Redskins finally draft, take linebacker Trent Murphy

Senior Bowl Getty Images

The Redskins finally decided to join the party.

After trading down with the Cowboys, the Redskins added Stanford defensive end Trent Murphy with the 47th overall pick.

He had 15.0 sacks and batted down seven passes last year, but he’s not a big-time pass-rush prospect because he lacks ideal speed.

He’s a bit of a tweener/outside linebacker, not completely unlike Ryan Kerrigan. That gives them a bit of insurance if they can’t keep Brian Orakpo for the long term after franchising him.

Out of this world STUPID pick!!!!!!!

  2. chrisswitzer2189 says: May 9, 2014 8:28 PM

Should’ve waited for the 3rd round for him and took Morgan Moses.

  3. mac7163 says: May 9, 2014 8:29 PM

The need is a offensive tackle ! I thought it was a no- brainer ! With the trade in picks Dallas was allowed to pick for the Skins as well ! All that talent that could start now they get a back up ! Idiots !

hahahahahahahahahaha way to go Redskins FO

    what a wasted pick

  5. elliottcovert says: May 9, 2014 8:36 PM

Nice pick, I was hoping he’d fall to the third.

    Really?!

  7. lezbehonestppl says: May 9, 2014 8:44 PM

Lead CFB with 15 sacks last year. Long arms, has an arsenal of pass rushing moves, and has an endless motor. Not the flashy pick, but damn if this guy isn’t going to give his all! Like the pick.

  8. chrisswitzer2189 says: May 9, 2014 8:45 PM

Kerrigan clone. High motor player but a reach. Goodbye to orakpo if he plays good. Skins will have a solid olb/de rotation.

We have to get an OT now in the third round now.

  10. geniusesq says: May 9, 2014 8:49 PM

People thought Jordan Reed was a dumb pick when we needed a corner and already had Fred Davis.

    It’s the NFL people.

I don’t watch much college football, but I NEVER heard of him

  12. baddegg says: May 9, 2014 8:54 PM

Speaking of Kerrigan, I remember when we picked Kerrigan everyone said it was a stupid pick and that we should have traded up to get Gabbert.

It just shows sometimes how we don’t know as much as we think we do…

  13. tiger2471 says: May 9, 2014 8:54 PM

That was a STUPID pick, why in the hell did we trade down in the first place? It’s obvious we need a right tackle and they choose ANOTHER LB, we picked up 3 in free agency!

  14. mac7163 says: May 9, 2014 8:55 PM

Not a dumb pick , its a not right now pick ! When your issue is protecting your qb and a good player is available you draft a back up with your 1st pick !

  15. ashure71 says: May 9, 2014 9:00 PM

We don’t need LB’s, especially outside backers. We have GLARING needs on the O-line and secondary and ignored them. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!!!!

    *sad trombone*

  17. geniusesq says: May 9, 2014 9:07 PM

Don’t draft Jordan Reed they said…..we already have Cooley and Fred Davis they said…..

    HTTR

  18. cutthajokes says: May 9, 2014 9:14 PM

Defense gave up 30 points a game last year! Good pick!

  19. geniusesq says: May 9, 2014 9:21 PM

It’s funny how little fans understand about the NFL. Not only can you never have enough pass rushers like Murphy. But, you always need high motor LBs especially when you run a 3-4.

Who do you think plays Special Teams?? Remember that unit that was the worst in NFL History???

Oh, and Orakpo has torn his pec TWICE and is on a 1 year Franchise Tender.

Why wouldn’t we draft Murphy is the better question.

    HTTR

Isn’t part of football preventing your QB from getting creamed in the pocket??!!

And you still need a corner…and a TE that can be healthy.

  22. geniusesq says: May 9, 2014 9:32 PM

The Pats just drafted a QB. Are they dumb too?

  23. mitchellb751 says: May 9, 2014 9:38 PM

Great pick!! Will be extremely solid on special teams. If you watched any Redskins game last year, you will know how important that is. More importantly with Kerrigan coming up on his 5th year option would and Orakpo seeking a long term deal would mean the Skins would have to invest around 20 million for both players. If this kid has some good production It will free up a contract for morris. This is definitely a cap friendly move

  24. cutthajokes says: May 9, 2014 9:40 PM

Polumbus gave up 4 sacks last year. Went 11 straight games without given up a sack. OT wasn’t a glaring need IMO.

  25. skinsfantom says: May 9, 2014 9:52 PM

the murph is nasty; kerrigan/murphy probowl LB tandem-AWESOME-HAIL.

And how did the redskins pass defense hold up last year buddy?
Dead last if im not mistaken. Rambo and ammerson are awful too

  27. mac7163 says: May 9, 2014 10:01 PM

3 lb’s in free agency and with the 1st pick an OLB was taken ( in case we cant keep 1 due to FA )So can we all agree the need for Free & strong safety have been met ?

  28. baddegg says: May 9, 2014 10:24 PM

OK…the redskins just took 2 Olinemen in the third…can we now stop the hystrionics?

  29. joparks2012 says: May 9, 2014 10:30 PM

Love the guys here who say we should have passed on Murphy here and took Moses. Well we got Moses in the 3rd round anyway. Those with strong opinions, just put the keyboard away and watch. There is a reason you are on this blog and not in a war room.

  30. skinsfan91 says: May 9, 2014 10:44 PM

Look who still picked up Morgan Moses and took away a third rd pick from the Cowboys in the process. Can’t wait till you amateurs are further put in your place this year when our offense is ill. HTTR.

  31. mac7163 says: May 9, 2014 10:50 PM

The pick after Moses is why I should be in the War Room! Pass over Gabe Jackson for a player who had a MCL injury ?

  32. realfootballfan says: May 9, 2014 11:38 PM

This guy’s a beast. Good pick.

  33. skinsfolife says: May 10, 2014 7:43 AM

Offensive line was the pick. Now this is just offensive. Horrible front office all over again. Who doesn’t want Shanahan back? I do I do.

  34. mac7163 says: May 10, 2014 10:07 AM

I don’t know about wanting Shanny back , but I will say he could draft . I still say better football players were passed over and so far needs haven’t been met in a draft this deep !

  35. politicallyincorrect says: May 12, 2014 3:35 PM

    great pick

but Rak says he does not have anything to prove… LOL

if Murphy is real and Rak is Rak…. may be wise to use Rak money elsewhere
