Report: Johnny Manziel would prefer not to play in Jacksonville

manziel AP

If the Jaguars draft Johnny Manziel tomorrow night, he may not be thrilled about his new home.

That’s the word from Don Banks of Sports Illustrated, who reports that Manziel isn’t wild about the idea of landing in Jacksonville.

According to Banks, that’s not a matter of having anything against the Jaguars. It’s simply about the location. Jacksonville is one of the smallest markets in the NFL, and Johnny Football would apparently prefer to play for a higher-profile team.

Interestingly, the same report says that Manziel’s family doesn’t think Houston is the best fit for Manziel. Apparently the family believes that staying in his home state would make it harder for Manziel to make the transition from Texas A&M to the NFL.

Of course, the Jaguars and Texans probably don’t care very much what Manziel or his family would prefer. If they think Manziel is the right person to lead their franchise going forward, they’ll draft him. And in both places, the fans would be thrilled to welcome Manziel, regardless of whether he’s thrilled about going there.

Clearly Manziel is someone who has never been told “no” in his life.

  12. brianincbus says: May 7, 2014 4:40 PM

You can add his name to the other 53 players on their roster.

  13. wawa33 says: May 7, 2014 4:41 PM

Wait until he lands in Cleveland…will that be ok with Tender manziel?

  14. drs76109 says: May 7, 2014 4:41 PM

Which is precisely why I hope Jax picks him. Enough already. Can we get thing over with, for crying out loud?

  15. schmitty2 says: May 7, 2014 4:41 PM

Well this does nothing to ease the talk about him being a “Me-first” guy. How about just being happy to fulfill a dream of being a pro football player?

  16. dblockdedicated says: May 7, 2014 4:41 PM

    If you are the Jags.

You have Sammy Watkins sitting there and Johnny Manziel. Chad Henne did a pretty good job last year. Why on earth would you give up the possible trio of Sammy Watkins, Cecil Shorts, and Justin Blackmon. On top of that they have Ace Sanders. That would be nasty.

    Or Johnny football at 6’0.

  17. Frazier28/7 says: May 7, 2014 4:41 PM

Everyone has an opinion about who you work for and what city you live in. But you go where the money is. Pretty sure Manziel feels the same.

  21. duvaltillidie904 says: May 7, 2014 4:42 PM

I don’t believe the overall consensus in Jax is that we want an entitled, spoiled brat, who will be hurt after just a few hits in the NFL. Thanks anyway!

  22. jeremycrowhurst says: May 7, 2014 4:43 PM

You’re right, Johnny. You’ll be much better off in Oakland or Minnesota. What could POSSIBLY go wrong in either of those places?

    Cleveland is?

  31. Brown Anchor says: May 7, 2014 4:45 PM

You’re getting ready to be paid what MOST people wont make in their lifetime, to do something millions of people wish they had an opportunity to do, and on the night before you officially get your “Dream Job” you and/or your family is complaining about where it’ll be at???

  39. thestrategyexpert says: May 7, 2014 4:49 PM

Maybe the players should just be ranked overall and the highest ranking player that is willing to go to whatever team is on the clock is who that team gets with that pick. We can debate that system with all the extra time next year when the draft gets pushed back even further just to give us something to think about!

  40. 619sdfan4life says: May 7, 2014 4:50 PM

Eli manning 2.0…..just stay home manziel. You prob won’t be able to stay sober or out of trouble anyways. Who cares where you land. If you want to silence the critics where ever you land you should be grateful. #selfEntitledBrat

  41. 80sbroncofan says: May 7, 2014 4:50 PM

He should talk to the 30 quarterbacks that played in Cleveland the last 10 years. I think they all would have preferred Jacksonville.

  42. jediviking76 says: May 7, 2014 4:50 PM

Oh Boo Fricken hoo go cry me a river Johnny Football you should be lucky to be drafted period no matter who wants you

  43. jeepguy14 says: May 7, 2014 4:51 PM

And I’d prefer to make millions of dollars while working 6 months out of the year playing a game. Suck it up Johnny.

  44. thelastwordyaheard says: May 7, 2014 4:52 PM

what if they offer to rename the city Johnsonville?.. that seems much more appropriate anyway

  45. purpleguy says: May 7, 2014 4:52 PM

On the other side of things, if he sucks playing for the Jags, very few will notice.

