Glazer: Raiders won’t take Manziel at No. 5

Manziel AP

It’s still unclear who will take Johnny Manziel.  It’s clear that two teams in the top five won’t.

Earlier tonight, Jay Glazer of FOX reported that the Browns won’t take Manziel with the fourth overall pick in the draft.  Glazer has since reported that the Raiders won’t take Manziel with the No. 5 pick.

Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle recently shared a similar sentiment regarding the possibility of the Raiders taking any quarterback with the fifth pick, although Glazer’s report regarding Manziel seems to be more unequivocal.

It makes plenty of sense for the Raiders to not use the fifth pick on a quarterback.  They acquired a starter in Matt Schaub.  With G.M. Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen widely believed to be in win-now-or-else mode, why use the fifth pick on a guy who quite possibly would be on the bench this year?

It’s far better for the Raiders to pick players who will contribute right away.  If the Raiders don’t players who contribute this year, the franchise could have a new regime come 2015.

    Huge mistake.

The best pick for the future of the Raiders franchise would be Bortles at number 5. He appears to have a huge upside, not likely to be a bust like Russell or a bust in waiting like Manziel or Bridgewater.

Johnny manziel is the best qb in this draft. The Vikings should take the best qb in this draft. And it looks like hes sliding towards 8. Cmon jay say the bucs wont take him and hes all ours. Johnny is gonna be a VIKING!

    SKOL!

  4. sportzpig says: May 6, 2014 11:18 PM

Because the Browns and Raiders are gonna tell Jay Glazer their draft plan…child, please…

Electric Slide or the Johnny Wildcat Slide. The GM who risks his job on a high pick better have white-out for his resume.

He’s not gonna wanna be the guy who spends a 1st round pick on Runziel.

The Irony here of course is that we are going to have a new Regime anyhow, because both Reggie and Dennis Allen suck. And I am a Raider fan.

  7. raiderrob21 says: May 6, 2014 11:28 PM

Funny to see all the “EXPERTS” now saying this, when WE RAIDER fans have been telling you long ago they wouldn’t take Manziel.

    RAIDER NATION!!!!!!!!!!

  8. wayneflores says: May 6, 2014 11:33 PM

Matt could very well be on the bench quickly if he turns into pick 6 again.
Schaub is a bandaid approach and it can explode in their face. Reggie Flintstone claims they draft for the future. Look at his track record and how many stars he has passed on, let walk, didn’t sign etc… He alone will ruin the Raider Nations hope once more. Their draft board is probably a dart board, and the Raiders choose. ??? Another NFL wash out

I hope your right that the Raiders wont take Manziel. I like Manziel and I hope he lands with the Texans, although McNair is starting to look like an Al Davis type fool. He should stay out of the draft room.

btw- Manziel will be taken before the #4 pick.

This headline should be prefaced with “Duh, ”

Can we just get this draft over with, already?

  11. sd619tripleog says: May 6, 2014 11:43 PM

Doesn’t matter who the qb is, they’re going to be scared to go up against Philip Rivers and the Chargers twice a year.

  12. bpjensen says: May 7, 2014 12:07 AM

I think it is clear it is the Jaguars that will take Manziel at #3. This would explain why the Bucs are trying to get to #2.

  13. 1harrypairatesties says: May 7, 2014 12:14 AM

I think the Browns will take him at #4.

  14. Raider Jon says: May 7, 2014 12:32 AM

Manziel AND a new regime. It might be worth it.

  15. firerogergoodell says: May 7, 2014 12:38 AM

It’s funny that I actually still believe Glazer in the middle of all these blatant smokescreens. Maybe I’m an idiot but he’s earned my trust for some reason. Probably the only reporter I can say that about. Even Schefter’s accuracy has been way off lately.

  16. rayala3 says: May 7, 2014 12:54 AM

None of the qb’s go top ten. They’re all flawed. You don’t take on a chance on 6′ nothing Manziel in top ten. That little hop is gonna get blown up!

  17. mrneto72 says: May 7, 2014 1:28 AM

Man…..screw this, Shaub goes down, I wanna see Johnny football in action ..Glaze is smoking some good stuff. .puff puff give puff puff give. ….Manziel won’t be there at 5 anyway

  18. addict2sport says: May 7, 2014 2:21 AM

Yeah they won’t take him at 5. They’ll trade up and take him at 2 by giving away key picks in this year’s AND next year’s draft. Now THAT would be a Raider move.

  19. bornaraider60 says: May 7, 2014 4:32 AM

having being A RAIDERS fan my whole life REG and DA need to get their chit together this year!

  20. raiders4ever says: May 7, 2014 4:40 AM

every team wants there rookies to contribute now ..you make it sound like only the Raiders are in a must win now situation..Every team is or else they wouldnt be in this buisness…Belicheck isnt going to tell Kraft well I want this guy now so in 3 years he will be able to contribute but you still have to pay him 1st round salary ok mr kraft ?? thanks for understanding…you media people are something else..

  21. bhagos2 says: May 7, 2014 5:15 AM

    Tampa

  22. thetwilightsown says: May 7, 2014 5:33 AM

Manziel just doesn’t even seem like the kind of QB Olsen wants – still think if either Mack or Watkins fall, the odds on favorite is a trade down to 8-10.

    All of this waiting… SUCKS.

  23. officialgame says: May 7, 2014 7:30 AM

Which means they will probably take Manzeil at #5.

  24. eagleswin says: May 7, 2014 7:40 AM

This site spent the last few days all but guaranteeing that Manziel wouldn’t fall any lower than 4th. Are you going to spend the next 2 days speculating about him falling out of the first round?

  25. brocattosbasement says: May 7, 2014 8:07 AM

I’ll go out on a limb here and say that at least 4 out of the top five teams drafting won’t take Manziel.

  26. thegonz13 says: May 7, 2014 8:14 AM

Take heart, fellow posters. Another 36 hours of smokescreens, speculation and yapping from so-called “experts” and we’ll be able to resume life already in progress.

  27. aallgod says: May 7, 2014 8:35 AM

“It’s clear that two teams in the top 5 won’t.”

Sure, because everything right now is crystal clear.

  28. realraider2008 says: May 7, 2014 9:30 AM

Jay Glazer track record is real good id trust him.

  29. radrntn says: May 7, 2014 12:53 PM

in other words we are still speculating on each pick….because the media knows nothing what each team is going to do.

With that said I would love to see the raiders flip with the vikings for the viking 3rd and 4th rd picks if clowney and mack are off the board. Let the vike’s get their QB, and more than likely WR Evans, or one of the LT will be there at 8.

  30. platinumraider32 says: May 7, 2014 1:43 PM

First round picks are expected to contribute right away. Either as starters or getting considerable playing time. With the Schaub trade, taking a QB with the 5th pick or any pick in the 1st round would make absolutely no sense. Most teams don’t have the luxury to draft in the 1st round and have that player sit, especially the Raiders with Mark Davis and his “no more excuses” mantra.

If they draft a QB in the 1st round, they have pretty much signed their death certificate. You don’t pay a guy 8 mil to sit on the bench!

Get Mack if he’s there and if not, get Mike Evans. It’s that simple.

  31. theneedforspeeed says: May 7, 2014 2:17 PM

Well if Glazer says it, it must be true!! LOL!
