Report: Browns won’t draft Johnny Manziel with fourth pick

Alabama v Texas A&M Getty Images

It’s not draft time without some wildly conflicting reports about a team’s intentions.

On Monday, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported that Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel would not fall past the Browns with the fourth pick in the draft. Tuesday brought the exact opposite report from Jay Glazer of FOX Sports when he was asked about the Browns taking Manziel during an appearance on FOX Sports Radio. Glazer also shot down the notion that owner Jimmy Haslam is pushing to add Manziel to the roster.

“Let me just stop you right there, ok? ESPN has reported all night that the Cleveland Browns are taking Johnny Manziel, and I am here to tell you they are not,” Glazer said. “NFL Network — I know they had come out and said well Jimmy Haslam has told everybody in the room that he wants it to happen — that is not happening. In fact, it’s the other way. Jimmy Haslam has walked into the Brown’s draft room and said, ‘Hey guys, this is not what I do for a living, it’s what you do for a living. Whatever you do, I trust.’ There has not been some edict I guess. I have no idea where that came from, but that’s not happening.”

On Twitter, Glazer wrote that the Browns will not be taking Manziel with the fourth pick. They also have the 26th pick, of course, so there’s a chance that things could work out for a second chance at the Heisman Trophy winner.

Thanks for reiterating what everyone knew a month ago.

It’s Watkins, Mack, or a trade down.

  4. hwould says: May 6, 2014 8:09 PM

This report is spot on. I have no idea where ESPN was getting this crap that we were taking Manziel at 4. Ray Farmer doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who is keen on wasting draft picks.

I really hope he is right, makes the 25th spot the Chargers hold that much more valuable (assuming the Browns want to take a QB at 26.)

  18. superbowl48champs says: May 6, 2014 8:26 PM

This is the exact reason why the NFL failed pushing the draft back. The fans are sick of speculations and conflicting reports. Lets just move it back NFL and stop tying to fix something that isnt broken.

  19. campcouch says: May 6, 2014 8:27 PM

Really? Does it matter anymore? None of the football teams’ football ops personnel have walked over or called any sports or news contact and told them who’d they pick. There are no sources. I’m sure everyone in management values their hefty paychecks and would not want to jeopardize them by telling Glazer,ESPN,Fox,WMMS or whoever at thing about their plans. I’ll stop reading PFT until after the draft. Peace.

  20. dickshotdogs says: May 6, 2014 8:29 PM

These “Reports” are funny. I feel like I’m hiding around the corner from the living room, eves dropping on my daughters slumber party, and listening to them talk about boys. That’s what this reminds me of.

  21. kwjsb says: May 6, 2014 8:29 PM

If Watkins and Mack are gone, trade down a little and grab Evans, Now lets say you have Atlanta’s #6 & 2nd rounder or Tampa’s # 7 and second rounder You can then use the extra pick with the #26 to move back up and grab say Darqueze Dennard to book end with Haden and still have the #35 along with 2-3rds and 2-4ths.

  22. thevikingdefender says: May 6, 2014 8:29 PM

  27. hqudsi45 says: May 6, 2014 8:35 PM

Glazer is almost always rght on these issues. I’ll never forget in 2007 that he mocked Ted Ginn Jr to the Dolphins at 9th overall and I thought there was no way in hell that happened. Lo and behold… And in the 08 draft, he said the Ravens had a deal to move back in place if Matt Ryan wasn’t available, and they in fact moved back. I believe him before the others

  37. thevikingdefender says: May 6, 2014 8:48 PM

Johnny manziel knows his best shot is in Minnesota with norv turner and a star veteran player like Adrian Peterson behind him to help him along the way and with all sorts of weapons in Patterson, Jennings, Rudolph, Simpson and a great offensive line to protect him.

  60. jrob23 says: May 6, 2014 9:58 PM

    a) Glazer is an idiot
    b) I refuse to believe that three teams either pass or fail to trade their pick to a team that wants Manziel. No way in hell he is falling past 2. Zero chance. Either HOU takes him or deals the pick, or STL does. Either way, there are too many crappy QB in the league for teams without one to let him slip

  64. deinoslogos says: May 6, 2014 10:07 PM

Nobody should consider Manziel in the first round, let alone at 4. These gimmick quarterbacks never work. Can he consistently throw from the pocket? If not you’d be a fool to take him in the 1st.

THAT means Haslam will let the football guys decide….NOT that they will not pick Johnny Football. Farmer and Pettine might LOVE Manziel…their campaign of mis-information has been expertly done….NO ONE really knows who they want and won’t until Thursday night. All of this is a waste of time.

    Translation in Brownspeak:
“We will draft Manziel unless Tampa doesn’t trade up to the #2 spot.”

Problem.. the the Bucs are going to trade up to #2 to get Manziel.

Who exactly is the Browns starting QB?

Problem is for all here… the Jags are going to take JFF at #3 unless…. ;)

  78. swagger52 says: May 7, 2014 7:00 AM

Given allt he experience that the brownies have earned by getting beaten by Flacco and Roethlesberger every year, they are going to draft a QB that is the size of a CB. They will draft Bortles.

Call it the swagger bulk principle.

  79. swagger52 says: May 7, 2014 7:01 AM

Noone knows who the browns are drafting and it is driving NFL network and ESPN nuts. I LOVE IT. Farmer is a genious, Browns have been the talk for 2 months not sending scouts or gm to prodays, not talkingto qb’s at combine. This is one of the best chess matches of all time with the media.

  83. sean222 says: May 7, 2014 9:37 AM

These mock drafts have given us Brotles, Bridgewater, Manzel, Watkins, yet we have not been linked with Mack. If someone out there can find a source that says Mack is going at 4, I can rest knowing the Browns will be taking someone at 4.

  84. detroitdawg says: May 7, 2014 9:41 AM

Everybody can’t wait for the draft to be over so the ridiculous reports will end. The NFL moved it back for two week for this exact reason. The draft has definitely overshadowed the NBA and the Nhl playoffs. From them it’s a win for us its having to listen to this garbage more than we should. It will all end in a couple days when these so called “experts” are proven wrong like they are annually.

  85. cincyalldaway says: May 7, 2014 1:09 PM

This is the same team that drafted a QB with teeth longer than a 20 year old horse in Weeden. They take Johnny Football at #4, GUARANTEED!
