Bears take a developmental QB in David Fales

Bears General Manager Phil Emery detailed an interesting study last week, pointing out how late-round developmental quarterbacks are kind of a waste of time.

So naturally, he took one.

The Bears took San Jose State quarterback David Fales with the 183rd overall pick in the sixth round.

The Bears have Jordan Palmer behind starter Jay Cutler, so there’s a spot for someone to hang around at the bottom of the roster. Fales doesn’t have the same kind of big arm as Cutler, but he’s smart and accurate.

But the funny part is that Emery would contradict himself so quickly.

Bear fans will be clamoring for the kid to start by week 10. It’s just what they do.

Can’t be worse than Same old Jay.

He took a QB to challenge Jordan Palmer, not to be the next starter of the Bears. Besides any player taken in the 6th round is a long shot to make a roster, or stay on the roster for more than a season. Most of the time they end up being a player the team is taking a flyer on or have pegged for a special teams role.

Pretty sure he was talking about trying to find a franchise QB/long term starter in the late rounds. Fales doesn’t project to be much more than a solid, McCown type backup, which is what they need. Don’t think he contradicted himself…

I thought for sure the Packers would take the guy named Fales.

Teddy Bridgewater=poor man’s Vince Young. There, I fixed your statement for you. You’re welcome.

This team should again battle the lions for second (behind the clear cut favorite Packers), and maybe a wild card. Not bad! At least…not as bad as Minnesota!

Pretty happy with the picks. Emery looks to have done well this year, but won’t really know until they start playing.

Emery didn’t contradict himself, I love how that was your main point in this 1 Bears draft article aside from the Fuller, 1st round pick. Just adds volume to my name.

Is this kid related to Epic Fales?

how is getting a camp arm a contradiction? name 1 scout who thinks this guy is a future franchise qb or even quality starter? he is not so there is no contradiction, way to try and make something out of nothing as usual pft.

The DB Brock V is gonna be a steal for the Bears. Wish my team had drafted him.

Not to in any way minimize what was undoubtedly a extremely exhaustive study of the 52 QBs taken in round four or later since 2006 — of which only 18 have actually started a game (that took about 45 seconds to look up on pro football reference), obviously someone reminded Emery that he hired a coach who’s made a living from developing later round QBs. (Rich Gannon, 4th round, comes to mind….)

    What an unfortunate surname.

He’ll either get constant “Fales Fails” jokes or the idiots will say “It’s actually pronounced ‘Faal-ISS’. Get it, like phallus harharhar.”

If you read the entirety of his comments, you’d see he was talking about getting STARTING Qbs late in the draft. So no, he didn’t contradict anything.

David Fales a bear . Sounds good can’t believe I played with this guy in pop warner n against him in high school he was a hard worker n a tough opponent. I’m sure he will top off cutler ..Salinas California native David Fales ! Beast!

  22. dobe420 says: May 10, 2014 10:21 PM

I believe the is the very definition of a smokescreen. It’s a competion for the back up spot. They may have Jordan Lynch and like him as a running back, but I think he could be the QB of the defense at safety.

  23. edavidberg says: May 11, 2014 12:49 AM

Emery wanted Manziel and Bridgewater drafted at the top of the first so someone better would fall to the Bears.

And maybe he was trying to throw teams off the scent of his interest in Fales

    Bears and cutler Fales!!!

  25. saintmax16670 says: May 11, 2014 11:14 AM

San Jose State (Fales): 62 Fresno State (Carr): 52
