Brandon Marshall announces new contract with Bears

AP

Brandon Marshall has signed a new contract with the Bears, and announced it in a venue where NFL news had not previously been broken.

Marshall appeared on The View today to say that he has agreed to a new three-year, $30 million contract extension. He also announced that he will donate $1 million to treatment for people with mental health issues. Marshall himself has been open about his own struggle with mental illness, and the way treatment helped him turn his life around.

The 30-year-old Marshall had one year left on his previous deal. The new extension ties him to the Bears through the 2017 season.

On the field, Marshall has been outstanding in Chicago, starting all 32 games since the Bears traded for him two years ago and catching a total of 218 passes for 2,803 yards and 23 touchdowns. Marshall has a great rapport with quarterback Jay Cutler, who also signed a long-term deal to remain in Chicago, and the two of them will be together for years to come.

Marshall is one of just three players in NFL history (along with Andre Johnson and Wes Welker) to have five different 100-catch seasons.

  1. NOT a fan of the Chicago Bears… but… I am happy things have improved for Brandon Marshall.

  2. As a packer fan I wanna say “the bears still suck” but Brandon Marshell is pretty awesome. And one of the only celebrities who use their position to help the cause if mental health.

    Good for you Marshell.

  3. Emery has obviously had a plan in place for the offseason and he’s executing it much to the chagrin of the rest of the nfc north. One of the top wideouts in the game is now a Bear for the foreseeable future.

  4. Miami Dolphins front office were idiots they had Marshall and Vontae Davis and they traded both away for peanuts now look at where they are and look at where the Dolphins are. It’s karma getting em especially for the way the coaches treated Vontae on Hard Knocks.

Best receiver core in the NFL just got locked up for another 3 years!

    Marshall, Jeffery, Wilson, Bennett, Forte.

    Emery!!!
    ————————-

Cutler has a strong arm, but unless he can throw it to Cleveland from Chicago… Bennett won’t be catching any of his passes anytime soon.

    Typical Chicago sports fan much?

  6. Big error on the part of the Bears throwing all that money at Cutler and Marshall. Who’s gonna play defense?

    Martellus Bennett…the TE.

    General football knowledge much?

  8. He didn’t produce in Miami and was having off the field issues. He was also fighting teammates in the locker room. I hated seeing him go but if you look at it from the dolphins point of view it was a no brainer.

  9. Wasn’t it Jerry Angelo who acquired Marshall, Jeffery, forte, and Cutler. Why give all the love to Emery?

    Martellus Bennett durka durka.

I’m guessing Jared Allen, Lance Briggs, Lamarr Houston, Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings and some combination of the four picks Phil Emery used within the first four rounds on defensive players.

But then again, I’m not the expert you seem to be.

JW… he was referring to the Black Mamba, Martellus Bennett.

Congrats on being an ignorant troll.

“James Jones for the Packers is twice as good as Marshall.”

    At what, exactly?

  14. While Brandon Marshall donates a million dollars… the NFL has agreed to donate $10,000. Just kidding, the NFL donates nothing… so you are just wasting your money. Why not have the NFL match the million dollars?!?!

  15. Congrats to Brandon. He’s been a model citizen and great player since he’s come over, and puts his money where his mouth is in regards to mental illnesses. Glad to see one of the really good guys on the team get rewarded. He quickly became my second favorite Bear behind Tillman with what he’s done on and off the field. Glad to see that he’ll be sticking around.

  16. This is a guy, who if he holds it together the rest of his career, should have a movie made about him.

I’m not a Bears fan but have a lot of respect for this guy on and off the field.

  17. One of the guys in today’s NFL that are true HOF locks. Any way this guy doesn’t make the Hall. Dominant. Beast.

  18. “Wasn’t it Jerry Angelo who acquired Marshall, Jeffery, forte, and Cutler. Why give all the love to Emery?”

Only 50% correct – Angelo drafted Forte and traded for Cutler. Emery traded for Marshall and drafted Jeffery.

Emery is amazing. Remade offense last year, improved D this year, has locked up Cutler and Marshall. Considered the shamble Angelo and Lovie left, not bad in two years.

