Chiefs sign third-rounder Phillip Gaines

2014 NFL Combine

The Chiefs have a smaller draft class than some teams, so they’re halfway to home after signing their third player in the last two days.

Cornerback Phillip Gaines is the latest rookie to agree to a four-year contract. The third-rounder is the highest pick to sign to this point, joining sixth-round guard Zach Fulton and seventh-round tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.

Gaines posted the second-fastest official 40 time among cornerbacks at the combine, running just a tick behind Browns first-rounder Justin Gilbert. That speed and his 6-0 frame look good on paper, although reviews were mixed on Gaines’ performance at Rice during the pre-draft process.

There’s been trade chatter about Brandon Flowers and any move in that direction would likely result in more playing time for Gaines. There should be a fair amount of it available even with Flowers on the roster, with Chris Owens and Sanders Commings looking like the chief competition.
