Report: Raiders rule out a quarterback at No. 5

Raiders' general manager McKenzie speaks about new head coach Allen during a news conference at the Raiders' training facility in Oakland Reuters

The Raiders’ first-round pick has historically been one of the hardest to predict heading into the draft, but according to one report, we can rule out a quarterback at No. 5.

That’s the word from Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, who reports that the Raiders aren’t really considering drafting either of the top two quarterbacks, Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M or Blake Bortles of Central Florida, with the fifth overall pick.

That report contradicts what Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie has said, which is that the Raiders remain open to drafting their quarterback of the future, even if they’ve already spent a sixth-round pick on a trade for Matt Schaub to be their quarterback of the present.

“Because we traded for Schaub does that mean we’re going to bypass a [quarterback] that we’ve got graded a certain way? No,” McKenzie said.

If the Raiders don’t draft a quarterback, they’ll go into training camp with Schaub as the starter, Matt McGloin as a young backup they hope can develop and Trent Edwards as a veteran backup. That may not be as inspiring as Johnny Football in Silver and Black, but that appears to be the direction in which the Raiders are headed.

They just made the Browns pick at #4 worth a ton of picks to anyone that wants Watkins (assuming he is still there).

Betters the chance of manziel coming to Minnesota!

Either way, the Raiders will draft the wrong QB.

History has shown that they can’t draft.

What kind of franchise takes Jamarcus Russell over Adrian Peterson and Megatron?

    An incompetent one.

The Vikings will draft the best QB in the entire draft.

  4. raiderbri100 says: May 4, 2014 5:37 PM

If Clowney or Watkins are gone by #5, trade down and get picks.

  5. TheDPR says: May 4, 2014 5:40 PM

Saying you aren’t taking a QB at the #5 spot doesn’t contradict saying that they haven’t ruled out drafting a QB if he’s graded right for them. Perhaps they don’t think any of the QBs in the draft are worth the #5 pick. I’d tend to agree with them.

  6. raider316 says: May 4, 2014 5:40 PM

I maybe be wrong here but aren’t there more rounds in the draft than just 1?

How is not drafting a QB in the 1st round contradicting Reggie. Show me the quote where he said they would take a QB in the first.

  7. bennyb82 says: May 4, 2014 5:43 PM

Schaub had a horrible year last year, but if I’m the Raiders I am pretty content with him starting the season.

  8. boycord says: May 4, 2014 5:44 PM

If he is there at #5 I think the Raiders jump on him. Manziel can benefit sitting behind a vet for a year or two, and Schaub can keep the position warm.

  9. andyr2120 says: May 4, 2014 5:45 PM

This can only mean that they have every intention of drafting a QB at #5.

  10. thestrategyexpert says: May 4, 2014 5:47 PM

Maybe they trade down a handful of spots so they could get a good value on a QB, whereas a team like the Lions has a thinner board since they are less apt to using their 1st Rounder on a QB than Oakland would be.

  11. bennyb82 says: May 4, 2014 5:48 PM

Schaub could have a bounce-back year. I think it makes much more sense to give him a shot instead of going all in on the 2nd or 3rd QB selected in the draft.

  12. bennyb82 says: May 4, 2014 5:53 PM

The reason they are saying this is probably because they expect 1 or 2 QBs to already be off the board when they pick. So then a team that wants whoever remains out of Mack, Clowney, Watkins, Robinson will have to assume that the Raiders are going to draft their guy. Then maybe they can trade down and get more in return.

  14. nativeraider says: May 4, 2014 5:57 PM

Why draft a QB when we got McGloin? He showed some flashes last year and led the NFL in passes complete of 20+ yards after he was named the starter.

  15. raider8er says: May 4, 2014 5:57 PM

There ain’t no Andrew Luck this year. No sure QB. I’ll be pleased if we take Mack, Watkins, Robinson or Matthews. All solid.

  16. thefiesty1 says: May 4, 2014 5:58 PM

Schuab will be just as bad this year as he was last year. The
Raiders as usual will switch QB’s two or three times this season, just like the last few years.

NFL Gods: thank you for giving us the Raiders drafting, Mike Brown & Synder (sad for me, laughs for everyone else) as owners, Browns factory of sadness and GM Jerry Jones who has absolute authority of the ‘Boys.

Without those blue chip comedic franchises, the game would be dull.

  21. j0esixpack says: May 4, 2014 6:14 PM

This is a smart move for the Raiders

(MAN it feels weird to say that)

Trade back or take one later in the draft, address other positions with players who are more of a sure fire starter

  22. azjohnny says: May 4, 2014 6:21 PM

    2 things

    1. Dont trust anything a Coach/GM/ Owner says before the draft

2.IMO none of the QBs are worthy of a 1 st round pick. In order for a team to trade down another team has to be willing to trade up and in this years draft there are very few players worth trading up for ( few studs, lots of good players)

  23. theneedforspeeed says: May 4, 2014 6:28 PM

You guys keep saying not to believe anything teams say leading up to the draft, but now you believe the Raiders? Really?

