Ravens select Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley with 17th overall pick

The Baltimore Ravens have been very fond of Alabama defensive players during Ozzie Newsome’s tenure as general manager.

Baltimore once again went back to the Alabama well and selected linebacker C.J. Mosley with the 17th overall pick in the draft.

Linebacker may not have been the biggest need for the Ravens but ultimately Baltimore decided Mosley was their guy. The Ravens continue to reload during the draft on the defensive side of the football. Newsome has selected Alabama defensive tackle Terrance Cody and linebacker Courtney Upshaw in recent seasons. In addition, the Ravens traded for troubled linebacker Rolando McClain, who remains on the reserve/retired list.

The Ravens pick had long been thought as a possible target for the San Francisco 49ers to trade up with a package of some of their 11 draft picks due to the relationship of head coaches John and Jim Harbaugh. Instead, the Ravens decided Mosley was the guy they had to have and turned in their selection.

With the top four offensive tackles off the board, the Ravens could have elected to address their secondary as well. Darqueze Dennard, Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor all were available to Baltimore. Instead, they once again elect to go with a linebacker in the draft.

Excellent value pick. He’ll be a solid ILB.

Perfect assessment. Dallas just took our tackle, a safety is another huge need, but like always they stayed true to their board and Oz’s fondness for Alabama products.

    Another Alabama bust.

  4. seahawksbmx says: May 8, 2014 10:13 PM

Your omission of him in your first round Mock is kind of what made it a failure.

How much water can johnny drink before he has to “break the seal”? That dudes gonna be peeing all night!

  6. partmachine says: May 8, 2014 10:30 PM

    Fine by me.

Btw, this is only the 6th Alabama guy the Ravens have ever drafted.

Probably would have taken Martin if not for Dallas, but love a guy who you can look at as a 10 year starter in the league.

Ravens sticking to their formula. I love it.

  8. buzzbeaubank says: May 8, 2014 10:41 PM

Terry Jones, JJ, The Ron, Cody, Upshaw and now Mosley. Ralph Staten in the 7th? doesn’t count. In terms of value, I’ll take all of them except Cody.

ugh, like the ravens need another awesome Linebacker.

  11. charmcityalum says: May 8, 2014 10:53 PM

Cody was from Oklahoma not Bama

  12. jiggy3198 says: May 8, 2014 11:00 PM

  15. nickp91 says: May 8, 2014 11:10 PM

    C.J. Mosley next Ray Lewis

  16. buzzbeaubank says: May 8, 2014 11:10 PM

You’re both right. Dan and Terrence were both busts.

  17. nativeraider says: May 8, 2014 11:12 PM

This guy looks the part of a Raven. Good pick coming from a RAIDER fan.

  18. crownofthehelmet says: May 8, 2014 11:56 PM

Nice pick. In under the clock.

I love me some Ozzie Newsome but good god damn he sometimes seems like an Alabama homer to the extreme.

Upshaw has been above average, cody’s been average at best. Rolando has been… well… Rolando.

    Time will tell. I trust.

What a pickup! Dudes a beast!

  21. vincentbojackson says: May 9, 2014 1:08 AM

Ok pick, but Mosley had 5 surgeries during his college career.

A lot of mileage already on that body heading into the big boy league.

  22. SAV says: May 9, 2014 1:44 AM

CJ Mosley will fit in great personality wise with the team. Team Captain, hustles on every play, relentless. Nasty on the field. He’s a fit.

The other Alabama guys Ozzie drafted were ‘value’ picks Upshaw, Cody, and the McClain signing cost them little to nothing. This is different. Ill let Ozzie redeam himself because I CAN see him Daryl Smith Doom and Suggs being a nasty 4 linebacker combo to back up the beef patrol up front

  23. coachbeck says: May 9, 2014 7:02 AM

Cause Bama LB’s have played so well.

Maybe they just wanted to go all Bama inside. ;)

  24. clipper222 says: May 9, 2014 9:05 AM

Grabbing the top ILB rated by many scouts as a potential top 10 or top 12 pick is a GREAT pick.

Mosley is exactly the type of player the Ravens want on their team and build their defense around. He is a proven leader ON AND OFF the field.

    Welcome to Baltimore!

And that oline is still swiss cheese. I see the Steelers winning this division.

  26. crownofthehelmet says: May 9, 2014 10:05 AM

He’s no Shazier, but I’m sure he’s good enough to play on the ravens D.

  27. gameover78 says: May 9, 2014 10:22 AM

Thankfully hes no Shazier, this kid can play the run and pass! He has more accolades and is 2x Captain

  28. dcapettini says: May 9, 2014 10:25 AM

Because Cody and Upshaw have done so much, the Ravens need another overrated ‘Bama dude. Maybe Ozzie is getting old. Hey Ozzie! You still don’t have a free safety and there were 4 taken in the round and you could have taken any one of the four. When was the last ‘Bama player that came in and had an impact?

  29. guitarkevin says: May 9, 2014 10:35 AM

The is the first Bama player drafted int he first round by the Ravens. Look, we all know Ozzie likes Bama players, but his man crush for them is way over rated.

I was hoping for an offensive linemen at this pick, but when a projected top 10 guy, on many boards, falls to 18 – you have to grab him.

I just hope the rest of the draft focuses on needs like O Line, Safety, O Line, O Line, did I mention O Line. And a receiver or 2 in this deep WR draft.

  30. l0glcalv0icesays says: May 9, 2014 11:38 AM

Mosley’s going to be a huge bust. Anyone who views him without their purple sunglasses on realizes that. Should have drafted a new QB, too bad you bums didn’t trade up for RG3, who is the best QB in the NFL! #HTTR #RedskinsRunTheStateOfMaryland

  31. thebirdsareback says: May 9, 2014 12:21 PM

LOL the redskins are still around these days? havent noticed. Been too busy winning superbowls in baltimore. Sorry

  32. jtbsteeler says: May 9, 2014 12:26 PM

    Most Alabama players are overrated.
