Oddsmaker: Broncos, Patriots, Packers heaviest divisional favorites

Denver Broncos fans AP

The Denver Broncos have won their division in each of the last three years, and if it seems like they are heavy favorites to win the AFC West for a fourth-straight year, one well-known Las Vegas sports book agrees with that sentiment.

The LVH Las Vegas Hotel and Casino’s SuperBook has installed Denver as a 2-to-7 favorite to win the AFC West in 2014. No other club is a shorter-priced favorite to win its division. To put it in money terms, a successful $10 bet on the Broncos would return a profit of a little less than $3.

In addition to the Broncos, four other clubs are less than even-money, or 1-to-1 odds, to capture their divisions at the LVH. In the AFC, the Patriots are 4-to-13 favorites in the East, while Colts are 4-to-5 to win the South. In the NFC, the Packers are 5-to-8 to win the North for the fourth straight year, and the Seahawks are 10-to-11 favorites in the West.

On the other end of the spectrum, six clubs are 10-to-1 or greater to win their divisions. The Bills are 10-to-1 in the AFC East, while the Cardinals and Rams are 10- and 12-to-1, respectively, in the NFC West.

The Vikings, 18-to-1 in the NFC North, are the longest shots to win any of the conference’s four divisions.

However, the AFC is home to the two biggest divisional long shots, with the Raiders (AFC West) and Jaguars (AFC South) both 30-to-1.

Here’s the complete list of divisional odds from the LVH:

AFC East
Patriots: 4-to-13.
Dolphins: 9-to-2.
Jets: 8-to-1.
Bills: 10-to-1.

AFC North
Bengals: 8-to-5.
Ravens: 9-to-4.
Steelers: 9-to-4.
Browns: 6-to-1.

AFC South
Colts 4-to-5.
Texans: 13-to-5.
Titans: 13-to-5.
Jaguars: 30-to-1.

AFC West
Broncos: 2-to-7.
Chargers: 5-to-1.
Chiefs: 5-to-1.
Raiders: 30-to-1.

NFC East
Eagles: 8-to-5.
Cowboys: 9-to-4.
Giants: 9-to-4.
Redskins: 9-to-2.

NFC North
Packers: 5-to-8.
Lions: 3-to-1.
Bears: 7-to-2.
Vikings: 18-to-1.

NFC South
Saints: 5-to-4.
Panthers: 5-to-2.
Falcons: 3-to-1.
Buccaneers: 5-to-1.

NFC West
Seahawks: 10-to-11.
49ers: 6-to-5.
Cardinals: 10-to-1.
Rams: 12-to-1.

Every single draft expert in the entire business has declared that the Minnesota Vikings had the best draft in the entire NFL.

We found our franchise QB – which was a complete steal at 32 considering he was easily the best college QB out of all of them and has all the intangibles, accuracy and poise you want in your franchise QB.

We got the second best OLB in the entire draft with the highest ceiling – ran a faster 3 come than any DB and a 4.43 pro day 40 time and had 24 sacks in his first 2 years playing the position. He will be learning from the best defensive evaluator there is in Mike Zimmer.

We got a former Round 1 OL prospect in David Yankey who will come in and replace Charlie Johnson and has been compared to Evan Mathis – one of the best guards in the NFL.

We also got a steal in Antone Exum, who has the range and coverage skills that would have been him a top tier talent before his ACL injury.

This is easily the best draft any team has had in the past 5 years.

The Minnesota Vikings realistically should be 1-1 Super Bowl odds.

Teddy Bridgewater is taking us to the promised land.

We will have a top 5 Defense & Offense this year.

We will go 6-0 vs our lackluster division.

Multiple Lombardis will be hoisted in the next decade.

The Minnesota Vikings are back on top.

    History will be made.

Is it too early to nominate the Viking draft choices to the Hall of Fame?

Las Vegas is being generous instilling the Vikings at 18-1 odds. The real odds are close to winning the Lotto. Interesting though, only the Raiders and the Jags have worse odds and I would take either of those two teams to win their respective divisions before I would waste a dime on the Vikings.

  18. phorton44 says: May 12, 2014 3:57 PM

I’m not terribly surprised that Green Bay has been touted favorites to win the NFC North–they’ve won it enough times in-a-row now to warrant that. And I’m not surprised that the Vikings are picked to finish last in the division–they are re-building.

I am surprised, however, that the Lions are given stronger odds than the Bears. I know the Bears are re-building their Defense at all three levels, but look how well Emery and Trestman were able to quickly build a real NFL Offense in a franchise that has not even come close in decades (literally). They have re-built the Defensive line through a combination of Free Agency and the Draft–very similar to how they re-built the Offensive Line. For a team that Defensively tripped themselves out of the playoffs last year, any Defensive improvement has them looking like a pretty good squad this year.

Meanwhile, Detroit had a poor year last year. They now have a new coaching staff that are trying to re-build several aspects of their team. Mayhew, who has been there for 5-years now, has arguably had less impact than Emery in Chicago. Their first-round pick looks like a monster TE, but this was not their area of greatest need–given the presence of Pettigrew and Fauria. They have a great Offensive mind in Caldwell, but their Defensive Coordinator seems to be a bit of a reach.

I know those Vegas guys are sharp, but Detroit finishing second in that Division would be a surprise to me.

  19. citizenstrange says: May 12, 2014 4:01 PM

Anything you can’t bet the other side of is a sucker bet. For example you should be able to put down six grand against the Browns to win one grand.