  24. psly2124 says: May 4, 2014 6:39 PM

I laugh when people says hear that no qb is first round worthy. Manziel is heads and shoulders above the others. The reason most of these qb’s bust in the first round is not having a stable team. There is always transition. Whether it’s a new offensive coordinator or new head coach. Most of the time it’s a few times. Take Jamarcus Russell for instance. He had kiffen, cable and was let go when hue Jackson came aboard. He had a different oc each year. That’s tough for a young qb. If you look at the successful qb’s there has been little to no change.

With the exception of the Gannon/Gruden couple of years, this team has been disappointing me for 30 years. However, I certainly feel that Matt Schaub, with a change of scenery and fresh start, is a better option than any of these rookies. No offense to them, but Schaub could well be the guy for the next 4-5 years, and we could get a Watkins, Mack or Barr instead of a guy who sits a couple years.

  29. jeromepc01 says: May 4, 2014 7:27 PM

LOL. Non-Raiders fans can only hope that Oakland plans on going into the season with Matt Schaub and Matt McGloin as their quarterbacks. All of their halfway decent free agent signings will be for not with quarterback play like that in the Silver and Black.

    **********************************************************************************************
I’m so sick of reading the much over used cliche statement that “There ain’t no Andrew Luck this Year” comments I don’t know what to do. Let me start off by first saying, I think that Luck is a good/very good QB. BUT…….People act as if he was/is head and shoulders better than every other QB from his draft class. Lets see, RG3 DESERVINGLY beat Luck for O-ROY. Russel Wilson had better OVERALL stats than Luck and has proven to be a much better playoff performer. Albeit Luck has orchestrated several comeback victories, 2 of his 3 performances in the playoffs have been nothing short of ATROCIOUS! In fact his career playoff completion ratio is 55% with 6 TD’s and 8 INT’S!! So before we go declaring Andrew Luck as the “benchmark of QB Greatness” I believe we should look at it for what it truly is.

  31. raiderrob21 says: May 4, 2014 7:29 PM

If Clowney, Watkins, and Mack (In that order) are all gone before we select at #5……The pick is traded to the highest bidder.

  33. nomoreseasontix says: May 4, 2014 7:37 PM

If Watkins and Mack are off the board, they’ll trade down and maybe grab a QB later. I doubt they want Clowney after dealing with his alter ego, McClain. There isn’t really a high first round QB available this year.
More value in a trade down.

Schaub is easily the best QB the Raiders have had since Gannon. They should be grateful and not destroy it with flirting with unproven rookie QBs. It works out once in a while (Wilson in Seattle) , but most times you take 10 steps back trying to take a 1/2 step forward. Stick with Matt and see what you have.
The coach is probably their biggest problem anyway.

  37. Matt dog from C-town says: May 4, 2014 7:55 PM

SMOKESCREEN ALERT…….isn’t funny how all the teams that are so desperate for a quarterback are trying to put it out there that there are no qb’s worth taking high…

  39. raiderapologist says: May 4, 2014 7:56 PM

Manziel would sell tickets, and also has as good a chance as any of the other QBs in this draft to be successful. But Oakland needs extra draft picks more than a coin flip shot at a QB, so I hope they trade out of that spot. But if they don’t, I wouldn’t be pissed if they took JFF. If he was available, of course.

  45. raiderjohnny says: May 4, 2014 8:51 PM

Fi rst of all, everybody is lying at this phase of the draft process. anything Tafur says at this point is sure speculation. no team is going to review all their true plans ahead of time. secondly, even if the Raiders don’t draft a quarterback at number 5 that doesn’t mean they won’t draft one later on.

  46. madroaddog says: May 4, 2014 9:01 PM

The no brainer is to trade down if the offer and value are there or draft the highest rated OT to solidify the O line. That said, Reggie has proven the last two years that he is not up to the task so once again I will be drowning my nochos with beer to absorb the pain.

  47. raidersfourlife says: May 4, 2014 9:10 PM

In other words for this time of the season, The Oakland Raiders are selecting a QB 5th Overall. I doubt Vic has a true clue about whats going on, he asks questions during an interview, thats about it. He is not an insider lol.

So, how do you Raiders’ fans feel about that guy being your team’s solution to anything???

I don’t have a problem. Sure Schaubs not the best but I bet Eli M. and Rivers had worse years as starters than him and wheres everyone complaining about them? Theres just so much hate because its the Raiders. If a different team picked him up it would be “a tremendous value”.

  53. pizzasaurus says: May 4, 2014 11:22 PM

It might not be the sexiest option, but picking up a cornerstone OT to hold down the position for the next dozen years is the kind of thing GMs building for the long term do. Grabbing Manziel to sit behind Schaub while fans call for him to play, then getting him killed behind a bad OL is the kind of thing GMs worried about losing their jobs do.

