Raiders take Khalil Mack at No. 5

Khalil AP

The Oakland Raiders have bolstered their defensive with former University at Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack as the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Mack is a very talented playmaker — some consider him the best prospect in the entire draft — and Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie had to be thrilled that he was still available when the Raiders’ number came up.

Although there was some talk that the Raiders loved former Texas A&M receiver Mike Evans as a potential first-round pick, Mack is almost universally regarded as the better choice there.

The Raiders haven’t been a good team lately, but they just got a good young player — the kind of player around whom a team can build a defense.

No reach. That is a solid pick.

  2. rukkus1 says: May 8, 2014 8:46 PM

    My condolences Mr Mack

Called that one. Lots of needs for the Raiders.

Nice Job Reggie. Build the franchise around a LB. Manziel was right there and you passed? At least the #RaiderNation knows this will be your final year as GM. You hung your reputation on Matt Schaub and Khalil Mack. Rolando Mcfail 2.0?

  5. goraidersgospurs says: May 8, 2014 8:49 PM

Wanted Watkins or Mack, soo I am happy with this!!!

  6. bigshirk says: May 8, 2014 8:49 PM

as a raider fan i could not be happier.

  7. kevpft says: May 8, 2014 8:49 PM

Poor Mack. He deserved a better team than this.

I remember the same things being said when Oakland drafted Rolando McClain and the Seahawks drafted Aaron Curry…

  9. coldwater32301 says: May 8, 2014 8:51 PM

Best available and great pick… Going to work well with with the vets in on defense…Indeed…

  10. thraiderskin says: May 8, 2014 8:52 PM

Yawn… mack doesn’t change anything… a big wr would have. Solid pick, but yawn.

  11. rodh32340 says: May 8, 2014 8:54 PM

His stock was rising during month of May…he can thank Goodell for being picked 5th.

  12. gdublud says: May 8, 2014 8:55 PM

I don’t doubt that Mack is a solid player. The raiders need a new stadium and a LB isn’t going to get the tarps taken off the upper deck so they can sell out in a legit manner. Johnny Football would.

It didn’t take long for the whiners to chime in.
Can’t wait to introduce Mr. Mack to Rivers, Manning, and what’s his name in KC.

  14. ohiobears says: May 8, 2014 8:56 PM

…. Same things that were said about McClain after drafting him.

saw his highlights a few times, all against smaller
schools, as a Raider fan I hope it works out, let him prove it on the field

Congrats Oakland Raiders for drafting Rolando McClain 2.0.

  20. robgilman says: May 8, 2014 9:05 PM

The difference between Mack and McLain/Curry is Mack is light years ahead in intelligence and a harder worker. Plays like a wild man. Good pick Reggie

  21. bittersportspills says: May 8, 2014 9:05 PM

Picking guys like this is how your team gets better …

I loved ESPN’s discussion of Mack to the Raiders. Mack went from a guy worthy of being selected 1st overall, to he looks like a different player when he’s on the inside, and he isn’t good in coverage.

  22. kuhawks2010 says: May 8, 2014 9:14 PM

The only time I seen this guy play was against Ohio State and he looked very good.

  23. aldavis4president says: May 8, 2014 9:17 PM

That’s what they said about Rolando McClain?? Didn’t know Mack was an ILB. I LOVE THE PICK!! Justin tuck, Woodley, Moore, Antonio Smith, cwood, tyvone. manning rivers and Alexis better start working on their scrambling YYEEEEE!! #RAIDERNATION

  24. tinbender2000 says: May 8, 2014 9:19 PM

Every time he thinks of Mack sacking Rivers Humbolt pees a little bit.

  25. raider8er says: May 8, 2014 9:20 PM

    I’m pleased as punch.

  26. keithdylan says: May 8, 2014 9:23 PM

Not sure how his NFL career will go, but can people please stop going to the default stock line that the Raiders make crazy picks. I still see lazy writers writing as if Al is still the GM. When a player many say is the best athlete and has the most upside falls to you at 5, you have to take that guy and they did. This pick is not a reach nor a stupid pick.

Safest pick in the draft. I’d like to see the Raiders relevant again…if it weren’t for their Neanderthal fans.

Weird I think I heard Mayock say that he had 3 INT’s with 2 Pick 6’s and covers like a Safety.