  19. Other GMs are green with envy over Emery at this point because $10M a year is well below market value for a WR of Marshall’s caliber. He obviously is very, very happy in Chicago and that’s great to see. I’m a Bears fan but I’d say that even if I weren’t.

I’m also going to go ahead and assume that a very large portion of that money is guaranteed.

  20. Seahawks fan here saying Congrats to Brandon and kudos for the huge donation to mental health! Unfortunately, this is a disease that carries a massive stigma with it and it is great to have people like Brandon being so willing to speak openly about it. Good guy doing good things! As fans, we get very caught up in all of the negative things that NFL players do; hopefully we can also praise guys when they do good deeds.

Also hard to argue that the Bears have the best receivers in the NFL.

  21. I hope his contract threw in a couple hundred thousand to pay for the stupid fines the League imposes for his choice of shoe colors that support his causes.

You are right! I forgot that Emery kept Lovie for a year when he was hired. Anyway, nice extension Bears fans. I love the landscape of this team. That defense just needs to get back in order and you’ve got an elite team.

  23. Great move to lock him up for a few more years, what Chicago has with Forte, Bush, Jeffery, Marshall and Bennett is pretty scary. It’s funny though because with Lovie it was a great D, with not enough offense, now a great offense with no defense. Still though, it comes down to Cutler, he’s talented enough to win big but makes too many mistakes.

  24. In 7 NFL seasons, James Jones has never caught 100 passes or gone over 1,ooo yards receiving.

His career #s: 310 receptions for 4,305 yards and 37 TDs.

Brandon has 218 catches, 2,803 yards, and 23 TDs in just the last two seasons. His career #s are: 712 catches, 9,050 yards, and 57 TDs. Plus he has gone over 1,000 yards in 7 straight seasons since his rookie year, and hauled in 100 or more passes 5 times in 8 seasons.

    Just sayin’…

  25. He’s been a model citizen, and a dominant WR since he’s been here. Kinda surprised at the contract. That’s well below market value. Nice job Phil, and congratulations Brandon.

  26. Best WR corp in the league?!? LMAO what a joke. They’re not even the best in their division.

  27. Cutler and Marshall “together for years to come.” I like the sound of that! Great job by Emery and staff. Bear Down Chicago Bears!

  28. And Alshon Jeffery will be getting his extension by this time next year, if not sooner.

  29. Uhhhm… James Jones isn’t in GB any longer, yourfavorite.
Bears will be very tough this year.
Props to Marshall for giving some of his money to a worthy cause.
Fun to have a great rival like the Bears.

  30. Marshall and Jeffery are better than Johnson and Tate, and the Bears are a better team than the Lions.

    Deal with it.

  31. Marshall, Jeffrey, and Bennett are beasts. As a Viking fan, now I know how a Bears fan felt from 1998-2000 when the Vikings had Moss, Carter, and Reed. Good on him, he deserves it and is nothing but class.

  32. Like anyone cares. Bmarsh is no Megatron even though he thinks he is. Thank god I am a lions fan and not have to cheer for this sad sad franchise. Go Lions!!!

  33. Really happy ’bout the extension you guys! Glad to see Brandon’s turned his life around and is using his money and status to help others! Excited to see number 15 catch passes from the Windy City Gunslinger for years to come!

  34. Thank you Calvinthegreat81, for one of the funniest comments I’ve read ever. Lol

Yea i had to snicker myself but the first part rings true and you know it.

    Megatron HOF
Brandon Marshall Pretty good HOF, maybe.

  36. Where do these lions fans come up with this stuff? Lol lets see you have never won a super bowl you had an 0-16 season the best player you’ve ever had hasn’t suited up in almost 2 decades and don’t say its Johnson when he has not reached Sanders career impact and your qb’s claim to fame is a shootout win with the likes of Brady Quinn. The Sad franchise is the Bears? Lol

  37. Plus his training facility that almost the whole bears offense attends too in the offseason. Worked for Jeffery can’t wait to see what happens for Wilson. Marshall saying almost the same things he did when he said Jeffery was going to break out last year. Lions fans this is team leadership… not working out on your own when you should be with the rest of the team with the “new” coaching staff. And no I don’t want him on my team. We are stacked enough now.
