Giants select LSU receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with 12th pick

Wide receiver Victor Cruz hoped the New York Giants would add another receiver to the roster to replace Hakeem Nicks.

The front office obliged with their first selection of the draft. The Giants selected LSU receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with the 12th overall pick in the draft.

Nicks was a dud last season and the Giants offense struggled as a whole. While the team has some proven complementary receivers in Rueben Randle and Mario Manningham, the Giants needed to add another big-play threat for Eli Manning.

Beckham should bring a dynamic threat to New York’s offense and be a contributor on special teams, potentially as a punt returner as well.

The Giants may have also been interested in North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron as well had he still been on the board, but he was selected two picks earlier by the Detroit Lions.

  1. This move makes no sense at all.. I was watching Giants season last year.. WRs wasn’t a problem.. it was Offense Linemans were the problem and Manning didnt have time to throw.. They should had picked up Martin and replace beatty with him… Yeah, they need WR but can pick up in 2nd round.. O-line is more impt than WR… sad..

  2. Would’ve like to grab Donald at this pick but can’t hate that we grabbed a weapon for Eli. My ideal 1st and 2nd round was grab Donald then Allen Robinson in the 2nd.

Needless to say, I’m happy with our pick.

  3. It would appear this pick is to compliment whatever system the new OC has started to put in place. It says a lot about the direction he will want to go. This kid has some skills. Wouldn’t be suprised to see him being used like Sydney Rice with his size. I was hoping for a lineman in all honesty.

  4. Woulda been Lewan if Titans didn’t swipe him… But doesn’t seem Giants had Martin rated as high. Beckham will be dynamic alongside Cruz.

  5. Crap pick! Can’t throw if you are running for your life or on your back. Reese blew another draft. Loaded with WR’s, but only so many big men on the planet with good footwork. Gonna suck again this year, just brought in a bunch of never was and rehabs for the OL. PITIFUL!

  6. I like the Giants as my 2nd choice for NFC, but they are literally as disappointing as my Dolphins… It was tough to see Lewan off the board right before but Zack Martin or even Donald. I am not saying Beckham is not solid, but Eli can’t throw to him or Cruz when is is running for his life or on his back! Too bad because the Eagles will win the Division by default now

  7. Highest WR pick since the great Ike Hilliard (that guy played until his last limb fell off). I wanted the solid OLineman or the dominant DT but we went speed and system. Manning, Cruz and MacAdoo all wanted this guy and Coughlin started as a receivers coach. That’s a potent lobby inside the building. They got their man. By all accounts Beckham is the real deal – he’s just not an OLineman. But he’s a serious receiver. Now they all gotta show us something.

  8. We gather here today to lay to rest Eli manning though you brought us two super bowl rings the front office didn’t think that protecting your blind side was important

  9. there was no OT’s worthy of the 12th pick.. Martin is NOT a LT. He is a stud Guard and you don’t take a guard with the 12th pick,, they got the best guy left om their board.. tomorrow, Im hoping Austin Sefarian jenkins or the guy from ND at TE and or the LT from Bama will be available at the 12th pick of the 2nd rd.. if they get the LT, they gotta get a TE in the 3rd.. We needed another WR for sure.. they got one, now, lets hope the bama Tackle falls or they get Amaro or Jenkins at TE, then Ill be psyched..

  10. I guess these people who said Eli can’t throw while running didn’t pay attention during the Free Agent because they helped out the line then.

  11. Giants looking like the Skins in FA and now grabbing a WR when they needed offensive line badly. Lol. Eli is set to throw a ton more picks!

  12. We grabbed an immediate starter on the outside.. He was the last of the top tier WRs on the board – while there are plenty of starting OL and DL in the 2nd round.

In the end, this made the most sense. Plus, Macadoo is going to have Eli getting rid of the ball quickly, which solidifies this pick even more.

  13. ASK YOURSELF THIS REESE IS BECKEM A NUMBER ONE AND WILL BECKEM EVEN START?WE JUST GOT A KICK RETURN GUY WITH THE FIRST PICK IN THE DRAFT.MARTIN WAS THE PLAY HERE AND YOU BLEW IT.NOW

    second round pics for giants
    GUARD FROM STANFORD
    DT FROM FLORIDA ST
    GAURD FROM UCLA
    TACKLE FROM NEVADA
    TE FROM WASHINGTON
    RUNNING BACK FROM OHIO ST
    RUNNING BACK FROM LSU
    GUARD FROM STANFORD
    TE FROM NORTE DAME
    CENTER FROM USC

    DONT BLOW IT REESE

  14. As I see it, this was not an indictment on Reuben Randall. If the Giants only used 2 WR’s, and seldom needed the WR3, then maybe it would, but the reality is that the Giants use 3 WR sets, and starters get hamstring issues and muscle pulls, and then must rely on the WR3 to start in a pinch, and perhaps the Giants felt that Jernigan’s late season production was the exception, rather than the norm, or that Manningham may not be fully ready to resume his prior WR3 duties. That’s why the Giants kept saying “NFL ready” in their descriptions of Beckum, as they *need* him to be ready, asap, as the WR3, as the slot WR, or perhaps to start on the line, and move Cruz to the slot. The bottom line is that a 2nd or 3rd round WR might not be ready, whereas Beckum is, and thus the Giants would enter the season, rolling the dice with who they have as the WR3.

  15. The Giants are successful when they have a “big” receiver that demands double teaming from the defense because if the defense does not double then the receiver (Burress or Nicks) would simply use their size and go up and grab the ball.

Instead of following this plan that has led to multiple super bowl wins, they draft Beckham who does not fit that mold at all. I’m sure Beckham is fast and is a great route runner, but he is in the same mold as Cruz and Randle is not the type of guy to demand a double team, so what the hell did we really get here? A guy that is the same size and faster than Cruz/Jernigan/Randle?

Unless they could get their hands on Evans or Benjamin, why not draft Donald who would have helped out tremendously on a defensive line that is a fraction of it’s former self?

  16. Rueben Randall: 6-2.
    Victor Cruz: 6-0.
    Manningham: 6-0.
    Beckham: 5-11.

    Kellen Davis: 6-7.

The “big target” could come in the form of a pass catching TE. Davis is more of a run blocker.

  17. Experts who live and breath football like the pick. He’s been compared to past greats like Isaac Bruce, Reggie Wayne, etc.

Best route runner in the draft. Great hands. Good kid with strong bloodlines.

Nice pick by NY – BIG BLUE!!

  18. My Bucs should have drafted him instead of Evans everyone down here is buy the twin towers bs lol and the giants would have been better off with Evans because they lack a possession receiver lol

  19. Good Pick. They filled a need, and thats the point of the draft, to fill needs. The giants clearly did not value the O-linemen available as highly as they did Beckham jr. If the Giants are anything, its predictable in the draft. They will always take the best available in a NEED area. So them taking Beckham tells you they didnt believe what was available on the line was more valuable than Beckham, so they took Beckham.
