Chris Houston had toe surgery

Chicago Bears v Detroit Lions

Chicago Bears v Detroit Lions

Gregory Shamus

Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew said last week that cornerback Chris Houston might need surgery because the toe injury that hampered him last season was still proving to be a problem.

Mayhew didn’t offer an update this week, but Houston did. Houston posted a picture of himself in a hospital gown on Instagram on Monday night and his father confirmed with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that Houston had surgery to correct the issue with his toe.

“He’s doing great,” Larry Houston said. “His doctor said he’s fine, and everything went great. So just rehab [now].”

The elder Houston didn’t offer any timetable for his son’s recovery, although the Lions had admitted to concern about Houston’s ability to bounce back from a poor 2013 season even before the cornerback had the surgery. The Lions took cornerback Nevin Lawson out of Utah State in the fourth round, adding an option to the mix as the Lions try to build a better secondary with or without Houston back on his game.