  46. ampats says: May 7, 2014 4:53 PM

I think he is missing the point that several years the Jags will be in LA or possibly London.

  47. cpo187 says: May 7, 2014 4:53 PM

If Blackmon could get his ass in line, Manziel-Blackmon-Cecil Shorts could be a nice trio for years to come.

  48. r8rsfan says: May 7, 2014 4:55 PM

Seriously wonder if he even said anything like this. It’s pretty much open season for the media to fabricate and pontificate.

  49. 12444uggg says: May 7, 2014 4:55 PM

He’s got no leverage and this is time of year for serious grey propaganda. Who know’s what’s true?

  50. pfatl says: May 7, 2014 4:55 PM

Not disclosed by Mr. Banks – the source was in the Cleveland front office.

  51. drunkadamschefter says: May 7, 2014 4:56 PM

    Johnny Cleveland!

  52. jmblosser82 says: May 7, 2014 4:57 PM

If I were making the call I would pass on him. After his rookie contract is up, assuming he doesn’t get his confidence crushed, if John didn’t want to be there he will either walk or cash in and cripple the team again. Find someone you like and that wants to be there and you will get a more productive player.

  53. uglydingo says: May 7, 2014 4:58 PM

Looks like Jax is not going to be the house that Johnny builds. To make a statement like this he clearly expects to be drafted very early.
Although it would be a real pity to see him sliding down the Draft on Thursday after doing so well in the Mock Drafts;-)

  54. johnnycamparm says: May 7, 2014 5:00 PM

    Nice smoke screen Cleveland ;)

  55. jolink653 says: May 7, 2014 5:05 PM

Jacksonville would be doing themselves a favor by listening to his family. A lot better players on the board at #3 than Manziel

  56. kd75 says: May 7, 2014 5:07 PM

You mean he doesn’t want to play in London before he hits free agency…

  57. thegreatgabbert says: May 7, 2014 5:08 PM

He’s hoping to go to Nashville so he can duel banjos in his free time.

  58. tedmurph says: May 7, 2014 5:08 PM

So, it’s not so much about the team, it’s about the market where he can make the most off-field money and get the most attention?. Good luck to whomever drafts him. Only the PMnnings, JElways and ALucks of the world get to pick and choose. Just hope you stay in the top 10, prove you can play in the NFL and be happy with that.

  59. keithdylan says: May 7, 2014 5:09 PM

Espn reports he has said teams will regret not picking him. So will he go easy on Jacksonville in the future for fulfilling his wish?

  60. villanyc says: May 7, 2014 5:11 PM

I lived in Jax for 10 years and couldn’t wait to get out. Been living in New York City for 2 years and now I can’t wait to go back to Jax.

  61. seahawkfanfrom1970s says: May 7, 2014 5:12 PM

Who does he think he is, Elway?

  62. fstpstr says: May 7, 2014 5:12 PM

No way… He wouldn’t be stupid enough to float an idea like this. If he gets drafted at #3, he makes a substantial amount of cash. It’s all about the money, not the location.

    #smokescreen

  63. just4given says: May 7, 2014 5:13 PM

The Elway/Eli Manning syndrome. It’s a draft people. That’s the process that is in place. With millions of dollars at stake – Jacknsonville would suit me just fine.

  64. mdobrasz says: May 7, 2014 5:14 PM

    Tim Tebow 2.0

  65. gsomatt says: May 7, 2014 5:15 PM

Dynamic player with lots of upside potential. That being said, I hope he’s not around when the Packers are on the board.

If the Packers stick with the “Best Available” philosophy, they might take him. Then what? Trade bait?

  66. zack2482 says: May 7, 2014 5:16 PM

Would he prefer to play for the Browns. Ugh! By the way, I will be glad when the draft is over. I have heard enough about the Browns to last me a lifetime.

But this is the time of the year when you actually hear about them. Maybe they will finally do something this year because I can’t stand the Stealers.

  67. deflateddome says: May 7, 2014 5:17 PM

It would be funny if he fell into the second round…

  68. dontbugmeonsundays says: May 7, 2014 5:18 PM

  70. weepingjebus says: May 7, 2014 5:19 PM

So you’re saying he won’t Play 60 each week in Jacksonville?

  71. chargerdillon says: May 7, 2014 5:22 PM

To those who said don’t be another Eli. Last time I checked it worked out pretty good for Eli and he’s just as overrated as Manziel is. In fact Manziel might be A LOT better than Eli is.

