Cowboys skip Johnny Football to take Zack Martin

Manziel Getty Images

The Cowboys had their chance, and they passed on the “glory hole” for a more immediate need.

With Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel sitting there in their laps, the Cowboys took Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin from Notre Dame with the 16th overall pick.

It’s more of a need, and makes far more sense for the Cowboys, but it’s a lot less fun.

Martin’s a safe and solid pick for a team that hasn’t made enough of them.

He’s just not much fun.

Mistake. When Kyle Orton is qb in week 3…picking for need is a mistake…

Jerry Jones is getting sane in his old age.

  16. jjackwagon says: May 8, 2014 9:58 PM

Cowboys headed to 8-8 again. Romo will never get you to the SB.

  17. wayneflores says: May 8, 2014 9:58 PM

Wow, who is he going to protect?

  18. bucrightoff says: May 8, 2014 9:59 PM

See you in the 2nd round Johnny.

  19. douchebigelow says: May 8, 2014 9:59 PM

    Can he play defensive tackle?

  20. wayneflores says: May 8, 2014 10:00 PM

Romo has never been the answer

  21. kevpft says: May 8, 2014 10:00 PM

Wow. When Romo’s gone in another couple years, this is going to be looked back on as a really interesting moment.

It’s been a surprising draft so far, but I’m guessing Dallas won’t have any of their top QB options left by their next pick.

  22. fordmandalay says: May 8, 2014 10:00 PM

I’m calling Derek Carr for the Cardinals, and Johnny goes to the Browns with their next pick.

“Notre Dame offensive lineman Zach Martin from Notre Dame”

You forgot to mention where he went to school.

  24. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: May 8, 2014 10:01 PM

Martin with alligator arms and OL can be found in the 2nd. But there is only one Johnny Football and he will make sure Jerry regrets this pick.

  25. ralphwilsonisrich says: May 8, 2014 10:01 PM

Bone your own state star, how dare you. Love the look of thec owboy fans when Manziel was taken.

  26. kamthechancellor says: May 8, 2014 10:03 PM

Jerry Jones stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

  27. fatguystrangler says: May 8, 2014 10:03 PM

This Manziel freefall is approaching Quinn and Rodgers level. I feel bad for him only because the media fawned over him to the EXTREME. It’s got to be humbling at this point.

  28. restorativejusticeprogram says: May 8, 2014 10:04 PM

The best quaterback in the league is AR of Green Bay and he did just fine dropping down.

  29. jollyjoker2 says: May 8, 2014 10:04 PM

I would of took Johnny over a second rate lineman. I am sure he is good – just not great.

  30. trefkennedy says: May 8, 2014 10:04 PM

Maybe we’ll get him in the 2nd round

As a REDSKINS fan, that’s a solid pick by the Cowboys…..:(

  33. jkast808 says: May 8, 2014 10:13 PM

he’s gonna come into the league with a Chip Kelly on his shoulder!

  34. larrydavid7000 says: May 8, 2014 10:16 PM

Rumor is they tied jj up and put him in a dark room kicking and screaming. That is how these Idiots did not pick Jinny Football.

  35. cueghost says: May 8, 2014 10:18 PM

Solid pick… now give us 6 straight on the other side of the ball Jerry.

  36. anarchopurplism says: May 8, 2014 10:18 PM

    Interesting.

Apparently Jerruh gets locked out of locker rooms & draft war rooms too!

  37. guachosporlife says: May 8, 2014 10:19 PM

Yep….Cowboys will score 35 points a game, only to lose 35-42 and then blame Romo.

  38. thereyougo2 says: May 8, 2014 10:23 PM

Please, No. A couple of real good DBs still on board for the birds.

  39. doggeatdogg says: May 8, 2014 10:30 PM

Johnny said it would be great to play for the Cowboys. Maybe he sensed he was going to drop this low. Wow. I still don’t know why JM is still available.

  40. gammynomnom says: May 8, 2014 11:55 PM

In the future, if Johnny pans out and does well, the Cowboys will be the only team who passed on him. Too bad for Johnny going to Cleveland though.

  41. xcflqb7 says: May 9, 2014 12:10 AM

So the Browns end up with Johnny Football and the Jerrahs end up with Brandon Weeden ….

  42. slugbaitspace says: May 9, 2014 12:20 AM

Right about now, Jerry is regaining consciousness and saying, “Wow, I have a huge lump on the back of my head. Dang, that smarts! Hey, did we get Johnny?”

  43. thephinatic says: May 9, 2014 6:13 AM

    “Crap” -Dolphins fans.

  44. peymax1693 says: May 9, 2014 8:11 AM

This was a win/win for Jones.
If Manziell is a bust he can say that he is the smartest guy in the room because he didn’t allow emotion to factor into his decision.

If Manziell is a star, he can say that he wanted to pick him but was talked out of it by the rest of the personnel dept., which would just reinforce the idea in Jerry’s mind that he is the smartest guy in the room.

  45. nou04 says: May 9, 2014 9:53 AM

“For a team that has just not made enough of them” Solid, safe picks.

How soon people forget. Outside of trading up for Claiborne 2, years ago and even though he is pushing bust territory, the jury is out on that, Dallas has drafted pretty safely that past several years.

Tyron Smith is one of the best young left tackles in the game. Dez Bryant was a risk for off the field problems, but his talent was undeniable and has been to the Pro Bowl as well as Smith. Last year, Dallas was bashed for trading back and taking the C Frederick. He made the all rookie team and they got a solid WR with the trade.

The 2009, draft was a debacle for the ages, but get over it. Their drafting since then has been very solid. Their free agency spending and holding on to aging players has been the problem.

  46. nou04 says: May 9, 2014 10:02 AM

I am impressed with all of the “expert” opinions in here.

Half are saying Dallas would regret if they took Johnny, the other half is saying they will regret it if they took him. Why aren’t you all a bunch of GM’s?

Would D line have been great? Sure, but they would have been hung if they “reached” for a D lineman. This is going to help give Dallas one of the best and YOUNG O lines in the NFL. If you can win at the line of scrimmage, your odds go way up to win the game.

At least I saw one Redskins fan mention what a strong pick they made. It must have hurt, but at least he has some integrity and honesty.

  47. vegasdestroyer says: May 9, 2014 12:16 PM

When Romo gets hurt…again and the”boys have to rely upon a Browns reject, all the “experts” will lie and say they always knew it was a mistake for Jerry to take a mistake by the lake.

  48. dcstinks says: May 9, 2014 1:19 PM

And the Cowboys pick.. Not Johnny.. Lol..

    HOW Bout the Cowboys!!

    Another season at 8-8..
Keep up the great work Skeletor!

    I hope you live forever!!
