Punter Ryan Quigley gives up No. 1 to Michael Vick for $10,000 charity donation

Quarterback Michael Vick decided he wanted to wear No.1 with the New York Jets as his long time jersey number, No. 7, is being worn by current Jets starter Geno Smith.

However, the No. 1 jersey was also currently occupied by a player already on the team. Punter Ryan Quigley wore No. 1 for the Jets last season and Vick came to Quigley asking what he would want in exchange for the number.

According to Kristian Dyer of the Yahoo Sports, Quigley agreed to a deal in exchange for the number. Vick would donate $10,000 to a pair of charities: Teen Angel of North Myrtle Beach, a charity that supports homeless teenagers, and to the Boys and Girls Club of New York.

“$10,000 is a lot of money, especially for a guy like me early in my career. For a second, I thought that but then I thought that I can do some good with it. You can give back in so many ways and money is one way,” Quigley said.

Vick was debating between the No. 1 and No. 8 before coming back to Quigley and asking for his jersey number.

“$10,000 is a lot of money,” Quigley said. “I hope it helps a lot of people.”

An nfl player who thinks 10g is a lot of cash. Instant credibility in my books.

Should be more people like him. Great to know a few still exist. Most players would have requested more and pocketed the money. Great deed !

Yawn. Jersey number for an aged back up on a bad team. Who cares?

Punters relate to the working man so well… that IS alot of money.

  15. natelan69 says: May 6, 2014 5:41 AM

Well, that’s a tale of two very different men. A stud-of-a-man punter, and a piece-of-human-garbage quarterback.

Best wishes to Quigley in his career.

Thats a really nice gesture! Way to go punter!

    This guy gets it…

  18. mykpfsu says: May 6, 2014 7:46 AM

Lucky he is on the Jets. Chris Kluwe would’ve sued him over the number.

  19. jetfan74 says: May 6, 2014 8:49 AM

And that’s how it’s done, donate to charity. I think Mike can afford it.

I am now a Ryan Quigley fan. No chance I will ever be a Mike Vick fan.

Nice story for a change. Very refreshing. It’s not like the guy makes a ton of dough being a punter.

  22. leftlaneisforpassingonly says: May 6, 2014 9:46 AM

I hate the Jets but I am now a fan of Quigley. So much so I hope he sets a career record for number of punts this year.

Bucking the trend of “making it rain”…there’s hope, albeit very little

Anybody want to guess who will be broke a few years after they leave the league?

Agree with the above poster, it is very good to hear a pro athlete realize that 10k is a lot of money. Good on him for the thought and for the action of donating the cash. Made himself look real good and good for him! Still not going to be a fan because he is a Jet, but won’t forget the guy either.

  26. raiderapologist says: May 6, 2014 11:42 AM

Does Quigley have to now purchase all of his unsold jerseys?

  27. djshnooks says: May 6, 2014 6:58 PM

On a serious note, I met this kid when I lived down in Myrtle Beach for 3 years. He was an awesome person, no surprise to see he would do something like this.

Kudos to Quigley, class act all around. (Michael Vick could learn something.)

    Good job!
