Browns players not ready to give job to Johnny Manziel

NFL Draft Football AP

Browns players are happy to have Johnny Manziel, but for the moment, they’ve got Brian Hoyer’s back.

Several players said Monday they expected Manziel to add some energy and competition, but weren’t ready to rule out Hoyer keeping the starting quarterback job.

I think good old Johnny Football is going to be a good addition to Cleveland,” center Alex Mack said , via Pat McManamon of ESPN.com. “Don’t know who the starter is going to be, though.”

Linebacker Jabaal Sheard said “Hoyer’s going to come out fighting,” while others shrugged about the level of attention coming their way.

“It’ll help sell tickets, which will make a lot of people smile in the building,” left tackle Joe Thomas said. “That’s a good thing, . . . New England is probably the most secretive of any NFL program, and they still have Tom Brady doing Ugg commercials. He has TMZ following him everywhere he goes.

“It’s just a matter of how the player handles it. I don’t know Johnny and I haven’t met him, but I’m sure he’ll have a lot of guidance in how he handles things around here with the attention he’s getting.”

Of course, if Manziel proves himself their best bet on the field, they’ll all be in his corner. And probably looking to hang out with him and Drake.

Honestly can’t see him failing. He seems to have that “it” factor. Should be fun following his career.

We will find out quickly how many players have his back if the O-Line doesn’t help him up on occasion like the Redskins players did with RG3.

Manziel worries me as a fan because he seems to be so narcissistic.

Manziel = Failure! Improv dosen’t work @ this level!

  4. clipper222 says: May 12, 2014 3:08 PM

Just like every Browns QB the past 20 years, Manziel won’t last a year before he is injured/benched/cut/forgotten.

  5. balsagna says: May 12, 2014 3:08 PM

Simple. If he performs well then nobody will care that he is being followed around or the media attention that follows him. If he sucks, then the media attention will disappear and nobody will care.

The fact that he has been dealing with this attention for multiple years in the biggest media conference in the land should help. I would hope he has learned at least something from his time in the spotlight and how to appropriately handle it.

At the end of the day he is a 21 year old kid, and no amount of people telling him to change is going to cause him to change. He has to grow up and be a man. Sadly, that’s not going to happen at 21 years old. People here will judge him, when they would do the same in his situation.

Hoyer is the best QB on the roster…It was proven last year. I hope he wins the job..

  7. ballboy48 says: May 12, 2014 3:13 PM

Ask any Browns player who they’d rather have, T. Rich or Manziel! If bet they’d say Johnny.

  8. patsbrat says: May 12, 2014 3:15 PM

I don’t know why, but that picture really bugs me…

  9. thegreatgabbert says: May 12, 2014 3:16 PM

Brian Hoyer was THAT close to getting his fifth career NFL start. Damn.

  10. thepftpoet says: May 12, 2014 3:17 PM

Teddy Bridgewater & Johny Manziel will both be respective stars at their positions.

The Minnesota Vikings will win the NFC North this year.

The Cleveland Browns will win the AFC North this year.

    It’s that simple.

Just because one is good doesn’t mean the other won’t be.

Bortles & Carr will both be busts though.

  11. rovadawg says: May 12, 2014 3:18 PM

Browns have Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Baltimore, Bye week to start the season. Hoyer will need to win two out of three of those games to keep Johnny on the bench Week 5. Without Josh Gordon, that will be a tall order.

  12. jerruhjones says: May 12, 2014 3:21 PM

It’s Hoyer’s job to lose, or at least it should be.

  13. desbattle82 says: May 12, 2014 3:30 PM

I’ll give the most honest assessment as one can ever give! It’s Brian billy hoyer not Joe Montana not Aaron Rodgers but brain billy hoyer! He’s not a scrub but he is a journeyman ! The browns didn’t disrespect him by drafting Johnny boy ! All billy hoyer earned was the chance to start the offseason program taking the first snaps but he didn’t earn anymore then that he’s absolutely not a franchise qb and they shouldn’t have treated him as such ! If he outplays manziel then he should start but they couldn’t be anymore wise by not moving forward thinking hoyer is anything more then a stopgap solution

  14. drfeelyouup says: May 12, 2014 3:31 PM

Johnny Football and Brian Hoyer. Can’t lose! Go Browns!

