Add the Lions to the list of teams quickly getting deals done with draft picks.

The club has signed Princeton defensive tackle Caraun Reid, agent Mike McCartney announced on Twitter on Thursday.

Financial terms of the deal are not known, but Reid, the Lions’ fifth-round pick, received a four-year contract.

Reid (6-2, 301) notched 168 tackles (41 for loss) and 20.5 sacks for Princeton (2009, 2011-2013). Should he make the Lions’ roster, it could be as a backup behind starting tackles Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh. Fairley’s contract expires after the 2014 season, while Suh has two years left on his deal, which means there could be an opportunity for another defensive tackle to eventually assume a bigger role in the Detroit defense.

  1. This is the last year for Fairley AND Suh’s contracts, which is why I was expecting a DT to be drafted before round 5. But I like everything I’ve read about and seen of Reid since he was drafted. I just hope he’s ready to fill some very large shoes in 2015!

  2. Rumor had it the Bears were extremely interested in this guy. Since they ultimately picked not just one but two other DTs instead, it will be interesting to see who turns out to be the best player.
