While the “will Jerry or won’t Jerry” draft hysteria surrounding Johnny Manziel gripped Dallas last week, the one person who apparently wasn’t fazed was the guy Manziel would have been backing up.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told SiriusXM NFL Radio that management talked to Romo well in advance of the draft about the Manziel speculation, and that Romo remained confident.
“We did it, everybody had a visit with him along the way,” Jones said, via Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com. “Jerry [Jones] included, myself included, and told him how this is his football team and how much we think of him and with all the rumors flying around not to pay attention to that.
“His response is, as you might expect from Tony, it was ‘Well if you decide to, it ain’t going to matter, there’s not anybody out there that can beat me out.’”
Jones also said they think Romo can play at least four seasons, which made drafting another quarterback early a moot point.
Now, all Romo has to do is recover from his second back surgery, and prove that he’s ready to take on all comers.
