McKenzie, or any member of the Raiders organization for the matter, should probably not be handing out draft advice. Commitment to excrement.

  8. The worst GM of the NFL speaks as if anybody cares about his ideas. He took an 8-8 team and turned into a bottom dweller . His drafts have been a bust along with his offseason signings.

  9. This is the most inept franchise in all of sports. They have the fifth pick, and it’s a lock they’ll screw it up. If you look at their draft history over the last ten years, it’s abysmal.

  10. Let’s see, we let go of a run stopping DE with a career high in sack at 7? And a LT who can’t stay healthy both of whom were overpaid, in a draft where clowney, Mack, Robinson, mathuews, and Watkins will be available. I likes Houston and hulk but we know what kinda average players they are. IN REGGIE I TRUST! #WATKINS2OAK

  11. What a bunch of haters here. Sounds like a lot of fans of other teams scared the Raiders are going to come to town and give their team a Beatdown.

  12. I’m amazed how many haters there are out there that just don’t get it. You can’t turn a train wreck around in two years. It took ten years for the Raiders to get in this mess. it’s going to take at least 4 to 5 yrs to get out of it. Thrown in a new GM on his first gig (sorry hater but how many people were lining up to take this job in the first place?) And can we let the “he let his two best players go blah blah blah… they left because they wanted to leave period. If they wanted to stay, they would have stayed. Based on all the fact, they only way they would have stayed is for Reggie to overpay them and that’s what go the Raiders in the mess they are in now. For once, can we operate in reality here. Yes, the Raider suck right now. They deserve the criticism but all GMs make mistakes, Reggie is no exception. He will learn. Give the man time. If they Raiders still suck after 4 years, ok. Maybe he’s not the guy.

  13. Judging by the Raiders recent “success” in the draft maybe they would be better off trading away all their picks every year.

It couldn’t possibly get any worse could it?

  14. They’ll draft some kid projected to go in the third round with the 5th pick.

  15. Im starting to really question Reg . If you are drafting for the future how come so many picks have been wasted . You need a high impact draft Reg .

  16. It amazes me that people including major news organization still point to the past ten yr draft history of the Raiders. As if Al Davis is still making these decisions. I’m not saying that Mckenzie is a draft guru(not much history) but you can’t keep saying look at their draft history over the past ten yrs, they’ll DEFINITELY screw it up. Ignorance is bliss. RAIDERS WILL RISE!!!!!!!

  17. The Raiders are very bad because their drafts have been very bad and Reggie has not shown that he has what it takes to turn it around. Reggie did not come away with one starter in his 2012 draft and arguably only one starter in his 2013 draft. In 2013 with his first overall pick he reaches for an injured player in Hayden who still is not a slam dunk. Then he reaches again in the 2nd round for Watson who was a one year starter at Florida St. Reggie did trade down for an extra pick to get Watson but did not get the appropriate point value in doing so. When he first came in, he fired all the experienced scouts and hired his not very smart brother as the chief scout with the responsibility of rebuilding the scout team. It showed. Then to begin the 2014 season Reggie let his best three players get away when he had by far the most money in the NFL to spend in aquiring FA’s. The bottom line is that if Mark Davis is smart he would replace Reggie after the draft but keep the coaches.

  18. The raiders are finally in a good position as far as the cap goes for once in my 20 years of being a fan.Last season we let go of “key players” Bush, Wheeler,Bryant,Shaughnessy,Huff,Kelly etc and what did they do? Mitchell and Lechler were probably the only ones what made a impact on their new teams but thats about it. Before judging Big Reg about not drafting well and not re signing players lets see what his full draft class will do this upcoming season.L.Wood Tuck MJD bringing veteran presence for Moore Burris and Latavius….
    Pretty excited about the future

  19. Will the Raider ever be a real NFL team again? God, the ownership, front office and everything else is such a joke. Nation, exorcise yourself of the Davis Demon seed. Oak needs real pros that know what they are doing.
