At No. 25, Chargers take TCU cornerback Jason Verrett

Jason Verrett AP

The Chargers desperately needed a cornerback, and in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft, they got one.

With the 25th pick, the Chargers selected cornerback Jason Verrett from Texas Christian University.

Verrett played very well at TCU was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in both 2012 and 2013, and he solidified his status as a first-round pick with a good showing at the Scouting Combine. Verrett is only 5-foot-9 and 189 pounds, but other than size he has everything teams look for in a corner.

In San Diego, Verrett will be expected to start right away. Currently Steve Williams, a fifth-round pick last year, is listed as a starter on the depth chart, and Verrett should push Williams aside and start in San Diego.

I am okay with this pick. We needed to get better in the secondary, and I think we did.

    Midget corners are in demand.

In the brief footage… Verrett doesn’t impress me in coverage… but… he appears to use his speed well to correct his mistakes. His small size makes him pretty useless in RUSH Defense.

Wright and Richard Marshall are the two starting corners. Williams is penciled in as the slot corner.

This guy is an upgrade by default and that’s not saying much.

Still happy to have an upgrade though!

I like it, he’ll be solid. Dude has the quickest feet and ran a 4.38 and had one of the highest vertical jumps. Telesco knows what he’s doing

Good pick, and I’d guess about 80% of all Chargers fans had Verrett mocked to the Chargers. Dennard would’ve been a great pick, who went the pick before Verrett would’ve been better, but overall Chargers fans are HAPPY!

1 pick away from Dennard. He would have been perfect, damn bengals they got a steal

Most predictable pick of the night after Clowney. San Diego’s 1st round board probably didn’t include any positions other than DB.

Verrett may be small, but he is a football player. I’ve heard that he has been tested against taller players at TCU and held his ground very well. I think he can handle the perimeter outside Wright, but I think he could give Welker some problems when Denver comes knocking. I like this pick.
