Bob McNair not worried with Texans’ quarterback situation

The Texans waited until the fourth round to select quarterback Tom Savage, adding a quarterback with promise to the roster but not one that is a clear choice to be the team’s starter in the 2014 season.

That leaves the most important position on the offense up for grabs in a competition between Savage, Ryan Fitzpatrick, T.J. Yates and Case Keenum, which doesn’t quite fit with owner Bob McNair’s earlier vows not to go through a lengthy rebuilding process after going 2-14 last season. The lack of certainty at quarterback isn’t doing anything to shake that belief, however.

“Well there are 11 positions on offense and defense; very few teams have all of them filled to their satisfaction,” McNair said, via ESPN.com. “I don’t know if we’ve ever been in that position. I think we’re a pretty solid team and we’ve got our core players who are still around who are outstanding. That’s why I said I just thought we need to fill in some holes, which we have done, but you aren’t going out and completely tearing the team up and rebuilding it from scratch. That’s not the case at all.”

The Texans made several moves to shore up their running game and defense during the draft, two areas where improvement would take pressure off whoever winds up starting at quarterback in Houston this season. If they improve enough, McNair’s desire to avoid an extended rebuilding process has a much better chance of succeeding even as the team hunts for the right answer at quarterback.

  1. I hope Mr. McNair doesn’t start to believe he is another Jerry Jones. Shoemaker stick to thy last!

  2. There may be 22 positions, but quarterback is pretty darned important among those 22.

  3. McNair doesn’t have to be worried about the QB situation. He knows Texans fans are going to fill his stadium, buy his hotdogs, buy his beer, buy the merc etc and not complain one single bit.

  4. I happen to believe that Fitzpatrick can hold down that job for a little while. Arian Foster must be healthy to give this team a shot though. Fitz won’t wow you and this team won’t go far without a run game. Fitz to Andre for 6. I can see it now…. who’s gonna stop them?… Jacksonville? The Titans? lol

  5. Houston is by FAR the third best football team in Texas! They wish they were GOD’s team, the Dallas Cowboys! Our amazing o-line will end the careers of the overrated Watt and Clowney! What a dysfunctional franchise you are! You wish you will have a dynasty like us, which we will start again this year (3 Super Bowls in 7 years, minimum!)

  6. They got the #1 DE, G, NT and blocking TE on the entire board and they were positions of need.
They got the QB that O’Brien wanted.
Now the Browns are calling Manziel their “backup”.
I think the Texans will be back pretty soon.

  7. Houston I think we found the problem.. His name is Russel Wilson not Westbrook. Maybe if you knew the players names you could draft better. And Mallet is not the answer.. Stop taking back up QB’s and think they are going to be starters

  8. I’ve got this nagging feeling that Jake Locker is going to have a good year this year and then, as a free agent, choose to sign with the Texans, Jags, or Jeff Fisher’s Rams. If he goes on to lead any of those three teams, I’ve no doubt it will come back to bite Titans fans in most ironic fashion.

  9. This team is just weird. Great players, awesome one year, completely collapse the next, no QB, yet a smoking D-line. Seems like a schizophrenics dream team.

  10. this is why it is so frustrating to be a texans fan. the entire organization is oblivious, top to bottom. does the old man really think it is fine not to have a starting qb? does he think it is okay to let rick smith continue to make free agency decisions and draft players when he gets embarrassed every year. i guess he thinks it’s fine because, as someone else noted, he will still sell out every game (if this year is 2-14 again though, i think he may be pushing to sell out games).

  11. I just don’t think you win Superbowls with a quarterback drafted in the 5th round. Its a reason why he was still there in the 5th round.

  12. I hope that Keenum and other QBs are s given a chance to compete for the starting job rather than just handing it to Savage.

  13. Please, please, please, Mr. McNair. Just shut up. Your job is to sign checks. Period. Thats it.