Eli isn’t Peyton, but Eli also has 2 rings. Just sayin

  72. speicher145 says: May 7, 2014 5:22 PM

  75. bigearl61 says: May 7, 2014 5:23 PM

Hey Jacksonville, sign me to a 3 year 2million contract and will never miss a game, practice, meet and greet, wine tasting.. NOTHING

  76. stellarperformance says: May 7, 2014 5:24 PM

This guy is too small for the NFL. Great college quarterback though. But college athletes that excel…in college…are a dime a dozen. I would like to see what Minnesota does if he falls to #8. I would love it if they took him.

  77. coltzfan166 says: May 7, 2014 5:24 PM

If he still wants to be the first rookie QB to win the Super Bowl, he knows it wouldn’t happen in Jacksonville.

  78. robdolphins says: May 7, 2014 5:25 PM

In a few minutes, a headline saying Manziel denies previous report.

  79. drsummeroff says: May 7, 2014 5:25 PM

So would he be better off in Cleveland? St. Louis? Oakland? Or worst of all – playing for the Vikings? Talk about a no win scenario.

  80. irishinyourface says: May 7, 2014 5:25 PM

no one wants to play for that clown organization

  81. vdogg says: May 7, 2014 5:25 PM

    Jacksonville also wanted Tebow…..

  82. djdvd says: May 7, 2014 5:26 PM

Sliding down the draft boards and already have personality/off the field issues?

This just in – beggars can be choosers. How about focus on being a great NFL player and the rest will come. Green Bay certainly isn’t New York but somehow winners made it a hell of a franchise huh?

  83. deetrain11 says: May 7, 2014 5:33 PM

So when he went on his media blitz, saying that if he
didn’t go #1…..he would be happy playing anywhere.
It was all a big front! Big surprise!!!

  84. ngarren13 says: May 7, 2014 5:36 PM

would love for all the teams to ignore him and Jax takes him with their pick in the 2nd rd. Unfortunately he and the NFLPA could sue the NFL if all the teams ignored him the entire draft which would cost him alot. Go from potential #1 overall to undrafted. You can tell it’s his agent at work here. To say the day before the draft you aren’t wanting to go to a team??

  85. guitarfreak21 says: May 7, 2014 5:39 PM

If I were him, I wouldn’t play for Jacksonville, Oakland, or Cleveland.

  86. jpb12 says: May 7, 2014 5:50 PM

    He’s just like Tebow

  87. giantjag says: May 7, 2014 5:56 PM

Hope you enjoy Cleveland or Oakland. Good riddance Johnny.

  88. boltjolt says: May 7, 2014 6:09 PM

In otherwords its all about indorsements and marketing himself. Sure who cares about just helping a team and being the best player you can be

  89. boltjolt says: May 7, 2014 6:13 PM

Maybe he won’t pout like that batch Eli if they do pick him.

  90. billytodd2013blbaad says: May 7, 2014 6:15 PM

be nice to see an over rated player like this who thinks he can determine who does and doesn’t draft him fall to the 7th round and miss out on that big payday he’s expecting.

  91. firerogergoodellnow says: May 7, 2014 6:17 PM

Jacksonville has beaches, warm weather and no state tax. Why would he pass it up?

  92. ballboy48 says: May 7, 2014 6:30 PM

Stop comparing Tebow and Manziel. Two way different players. Tebow’s accuracy was horrendous.

  93. pierrepoint1 says: May 7, 2014 6:37 PM

Why would a team risk a 1st round draft pick on a player who can simply sit out the year, and try his luck next year in the draft?

  94. tictoccpthook says: May 7, 2014 6:44 PM

Johnny Football should stay at home and watch how the pros do it. Big head, small body, no real experience.

  95. drfeelyouup says: May 7, 2014 7:05 PM

Why would he want to play for Jax when he can play for Cleveland? Duh, no brainer

  96. thommyberlin says: May 7, 2014 7:27 PM

As if. Unless he’s still there in the third round, I don’t think playing for the Jags will be much of an issue…

  97. campcouch says: May 7, 2014 7:32 PM

Laugh all you want but PFT,HBT,PBT,Yahoo and ESPN seem to pump out more articles about the sorry teams in Cleveland than the successful ones elsewhere. Must be the fascination with sold out stadiums for losing franchises.