  15. andrewluck12 says: May 12, 2014 3:32 PM

Maybe I read their statements out of context but it seemed like they were talking about him like an outsider. I get he’s a rookie but he’s now their teammate and franchise quarterback

  16. bsizemore68 says: May 12, 2014 3:32 PM

I think he is set up for a real shock in the NFL, the veterans want to see him prove that he can get the job done. Bill

  17. kosarkid says: May 12, 2014 3:45 PM

I don’t care who starts as long as the Browns put the better player on the field. Hoyer definitely isn’t going to lay down for Johnny Football. Definitely can’t wait for the preseason games to start now. I hope they let each QB start 2 games.

  18. fordmandalay says: May 12, 2014 3:45 PM

Hoyer has the best resume of any Brown’s QB for the past 5 years – he actually played 2 whole games where he didn’t completely suck. That’ll be hard to beat out.

  19. rcali says: May 12, 2014 3:48 PM

I think the Joe Thomas comment pretty much sums it all up. Big cherries for saying that. The pick sells tickets.

  20. smartstickhotness says: May 12, 2014 3:52 PM

Conner Shaw is the best QB on their roster

  21. pascalswager42 says: May 12, 2014 4:21 PM

The similarities to Draft Day are pretty uncanny, I must say.

    Life imitating art?

    LOL

  22. humanlawndart says: May 12, 2014 4:34 PM

Call me crazy but Manzeil may be the second coming of Ryan Leaf.

  23. rosstuckershair says: May 12, 2014 4:35 PM

I understand he just called RGMe to see who did, and how much his personal logo was..Johnny wants one too

  24. pittsburgh361 says: May 12, 2014 4:45 PM

The only threat you have on offense is your TE and thats it. When gordon goes bye for the year then what. You have little, Hawkins and really thats it Burleson broke the same are again and he will be back to camp but that arm will be weak one good hit and hes done. They are setting Johnny up for failure right off to bat. Your going to have hoyer start against pittsburgh he will be running for his life. So ill say Johnny will be in by 3rd quarter. Untill he proves he can do it without mike evens the case it out on him. Do I want cleveland to be what they were in the early 90s yes do I see it happening nope. You drafted Gilbert was a good pick but to lose more than likely Haden. But cant wait to football to start.

  25. realfootballfan says: May 12, 2014 4:55 PM

It always goes like this until the young guy comes in and starts winning games. It was still players on that ’04 team wanting Tommy Maddox back when the Steelers were 10-1 or something with Roethlisberger his rookie year. That’s the business when you come in as a rookie, especially one that is expected to be the guy eventually.

  26. iamdinguskhan says: May 12, 2014 5:17 PM

His little dollar hand sign is extremely immature big time red flag. Already shows he’s a me player exactly what the Browns don’t need. The free agent rookie Shaw will eventually be Browns starter he’s a real team player if not Hoyer.

  27. qdog112 says: May 12, 2014 5:52 PM

The biggest problem is for the Browns to find a helmet to fit. This guy is the most egotistical player to EVER hit the NFL.

He is what haters wanted Cam Newton to be, so they could hate him even more. SURPRISE … Here-e-e-e-eze’s JOHNNY!!!

The defenders are gonna love hitting this guy. He is everything sportsmen have told us for decades we are supposed to hate, yet he is loved. When they see him jumping in the air every time to try and go deep, they will realize that Hoyer is the guy.

The Browns sold any chance of team success for a few jersey sales. It gets cold in Cleveland. They’ll need’em for the bonfire.

  28. goodtogo28 says: May 12, 2014 7:33 PM

    Drake is a tool.

  29. drunkwino says: May 12, 2014 7:43 PM

It’s nice that the players won’t just hand JFF the job…too bad it’s not their job to set the depth chart.

  30. Ferdinand says: May 12, 2014 8:31 PM

The way Manziel has been acting since the draft reminds me so much of Cade McNown. If he keeps it up, he might find himself with the same career.

  31. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: May 13, 2014 2:56 PM

It’s the Browns. They aren’t going to win with or without Manziel but Johnny Football can put on a heck of a show and put people in the seats.