  20. darkneptune73 says: May 12, 2014 4:02 PM

These odds are terrible. We don’t know how good Bridgewater will be. We don’t know if Rodgers will have a down year. What about Manning getting injured?

Odds mean nothing this early in the season. They should just wait until October at the earliest to release the odds.

After using half of their draft picks in rounds 6 and 7, the theory that the last place Vikings have somehow become a juggernaut is almost as mystifying as the fact that Tara Reid continues to find people willing to pay her to “act.”
Anyone willing to bet on Mini deserves a much better return than 18 to 1.

At least they got the part about finishing in last place right.

  30. fartweasel says: May 12, 2014 4:20 PM

The odds makers must not watch much football. Packers have no better odds of winning the division than any other team in it as they did little in the draft or free agency to strengthen their horrible defense, while Detroit, Chicago and Minnesota all look better on the offensive side of the ball. That division is open for the taking.

  31. weepingjebus says: May 12, 2014 4:22 PM

Broncos quit in that SB blowout loss, there is no going back from that absent complete roster turnover. It’ll always be in their heads, always. Just getting to 10-6 will be a struggle.

For those comments that their teams odds are wrong and should have better odds, I have a suggestion for you.
Put your money where your mouth ( comment) is. If the oddsmakers are so wrong, it is a great opportunity to make money since you know more than them.

For the genius comment that they should wait until October to post odds, do you understand what the term odds is and the purpose of establishing them ?

  33. scchamil says: May 12, 2014 4:28 PM

All joking aside (and I’m not a Viks fan) – but 18 to 1 to win that division is the best bet out there. I’m not saying they will do that, but anyone who still thinks Aaron Rodgers and the Packers have an impending dynasty on their hands needs to pull their heads out of the sand. I used to think Rodgers was destined to be the best QB in football for a solid stretch… but 46 “discount double check” commercials later he hasn’t made the leap and he still comes off as a bit of a whiner who isn’t fully embraced by his teammates and doesn’t fully realize how good he has it. Not sure HaHa Clinton-Dix solves all their defensive issues either. The Lions and Bears have good talent but are the same giant question marks they are every season. Jury is still out on Stafford and Cutler. Bottom line: if this season plays out 18 times, the team with Peterson, Patterson, Bridgewater and a Zimmer coached D wins that division more than 1 time. I mean Bridgewater has a better than 1 and 18 chance of being a star in this league…and if he is than Vikings immediately competitive.

Couldn’t help but notice that 7 of the 8 teams projected to win their division won it last year. I also couldn’t help but notice that there’s usually a 50% turnover in playoff teams from year to year. Things change fast in the NFL.

  37. possumsauce says: May 12, 2014 4:38 PM

I just checked Sky’s World Cup odds, which have Italy at 20:1 to win the whole thing. If Italy is 20:1 to win the World Cup, the Vikings should be no better than 10,000:1 to win the NFC North. Basically, the only way Minnesota wins their division is if the Green Bay and Detroit charters collide in mid-air directly above Soldier Field, during a Bears game.

Real football fans realize every year there is one team that over achieves and one that under achieves.

Injuries, dumb luck and 100 other things can and usually do affect the season. Nobody thought Atlanta would tank last season or that KC would be the last team to lose a game.

Every year is different and injuries can and do change everything.

Aren’t 6-5 odds better than 10-11 odds? Meaning the 9ers are division favorites…

The NFL is becoming boring to me.Every year it’s the same act:give the Pats an easy schedule adding a couple of tough games toward the end of the season…in Gillette Stadium of course. Then brag about how dominating the Pats are year after year just to watch them not win a SB since spygate
It’s time for a new act NFL

if the Lions couldn’t take the division last year with the Bears starting 10 special teamers on defense most of the year and Rodgers sitting on the sideline they never will

Some of these clowns are hilarious… Vikings finished 5-10-1 last year loing 4 games with leads in the last minute of the game… We have one of the best Defensive minds as our new coach… The best Offensive Coordinator this league has seen in 20 years as our Offensive coordinators and the best running back in football… Im not about to go buy Vikings Superbowl T shirts or nothing but lets be real for just a minute…

The Giants will be reminded that the Eagles are the favorites in the NFC East.

I just put 5k on the Raiders and 5k on the Jags to win their conferences. If someone gives you 30:1, you take it.

My way too early division winners….
    Eagles
    Packers
    BUCS
    Seahawks
    Patriots
    Steelers
    Colts
    Broncos

  84. youknowwhatsgoodforshoulderpain says: May 13, 2014 6:25 PM

Wow…30-1…that’s a sad statement about that team

  85. tealrevival says: May 13, 2014 8:43 PM

The jags swept the Texans last year and split with the titans, both close games. They won 4 out of 5 in the 2nd half of the season. 4 wins in 5 games without MJD and Blackmon, and several other starters….. that started 0-8 against the niners, hawks, chiefs, broncos, colts……. The Colts will win the division if Luck stays healthy, but if you think the jags won’t be competitive next year you are probably a clown making London or LA jokes, didn’t pay attention to what they did in FA or the draft, or all of the above. Gus is the real deal.

    Man, the Raiders just suck.

I wonder if Ray Halbritter’s Oneida casino will boycott any bets involving the Redskins? I doubt it. Hypocrite. HTTR

  91. politicallyincorrect says: May 19, 2014 11:54 AM

I know Pats play in AFC East but they kinda suck….

There must be an awful lot of dumb money Pats fans… may have surpassed the uneducated Cowboy fans at this point
