Panthers claim Drake Nevis off waivers from Jags

Other than a third-round pick on guard Trai Turner, the Panthers didn’t do much to bolster their offensive line lately.

But they’re still working on stacking up defensive line help.

Per the league’s transaction wire, the Panthers claimed defensive tackle Drake Nevis off waivers from Jacksonville.

Nevis has been around the block, turning up with the Jags, Cowboys and Chargers last season. He was originally a third-round pick of the Colts.

It’s going to be hard to make the Panthers roster, but he’s solid depth in case of injury, which is how he’s been getting jobs the last year. He’ll compete with veteran Colin Cole for a backup job, behind the three-man rotation of second-year defensive tackles Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short and veteran Dwan Edwards.

Nevis is a high-energy guy. Colts fans loved him. If not for a devastating injury, he’d probably still be in Indy.

I knew this guy personally for a couple of years, and he is a really really good guy. He was a stud at DT while at LSU; if healthy, he can absolutely make that team.

Part of the wire deal was getting shirts that fit Turner.

It does seem a bit odd to be going after Jaguar sloppy seconds on the d-line when the o-line needs more depth. I still think we have a good team, but we do need more guys on the o-line.

I think the Jags coaching staff don’t know what they had. I trust the Panther Defensive coaches a hell a lot more than Jacksonville’s.

Dwan Edwards and Colin Cole were backups on their previous team too.