I love people saying the raiders don’t draft QB’s well because of Russell… The other top QBin that draft that was a can’t miss was Brady Quinn… Really not any better. They would have been ridiculed either way… It is a crap shoot. The old raiders were not on misfits that nobody wanted. Plunket, Gannon, etc… That used to work, but has not been properly executed for years due to All being senile. I will cross my fingers that Schaub Plunkets out this year and that McGloin is our Aaron Rodgers to develop on the bench. Take a DB or DL or OL. Do we really need 19 receivers on the team? Jones, Holmes, Moore, Streater, Butler are all a good fit. Yeah, it may not work out that way, but a fan can dream. I would rather be a wishful fan than a Chargers fan who takes more prude in bashing the Raiders than they do watching their team win.

  61. araidersfan says: May 5, 2014 8:30 AM

McKenzie’s words mean little to me. I’m just hoping that he can make competent draft picks this year.

I don’t fault him for 2012 where we had no 1st or 2nd rounder due to Hue Jackson’s imbecilic trade for Carson Palmer. But the 2013 draft looks pretty bad although I’m hopeful that Hayden can be a decent CB.

By all accounts, this year’s draft class is quite deep in talent and if McKenzie can’t select impact players, then the Raiders should soon be looking for another GM.

  62. swortybounce says: May 5, 2014 8:31 AM

IF, Watkins is on the board, the selection should be an easy one for the Raiders. I would draft a QB in the late rounds this year. No need to force a QB early-on out of this draft.

Out of the Tom Savage, Jimmy Garoppolo, Zach Mettenberger, A.J. McCarron & Aaron Murray crop, IMO one or two of these guys turn into decent pro QBs.

  63. jjackwagon says: May 5, 2014 8:38 AM

Raiders made a move for Schaub. I wouldn’t draft a QB at #5 either. No guarantee Schuab will rebound but you have to give him the chance. Drafting a QB @ #5 just tells Schaub that you have already given up on him. I seem to remember another QB that the Raiders picked up after the Chiefs had decided Grbac was the starter. Gannon played in one SB and that one was a tuck-rule away from another.

Reggie, (Fred Flintstone) of the NFL, needs to simply get the hell out of Oakland and go back to Green Bay. His GM chair is too big for him, he is incompetent (Matt Millen mentor) and has NO clue what he’s doing in the draft room. Mark Davis doesn’t care about the team, because of his hatred for his dad, so the Raider Nation is doomed once again on draft day. Last year Fred drafted from a Convalescent home pool of talent, this year, maybe he will go the homeless route. The available receivers, linemen etc..are all interchangeable, but if he was really drafting for the future, then there is only one JOHNNY FOOTBALL ! Unfortunately for Fred, his future as GM will be short lived

  70. R. Scott Freeman says: May 5, 2014 1:24 PM

I think we could use our 5 pick and still get the QB we covet most in the draft (Carr). If he is still available @ 29, we could trade up to New England’s pick and get him. Why trade up 7 picks? Because one of the other teams (Minnesota, Tampa or Jacksonville) could trade up to get him ahead of us. Also, as unlikely as it seems, Houston could take him with the 33.

  72. mindset839 says: May 5, 2014 2:34 PM

The Raiders need to come out of this draft with a QB. I think Carr, Bridgewater, Manziel, or Aaron Murray all have the potential to be top flight starters. I am not sold on Bortles, Garafalo, or Savage. Mettenberger is a maybe. One of those four needs to be wearing silver and black four days from now so we can fix this problem once and for all. Hopefully they can trade out of five and get one of these guys a little later in the draft or wait and take Murray with the second round pick. With Schaub on the roster the rookie can have a year or two to learn NFL football. All of these “experts” have had too much time and over-evaluated these guys. I think the QBs are much better than they are given credit. Bridgewater had 31 TDs versus 4 picks and completed 71% of his passes in a pro style offense. Carr has excellent accuracy and a great arm. Manziel just knows how to ball. Murray might be the most over looked talent in the draft. Makes all the throws, good leader, and smart. Looks a lot like Russell Wilson when he plays. Mettenberger is a big guy and has a great arm but you have to wonder his well his knee has healed. He needs to work on his accuracy a little also. I like Bortles but he looks like he pushes the ball when he throws. Savage is overrated because he doesn’t have the accuracy needed for the next level. And what’s with all the transfers? I might not be giving Gaeafalo enough credit but he is taken a huge step up in competition that will be tough to overcome. Anyway, that’s my opinion and it is probably as sound as any of the “experts”.

The Raiders didn’t make a mistake in drafting the consensus number one player in the draft, any team that needed a quarterback would have taken him and the Raiders were looked at as smart for drafting him. The Raiders have made some reaches and bad picks, but that pick wasn’t one of them.

  75. rmooresraiders says: May 7, 2014 7:00 AM

With Shaub there the Raiders don’t need to feel desperate in waisting a draft pick on a QB. Especially when the 2015 draft class is supposed to have a better & deeper class of QB’s. Draft smart Reggie. You don’t have cap issues anymore.