Mack was a great pick…he flat out looks the part..he looks like a nasty mean playmaker and Raiders need to get back to that style of the free agent veterans we signed to the defense this was truly a great pick..great job Reggie so far so good cant wait til we get started..GO RAIDERS !!

Welcome to the Raider Nation Khalil!!!!

  32. isaiah007 says: May 8, 2014 10:06 PM

Great pick by the Raiders. We’ll said by someone earlier talking about current Raiders and what they were the last few years under Al. Their isn’t one guy involved now that was making decisions when Big Al was here. Not one, yet lazy writers continue to talk like the same people are making decisions. SMH!

  33. typinggibberish says: May 8, 2014 10:28 PM

And the Chargers draft anyone that might have “CB” attached to their name.

  34. r8dernation says: May 8, 2014 10:37 PM

Thank you Rams and Jags for doing what they did. I can’t believe Mack fell to us!

  35. nativeraider says: May 8, 2014 11:08 PM

So excited! Mack and Sio will be beast, plus Roach plugging the middle. Sio and Mack will benefit BIG from Woodleys experience. Now I just hope we can get Jernigan in the 2nd round.

  36. neuf1948 says: May 8, 2014 11:12 PM

It’s just the start of good things to come.

  37. crise40g says: May 8, 2014 11:13 PM

Khalil May have not been the sexy pick but he was the best pick. Defense wins Championships! Have we not learned what it takes to beat the Donkeys from the Seahawks?

  38. westcoastraider says: May 8, 2014 11:22 PM

Geeze… All this hate, smells kinda like fear…

To all you who say manziel, if they had taken him And he bombed you’d be on here bashing Reggie Mac left and right, this was the right pick for us… One Nation

  39. r8erfanj says: May 9, 2014 12:52 AM

Reggie: now let go get Louis Nix III to bolster the line please! Great first pick.

  40. hawkscup2013 says: May 9, 2014 1:16 AM

    Love the Pick!

  41. badmoonrison says: May 9, 2014 2:51 AM

I love this pick because Im a believer in building defense first and foremost and spending early picks on the right defensive players in the draft ala the Ravens in many years past as well as the Seapigeons as of late. Take pressure off your offense and just allow a punishing defense to literally take the will to play from the opposing offense. As Arnold once said “To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women”. Welcome to the Silver and Black Mr. Mack!

  42. jdphx says: May 9, 2014 2:55 AM

    Great pick…

  43. cdk7572 says: May 9, 2014 3:44 AM

2nd round – take best interior D-lineman available; Nix, Jernigan, Tuitt, Hageman. Allows front 7 to stay fresh through rotation and depth. 3rd round – WR or TE; Moncrief, Allen Robinson, Ellington, also have return skills. Fiedorowicz? 4th round – QB Fales, Mettenberger, Logan Thomas…

  44. babygaga19 says: May 9, 2014 5:34 AM

Wow, another giganctic bust for the Rayduhs. Dont you folks ever get tired of seeing your high draft picks become nothing? LOL. Same ol Rayduhs.

  45. cornellwellsii says: May 9, 2014 7:09 AM

As a Raiders fan I still feel we should have drafted a QB instead of him. But I’ll wait and see how this will turn out for us.

  46. raiderbob56 says: May 9, 2014 9:55 AM

I felt at the beginning that there were 3 guys that were future impact players, Clowney, Watkins and Mack and I would love to end up with any of them. I would have settled for Evans or Lewan at #5 or trade down to get them. I am thrilled to have Mack. Good job Reggie.

  47. jjackwagon says: May 9, 2014 3:00 PM

Was watching some film on Mack, good eyes, waits for the play to develop before he attacks, quick decisions on where & when to make his move. Reminds me of Ray Lewis & Mike Singletary. There, I said it. And I don’t even like the Raiders.

  48. rupp246 says: May 9, 2014 3:58 PM

Raiders need to build their defense, we haven’t had any pass rushers in many years. Drafting Manziel would have been stupid. We needed someone who could play now.

  49. simonator917 says: May 9, 2014 5:16 PM

    Silver and Mack Attack!

  50. tkashuba says: May 9, 2014 6:27 PM

Mack is dirty. Perfect for the raiders.
