When Washington selected former Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk with a sixth-round pick, no one was happier than Robert Griffin III.
Griffin was getting in head coach Jay Gruden’s ear on Saturday, telling him what a great player Seastrunk is.
“He was texting during the draft -- I was trying to ignore my phone,” Gruden told CSNWashington.com. “He’s a big fan of Lache and they’re obviously good friends, and he has a lot of good things to say about him. So I know Robert’s happy and we’re happy to have Lache.”
Seastrunk and Griffin were on the same team at Baylor in 2011, when Griffin won the Heisman Trophy. But they never actually played in a game together because Seastrunk was sitting out after transferring from Oregon. So if they get on the field together in Washington, that will be a first.
Griffin’s comments to Gruden have been interpreted in some quarters as meaning that Griffin influenced Washington’s draft plans, but that’s not what Gruden said: Gruden said Griffin was texting him about Seastrunk during the draft, but it wasn’t clear whether Gruden meant Griffin texted him before the pick to say he wanted Washington to draft Seastrunk, or if Gruden meant Griffin texted him after the Seastrunk pick to say how excited he was to play with Seastrunk again.
Either way, Gruden likes what Seastrunk can bring to the offense.
“Of course, Lache has what you can’t coach, and that’s blazing speed,” Gruden said.
That’s true of both Seastrunk and Griffin.
